Thats about the only speed, somewhere in the lower 1740 or less they had on that size motor back then. A lot of them were not reversible so I hope you lucked out. You could add a ground wire if it makes you feel safer. The oiling holes does not mean ball bearings, could be sleeve bushings! But using on a band saw probably won't get it too hot anyway!! In certain parts of the country dirt dobbers might need to be cleaned out before trying to run it.  Looks like you might be back in service and ready to go.

Priced a new pulley at TSC today....1/2" bore, 3" diameter, no keyway slot....~$12-$16....did not find a new cord for the motor,,,,but, since the old lathe was junked out, with a bad motor...I could use the cord from it..( found out an Aldis backsaw will cut cords..:rolleyes:)

"Rat Nest"?   This was AFTER removing 1/2 a roll of black tape!   Pulled the cord back through and separated the two sides....

Them's bare wires there!    Thinking I could just wire nut these to the new cord's wires, and add a ground to the case?:huh:

Short of tearing the motor down..this is about as far as I can go.     I also dribble a few shots of 3in1 oil down the oilers, and spun the shaft a bit by hand.:ph34r:

 

Still wanting to dig into that mass of tape....mind find a couple wire nuts?    Might just use new ones, though.   Will need a conduit clamp, for where the new cord comes out at...

Well....got rid of this ...mess

There WAS two large wire nuts inside all the tape...and a good thing they were taped.....they came apart.

Found some better wire nuts.   Cut just outside of the bare spots on the wires....worked on the one pair, then the other...And added a ground lug to the green wire..

dad used to solder these things together, and then add the nuts and tape.....When I get a roll, I'll tape these up.  More to prevent them rubbing against each other.

The self-drilling screw goes through the box, but not into the motor's case.

Along with the tape, will need a wire clamp.   Should be able to keep the dust out, too. 

Used enough hand tools, this might have gone over to that thread..

Although, I did use a cordless drill...to drive the ground screw:rolleyes:

Once the other stuff gets here, I can get going on the rebuild.

You might consider a Romex connector in the hole through which the wires run. It can take the strain off of the connections and help reduce rubbing of the main wire on the edge of the hole.

Plugged it in, right where it sat on the table.

 

Heard it make a burp-like sound..that was about all....hand was placed on top of the motor, barely feel anything...looked down at the shaft....could not see the flat spot?    Shaft was turning at full speed...making zero noise!  And..it was spinning the correct direction!    Started it a couple more times, to double check....motor did not even get warm.   We be HAPPY:cowboy::cowboy::cowboy:.

 

Need to go shopping....and then find enough time to install all the goodies.    And build a dresser?  We'll see..stay tuned....

Somehow....I have lost almost an entire weekend......Monster Migraine hit.....late Friday night, spent the rest of that night in the ER.....spent a little time shopping with the boss, yesterday and today...I think....

 

Head is still on another planet.....spent a lot of time sleeping, or so I have been told....not sure what was in all them shots the ER Nurses hit me with...both shoulders are sore.

 

Never found a Romex clamp the correct size.....went back to tape.....will use a few wire ties, to make a strain relief.  

 

Will update when the head returns....

Ok, Chester Drawers is done.     Cleared the bench....then modified it a bit..

I wanted no parts rolling off the bench, or down a dog hole....took the bandsaw apart...one key stock about fell out....anther, the keyway was too worn out..

Bolts, rings, keystocks (2)......Those fancy pliers didn't work...used a pair of screwdrivers, instead.  Shaft was a tad worn..

Got everything back together...

Nail set?   Helped drive the last ring into it's slot.   Scrathed my head for a minute, trying to remember which way this went back in..

Figured I try it this way.   Got the wheel and the pulley back on....ran the motor for a bit....no shaking, not much noise...rechecked the set screws to make sure they were tight.    Added a 1/4" blade.

And ran it for a bit....blade stayed put.....teeth in the center of the wheels...

pulley even stayed put...when I went to remove this earlier, the slots weren't even lined up...was worn that bad on the shaft.

 

Strange thing.....I haven't swapped out the motors...yet.    The Craftsman one NOW starts right up...no issues.   May swap them out, anyway..when I feel like laying on the shop floor....not today.   We'll see how this goes..

You may luck out and not need to. As badly as that shaft was worn, it's possible the loading on the shaft was stalling the motor depending on how tight the belt was.

I would keep a close eye on the bearings though. They may not have felt rough when cold but as they heat up they could be seizing...something contributed to the under-cutting of that shaft.; just saying.

OK...the jack finally came to the shop...

I gave the bolts a spritz of WD40...

Then went off in search of the correct socket....grabbed the wrong one earlier....

Grabbed a 3/8", instead of a 1/2" deep well...Oh well....at least the  "Pizza, Pizza" for lunch was good..

The jack was to lower this motor, once the bolts were off.....of course...this one fell off the jack....had to hold the other motor in place on the jack...

And move the saw out into a direct line...while this thing trundled along....got the top two bolts snugged up, let the jack down.  Then finished up the work on the bolts.

Had to move the motor all the way to the left....even then, the were "issues"

This be just a test cut...in a scrap of Ash.   no wavys, no burning...cuts nice and quiet.

Even a rip cut came out looking good.  

Will keep the other motor around awhile....just in case.....may even try to get a lathe running, some day..

Yep, good news. I can't help but mention...the motor was sitting next to what I think is a Simpson tackle box on the floor. I say this because I think I have that exact same box; but get this: I bought it new in the early 60's!

Now that you mention it, I've got one too except mine is a tan color; got mine probably mid 60's although I didn't use it for tackle. Mine was the "tool kit" for all my slot car equipment. Still have it today. I keep electrical smalls in it.

I have had not found any parts online keep getting the same feedback out of stock and unavailable. Any suggestions where to purchase or how to go about machining? Thank you, Josh

Josh, welcome to a TPW.  That’s going to be a tough part to find.  Your friend may be better off trying to buy a different saw.  I’d scour Craigslist or EBay.

Welcome aboard Josh, glad to have you here.  Good luck with the search.

I'll second the welcome to the forum. I searched that part and it looks like it might just be a stock diameter bar, with a couple of light grooves and a key way cut into it. It's never cheap to walk into a machine shop, but taking the old part to one might get you one made. My search turned up several folks looking for the same part and getting no where....I'm thinking Ron's advice might be the best: buying a different saw.
