That is a simple half lap joint Artie.  It is what I used in my little corner table top.  You should have no problems, unless the cross is quite large...

They are gonna be small, 12-18 inches tall.

Seeing as how I have never done a lap joint, and it seems to be the best joint for this project, I’m gonna go for it. Plenty of time to work up to Stick level joints. (Well until I’ve run the forests outta trees, anyways)

of all the tools you could have to do this joinery make it a shoulder plane...

leave the Stanley 92 on the shelf even if you are paid to take one...

I ended up w/ an LV Shoulder Plane (actually the the whole set)... let the love affair commence...

then you'll discover the LV side plane...  sure do hope you aren't prone to heart failure...

Yeah, think I’m gonna try to do this with the existing toolage I have :)  I have Sunday and Monday to myself to get some shopwork done and start on they Crosses.

sub an insanely sharp paring chisels for the planes...

shaving works out way better than sanding in the long run... VOE...

There are a multitude of spline options. With today's glues, splines are really superfluous but, they sure can catch the eye.

Not sure if that will move up into the gotta have list, but I could see it happen if the $$$ gets better LOL.

Artie, it's great for larger carcasses and boxes. And, it's a blast to use. You can make some interesting joints with variable spacing and, nested keys using contrasting woods.
