January 21, 20197 yr Popular Post Artie, if you want some scrolling tips - do a search of @Smallpatch's posts. He has done a few in great detail that are worth the read for how-to...

Me Likey. You can make you own custom ones for smaller jobs. I have pins in my right arm and wrist so the angle that is comfortable for me might not be for others.
January 21, 20197 yr Author Popular Post The Missus has some stencil templates, 1 inch, that seem like they would work. Gonna try just stenciling the letters on the Cross in pencil, and cutting out the lines, gonna go vertical instead of horizontal.

Then take scrollsaw and practice making your cuts. See how the saw responds and get a feel for the technic needed. Then take some scraps the same size as the crosses and repeat. So by the end of say 4-6 attempts you have the kinks worked out and when you go to actually do the real deal you have some experience with what to expect.
January 23, 20197 yr Popular Post Artie, do you have a printer hooked in to you computer??? If you have a printer then get the program like Rapid Resizer to load on to your computer... This will let you see something you want to load and use like cats or dogs or picture of a house or what ever... Right click on a object and send to Pictures, Downloads or Documents. Then if you have loaded Rapid Resizer which does cost something now click on Rapid Resizer and then bring up the item or picture you want Rapid Resizer to reduce, inlarge or send to the printer and tell it to print.... Artie. I never use blue painters tape. I like to use Scotch brand clear packing tape because it does not leave as much stickum on the wood as Duck brand does. The clear packing tape goes directly on to the wood. Then spray the stickum on to the clear tape...then apply the pattern on to the stickum.. After you scroll saw the letters out pull the clear packing tape off and you are ready for what ever you want to do next, paint, spray or leave alone. Like this this thing I made using the animals. It was in a scroll saw catalog. I cut out this picture and laid it in the printer and printed it out and put it in Downloads. I then opened Rapid Resizer and opened the download files and I had Rapid Resizer to enlarge it to 12" or so from about 2" when it was in the catalog.. I printed out two or three copies, used one and made this and filed the other two away in case someone wanted one later... I found this old religious scene and down loaded it and had Rapid Resizer to make it about 18" tall and glued it on to some prepared wood and cut it out with the scroll saw then carved it with the Dremel.. I,m in the process of trying to learn carving with a Dremel so don't look too close. What I'm trying to suggest is a person needs a printer,, don't have to be expensive either. This Canon MG 2522 is about 3 months old and cost 20.00 bucks from Walmart.. We have had Rapid Resizer for about 20 years and had loaded it on about 4 computers in that time.. It was free back then but I know it does cost now, how much , not a clue.. If you are using Microsoft 7, 8 or 10 you have free letters of all kinds of fonts right there but you do need a printer to print them out. All the names I have used in making signs and things came off my computer. You can find them on some form of Word, or Word Pad like on microsoft 10. You can make the letters any size to fit your space. And it will be better if you make each name or word connected to each other.. See the lines I drew under the names. This will connect each letter so I don't have to try and keep the space between the letters exact. Spacing one at a time while trying to glue them on a board and make straight is almost impossible.. I think I have some made to show how I cut them out and ready to glue on .. Under each letter I have two connecting points . When I first started I only had one connecting point and sometimes one would fall off or break before I could get them glued down. I started out using 2 part epoxy to secure them on the boards but could never use to exact amount of epoxy so now I use Aleene's glue. It dries clear and does stay kinda flexible. Artie the deer and things is hanging in the basement of my motor home when I took the picture...the plywood and what ever stayed in the motor home and the picture is now hanging in my house. I'm not a teacher so I probably have you confused more now than before you read this. But any questions, just ask.
January 23, 20197 yr Well since Cal range my bell I thought I would add some confusion to you thoughts... I couldn't make anything if I didnt have a printer and Rapid Resizer>
January 24, 20197 yr Author Popular Post SMALLPATCH! First of all, that piece of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph should be hanging on a museum wall, somewhere. Breathtaking! I have computer, it has windows 10. I WILL get Rapid Resizer, and mess around with it, till I can get it to do what I want it to. I believe it was you who suggested to me to use red ink, easier to see. (See I was paying attention). Unfortunately it looks like it may be awhile before I can get another good chunk of shop time. I appreciate the advice, and thank you.
January 27, 20197 yr Author Popular Post It would be nice if I could lessen the amount of “YOU IDIOT!!” Moments I have. Guess I’m just learning the hard way (as my DAD used to say). Pictures are gonna follow. Crosses are glued up, sanded, so that the joints are pretty much undetectable by fingers. I tried to drill circles in each end, tried to use the same backing board, lining it up with the bit (Forster), got some tear-out. Apparently need to use a separate board, or at least a new section of it, each hole. Let’s see, when I routed the cove edges, I started feeding into the bit right at the hole, so of course that chipped out (I am a maronie, as the stooges would say). I also didn’t realize that when I was routing the cove edge in, I needed to put the GOOD side down, DOH! On the successful side, I had fun, used a random orbital sander for the first time, and the Crosses I didn’t screw up, seemed to be well liked by those I’ve shown them too. This is why I made the first 3 out of Poplar. Why learn on Cherry? So if I can figure Rapid Resizer out, and get Jesus, and Faith cut out on the vertical of two of the Crosses tomorrow, I can start to get a feel for what the people I’m making these for, want.

January 27, 20197 yr Popular Post @Artie ... that much tearout w/ a forstner bit usually indicates the bit is dull.. could be too fast of a feed rate also... then again the speed isn't matched to the bit.. worst case, the rim is set behind/lower than the flute(s)... (the flute cuts before the rim does).. diablotools-forstner-speed-reference-chart.pdf speedchart.pdf FORSTNER SPEED&SHARPENING.pdf how to sharpen forstner bits... the video... January 28, 20197 yr Author Popular Post The 3 samples are done. I went over to the lady who lives across the parking lot from us (She is the person who was the impetus for me wanting to make some Crosses) to get her to tell me what her preference would be. She had her sister over (was planning on making her one) her brother (who I’m supposed to go metal detecting with), and two of her friends there. The Crosses were very well liked by them. One of the friends had lost her husband just 3 months ago, and she started crying when I said I was gonna make Crosses for all of them. I do believe the Lord does work in mysterious ways. I posted the same pictures on Facebook that I posted here, and they seem to be really resonating with people. I was planning on making 16 Crosses, I think I may be up to 24 now. I get two Crosses out of a 3/4 x 5 x 24 inch piece of Cherry, and I’ve been buying them 4 at a time, so 8 Crosses per delivery. Scroll sawing seems to be making straight lines or curved lines, I am excellent at both. The bad part is my curved lines are when I’m trying to go straight, and my straight lines are when I’m trying to make a curve, DOH! My S’s look like Z’s, and my Z’s look like S’s. Small patch I have Rapid Resizer, and have had issues with using it (my fault, I’m just not that smart) I used my wife’s stencil kit to cut out the lettering on the samples, and rapid resizer has answered my e-mail today, so I should be able to use it going forwards, like on the Crosses I’m going to give out. I thank you for sending me there.
