Just kidding.... mostly.

 

So, I got my lumber (all by myself even ), saw horses (pack of 2 for $29 at Lowe's.. not bad), two 36" clamps, and a bunch of other stuff... came home, set everything up... then figured out why the circular saw wouldn't cut the 2x4's... the blade was bad (actually burned a couple of my boards, but it will trim off). BACK to Lowe's to get another, back home... then looking all over the internet to find a tutorial to change the blade. It's an OLD circular saw... I saw (see what I did there hehehe) several links to owner manuals (all defunct) for a "retro Skilsaw circular saw"... really?! Finally found a video that showed me how to lock the blade in place so I could change it (vice grips, btw... it has no blade lock button). 

 

SO... I finally got all my lumber cut to size. Of course hubby has to chime in about "why do you need that many boards?" I wanted to tell him "mind your business", but instead I just woman-splained it to him. 

 

Then the jigsaw.... I'm glad I got extra blades. The blade that came with it worked ok, but using one with more teeth worked better. However... OMG MY ARMS HURT! Between holding the board, and having to motivate the jigsaw forward. I mean.. I know I'm no longer a spring chicken... but I didn't think I'd be a stew hen either (ya know, the ones that no longer lay eggs, so the only thing they're good for is the stew pot). 

 

So, now I'm relaxing... and pricing band saws LOL

I was able to successfully resist the urge to slap the ugly off a couple of guys who had a wise crack about me as I was tying the 2x4's in the truck bed. I figured I had already paid the rest of my christmas money for materials... I didn't have enough left for bail money.

use the clamps to hold the board on the saw horses. Having both hands free to manipulate the jigsaw makes it less work (from one not so spring chicken to another )

I'll have to try that. The boards I were cutting were about 2 1/2' long... I'd saw a bit, move the board so I was sawing between the horses, then have to go to the other end on the other side of the horses

 

Ah the learning curve, that at the beginning is more like a 90 degree bend, sometimes maybe even 180.

 

 

Love the title, was thinking you cut your finger off or something.

LOL sometimes it feels like a 360 with increasing speed each time around

 

I wouldn't do that... Knowing my luck, it would be the wrong tone and I wouldn't be able to "salute" the idiots anymore

On the plus side... I got to pass the "measure twice, cut once" adage onto my 9 year old daughter. 

"Mom, why are you putting two marks on each board?"

(explanation of why you measure twice.... yada yada yada)

It won't last long, soon you'll be doing the bossing. I remember going through in-processing HQ before gettin on the bus for basic, my cycle was in at the processing HQ for three days, by our second day, we had our BDU's and boots, another cycle was coming in for their first day and we were already sitting on the front steps calling the day olds noobs, as we were only in the Army two days ourselves, yet we were already cocky and giving the day olds a hard time! Yelling at them, NEWBIE, NEWBIE. We were all 8 up ourselves, raggy looking, brand new BDU's, caps all scrunched up, everything new and jacked up. But we felt we were already veterans. Time for you to find a noob ma, and start hassling em around here. You been here long enough!

Vise Grips in this application tend to bend, distort and/or damage things..

instead, unplug the saw...

raise the saw's shoe..

open the blade guard..

push the blade into/onto (which ever is convenient for you) a piece of wood to jamb the blade..

sliding the blade into a saw kerf is even a better plan..

or..

if there is a hole in the blade (this is what it is there for) insert a Philips screwdriver through it and lay the blade of the screwdriver up against the bottom of the saw's shoe to keep the blade from turning...

w/ a little practice you can use a screwdriver set back into a gullet..

but can the Vise Grip plan...

use Progressor blades matched to the task... (scroll the page)

you'll start a love affair w/ them... last a long time and have attitude built in...

clamp the 2by to the top of just one of the saw horses (in line) and not to two horses....

or gang cut..

lay several conveniently spaced apart 2by's across both horses..

lay a 2by across (perpendicular) the laid out 2by's sandwiching them between the top of the horse and under the perpendicular 2by..

install your clamps...
