Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners September 5, 2018

Featured Replies

Summer continues to hang on here in south central PA. Heat indices over 100. Very humid.

Just a reminder, if you haven't entered the Patriot Raffel, the closing date has been moved up to September 15- just 10 days away. We are a little short of our goal and could use your help. Our Patriot Turners-

I need to apologize to @RustyFN, He posted a beautiful bowl a couple of weeks ago and somehow I missed it. The bowl was turned from apple and has some gorgeous grain.

Rusty tells us more about the history of the wood, in his post-

@Ron Altier showed us a really nice vase for holding knitting needles. Ron's wife is an awesome "needleler".

Ron explains the blank construction in his post-

Ron also started a thread about finding the center of a blank and how other turners accomplish this. He eventually settles on a shop made jig.

Check out what our turners use for center finding as they responded to Ron's request-

@Steve Krumanaker has already started on his Christmas Ornaments and they are gorgeous.

Steve explains his technique for coloring these beauties in his post-

What’s Coming Up-

From The Internet-

Sometimes we just get careless-

@HandyDan sent me this video link. He must have remembered I have a love/hate relationship with the skew chisel. This video has a super explanation/demonstration of rolling a bead using the skew.

Last week I shared a Mike Peace video using the jam chuck. In that video, he was mounting a canister he turned. Mike posted a set of videos on that cannister project-

Rick Turns shared his August YouTube woodturning video list-

The Woodturning OnLine newsletter arrived this week. As always there is plenty of great information. There is a particularly interesting article on pierced turnings by Gord Langer. He explains the process and provides sources for tools.

Everything Else-

Last week I mentioned I turned a small finial. @HandyDan showed us what small really is! Awesome turning, Dan!

I finally got the finish on that little turning.

The bottom is manzanita, the domed lid is a piece of very old spalted maple from Lexington VA and the finial is hard maple ebonized with India ink. Turned entirely with Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ).

Safe turning and wear that face shield

Lew you are on a roll today. Glad you finally finished that turning.

Thanks Lew.  Great thread again this week.  Your turnings can only be defined as art.  Nice work.

Thanks Lew! Really enjoyed that skew video. he's got good skills with it.

Steve
