I am new to this site and it was suggested that I introduce myself.  So, here goes.

My name is Nick Poindexter - hence Pdexter as a user name.  I am a graduate of the University of Missouri Kansas City.  I started out in hospital work as a Respiratory Therapist.  Then, I moved to a more lucrative career in medical sales, working for Siemens.  Much later in life, I decided to buy a Pizzeria and become an owner in the restaurant trade.  After 12+ years of that, I had a heart attack just prior to my 2nd grandchild being born and my 2nd of 3 daughters being married in Boston.

 

I ended up on the disabled list and have spent the last 8 years recovering.  It became apparent that I could no longer work a job.  It has been a long road, but I am doing fine for the moment.  Not being able to work, I started dabbling in woodworking and art.   That led me here.

 

I joined a woodcarving group and learned to carve.  My first grandson came along and then my 4th granddaughter.

Great to have you HERE and here Nick! Great to know the recovery has gone well.

Looking forward to seeing more of your creativity and art in wood.

Along side the CNC carvers here, @IrishWoodCarver and @Steve Krumanaker also do chip carving. Probably others but I lose track when the train derails.

You flatter me Dave, I am very much a novice and don't have a clear idea what I'm doing. Incidentally, that's much worse since I got new glasses!

Well what I've seen of your work, you at least know which end of the knife/chisels to use so you're light years ahead of me.

Try turning them over...bi-focals go toward the bottom. Well unless you're trying to work under the dash of a vehicle, I've heard wearing them upside down helps.

Have you ever tried that? The only way to keep them on your face is to duct-tape them there!

Tried it...oh yeah...duct tape no...elastic head-band, zip ties and @Gene Howe head wrap...check, check & check.

Welcome Nick, as GrandpaDave mentioned, I also carve - all types: relief, in the round and chip carving (which is prob my favorite)

Oh, I love them soooo much.  Not so good though for diabetes.

Irish the carver... Great to have a mentor who plays with knives.  I always have to buy bandaids when they are on sale.

 I'm trying to figure out the navigation on this site.  I'm slow, but learning as I go.  Thank you for the welcome.  I am not sure about tutorials....do you have something in mind?
