March 1, 20188 yr Popular Post It's been a nice couple of days here, but winter is scheduled to return to the northeast tomorrow. Our turners have been busy with projects, ideas and questions. So let's get to it! Last week @HandyDan showed us a really neat way to created threaded inserts for turned objects. I happened across this site that sells brass metal inserts for that special project- They have many sizes. Their site is- https://www.fromwalnuttoantlers.com/shop @RustyFN posted a rough turned bowl he made. It sure is gorgeous! Rust wasn't certain of the wood species and several members offered opinions. Check out the complete thread- @Gerald got some turning blanks prepped and started on a vase. Nice laser rig! Read about his plans for his vase- @Steve Krumanaker gave us a demonstration of his shop made laser engraver. Talk about an awesome piece of equipment! Steve even included a video of the operation in his thread @Buck Nall posted a question about turning bradford pear wood. Several members offered suggestions. Check out his post and give Buck your opinion- @Gerald is considering setting up a stand in a consignment shop. He asked for thoughts and opinions on this. Stop over at his post and see if you can add to what has already been said- I was trying to catch up on some of Capt. Eddies' videos and he mentioned the Southwest Association of Turners turning symposium for this summer. It's in Waco Texas in August. Here's a link for more information- https://www.swaturners.org/index.php Also, our most generous sponsor, Easy Wood Tools, will be part of the Woodworkers Show in Milwaukee, WI on March 9-11,2018. More information here- http://www.thewoodworkingshows.com/milwaukee.html Mike Peace put up an informative video on live centers. He looks at some of the characteristics and various vendor. Pretty interesting- Capt.Eddie did a similar review of a specific brand here- A while back, we featured Tim Yoder making a platter with a "cosmic paint" scheme. He recently posted a another platter but uses a different approach to applying the paint. While you are watching the video, check out the Easy Wood Chuck! Safe turning
March 1, 20188 yr Wow Lew, another awesome compilation. When you see the recap, makes one realize how active our turning members are with the diversity of their projects. Thanks for the link on the thread inserts too.
March 1, 20188 yr They are asking a pretty penny for those inserts. Is there a video that shows how to install them? I don't see ant bosses for gluing purposes. Nice recap for the week.
March 1, 20188 yr Another nice job and lots of good information. I do have to agree with Dan, those inserts seem pricey but what isn't these days? Steve
March 1, 20188 yr Saw a guy at the Gwinnett (sp?) woodworking club on YouTube using Mason jar rings as inserts. Not as classy as those brass ones but, not as expensive, either.
March 2, 20188 yr Lew you have done it again. Cannot express how great it is to see this every week and how much time it must take. I just finished an update ,ok total redo, of our club brochure and I know this takes time. Thanks for all you do
March 2, 20188 yr Author @Grandpadave52 Thanks! I thought those inserts might be appropriate for something like a burial urn. @HandyDan Thank You! I sent an email to "From Walnuts to Antlers" about how the inserts were mounted/used. I'll post their reply when I get it. @Steve Krumanaker Thanks! I had never seen the inserts for sale before so I wasn't sure about the level of pricing. @Gene Howe Thanks for the idea about mason jar lids. Cool idea. @Gerald Than You! I really appreciate all of our turners posting their work and comments.
