December 30, 20187 yr Popular Post As I posted in another thread I have started making 18-20 wooden block planes that I made 4 several years ago copied from a Wood magazine. Since I have a presentation at our local WW club, I plan on giving a presentation on how to make these. I figure if I give each member that comes to the meeting one of these to hold and examine while I go through the steps of building one, it might be more clear in their mind how to do it themselves. And they might not fall asleep during the presentation. Yesterday I showed the blocks glued up for the bodies, and the one I am using for the pattern. The next step was to roughcut out the 1/4" thick sides and sand edges to finish size. After they were sanded close to size I cut the blocks I had previously glued up 4" from the heel of the plane to the mouth of the blade slot on a 45°angle. The cut-off is then turned over and butted up tight to the heel piece, thus creating a "V" for the plane blade to rest in. and the sides are glued on to hold the assembly together. It takes lots of clamps to dlamp these up , I ran of two planes short and had to wait to finish the final two.

December 30, 20187 yr Thanks for the tutorial! Those look awesome! Remember what "Norm" used to say- "You can never have enough clamps".
December 30, 20187 yr You make some really neat stuff for the end of the year/holiday presentations. +1000 on the like(s). Great job as always.
December 31, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Today I cutout the shape of the plane to match the side panels. I will save the last piece I cut off to make the wedge that holds the blade in the slot. Now that the planes are ruff-ed out The next step is to shape them, that will all be hand work, Edited December 31, 20187 yr by Dadio

I have never heard of those til you mentioned them. I know little about hand planes, These came from a write up in Wood Magazine about 6-8 years ago and they were so much fun to make, I had to make some more. They work very well too for planing small projects and since they are wood the sole doesn't mar the wood. Herb
December 31, 20187 yr Lots of progress here. Just wondering as you stated that shaping in handwork, could it not be done on the sander ?

Yes I go as far as I can eith the disc an belt sander, then to finish them it is hand filing and sanding. 5 minutes ago, Warped & Twisted said: Since you are interested in wooden planes might be something in this link that would interest you. https://www.google.com/search?q=Krenov+style+planes&client=firefox-b-1&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjc3JyUh8nfAhVzHzQIHdRmCHAQsAR6BAgDEAE&biw=1280&bih=593 Thanks for the link, there is a lot of good stuff there, many good ideas I can use. December 31, 20187 yr Popular Post Works of art Herb. You are a master, no questioning that. The club members that don't show are going to wish they had! Once I had one in my hands, I'd probably never hear a word you said 'cause I'd be admiring what I just received. Maybe just pass a couple around during the presentation, then once done, like the talk show hosts, "for everyone in the audience, you'll be receiving your own personal plane today for staying awake...."

Good point, Dave, but it will at least keep them awake, I am going to take a box of Bandaides too. I just know that someone will run their thumb over the blade to see if it is sharp. Herb
January 1, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Well they are starting to take shape now, I worked on the finish shaping the bodies today. The disc and stationary belt sander got them close, I passed them over the jointer to square up the sole to the sides and open the mouth so that a blade will just barely slide thru. Then I finished them off with a sanding block and a bow sander. Then to the ROS with 320 grit before giving them a shot of Shellac.

Thanks for all the hard work putting together this tutorial. these planes your making are and look even better. Are you giving a plane to each club member or are you using them just for your presentation?
