Starting up....

59bdb0cb831e0_cornerposts.jpg.7c517564651212d117734f4f3bc9154f.jpg

Ripped from a wider plank of 5/4" Maple...bandsaw ripped to a 1-3/4" width....needed jointed..

jointer.jpg.c1236623e8e82d733e60c0f68b246125.jpg

Wasn't quite right...wanted to tip a bit....

59bdb174ec93c_No.0-7.jpg.67f9bd786b42cc857311c67cd66759ed.jpg

Used a no.14 jack plane...this bigger plane, a Ohio Tool Co. No. 0-7   worked decently on a few longer rails

stained.jpg.7efc3a3924b31b5d47d7b2f31c44046f.jpg

Charles Neil had stained the panel...needed to remove the coloured parts...

un-stained.jpg.3beb54609b00df681aa64774d19c5671.jpg

No. 4 smooth plane seemed to work....soon had a pile of parts..

59bdb270bf3a9_woodsupply.jpg.764a38dcc1db9bf666702294496d53d0.jpg

Set most of this aside.   This morning, at a yard sale, found a couple pipe clamps for a ten-spot..

clamps.jpg.aae46716a8f16994e67c58dbff11861a.jpg

About 5' long or so....came in handy, since I "only" have 5 in the shop....

59bdb32987dc2_firstpanelglueup.jpg.1abd4c5ece11de72e5f95cea1b36b684.jpg

Jointed a couple edges.   This one might be for the back of the chest....older pipe clamps needed a pair of visegrips to keep them from sliding away...

More jointer work...

jointed.jpg.e1ac31c6c71327c026ca8fbbe9725d5a.jpg

This time around, I used a Stanley No.7c.   Somehow got things into the clamps..

59bdb40c154b4_2clampedup.jpg.b813721b81568775a673f2a7950705c3.jpg

And set this thing aside til tomorrow.....Figure out the foot profile, and used the bandsaw a bit...

59bdb46f9bc45_footprofiles.jpg.f6979683857667b07bc8b80c584104fc.jpg

Then set the length of the rails and a center rail..

rails.jpg.d82d4b6c017ee2b951c1bd9254af2575.jpg

Bottom rails will be a tad wider that the top.   I'll cut the panels into two raised panels.    We'll see IF the back panel gets divided...

Picked up some new chisels yesterday..

chisels.jpg.46d2638ab1b5f211994b33c4c8a39216.jpg

Local Aldi's store had these on sale...$6.99 + tax.....

Waiting on the panels to cure out....Still working out what the ends will look like.

Stay tuned...

Did a little work, today....made a big mess, too...

shavings.jpg.260ce6bb577a528ba5e0e129c4dafd88.jpg

And, I had even swept the floor twice before this mess showed up....Set up the Stanley #45

59bee0ea78f0b_ploughplane.jpg.c6a3971ac7875692178ef90fec082bbd.jpg

And got about half of the grooves done...

grooved.jpg.455ed23ee5164abd3faf9567dd3ea431.jpg

I'll do the long rails after I get the panels raised....Removed one panel from the clamps

squared.jpg.0553df38cc983dfbc331c2b88b03aa4a.jpg

Trying to get this squared up..

59bee1ac22178_2lines.jpg.09ac90bfc5416540f990fa8feab3e040.jpg

Wasn't having much luck....one board had an angle to it's length....finally was able to make two panels out of it..

59bee20ea86b2_2panels.jpg.89f8f7b7e08abef2f2eb5004d438dc49.jpg

Figured I could stand these back to back, and mark a few straighter lines...made a jig to hold things...

jigged.jpg.3260cbcf74512f66ff6bded5227a1e0b.jpg

Marked a line.   Used two Stanley #4 planes....one set deeper than the smoother one.   Had to set the coarse one aside, was getting a might too warm to hold onto!

Finally, got all four edges beveled....went with a back bevel.....stood the panel on edge in the vise, and fine tuned the fit...

59bee318ea90f_finetuned.jpg.f3c87097c0a449196963a8151ede571c.jpg

Used that little block plane back there, to shave a bit off where needed.  Set the completed panel aside, and set up for #2

59bee38a0bd93_panelandchisels.jpg.22b86fc0d50066675b9b50f2c979288a.jpg

Marked a "stop line".    Laid these things out for a picture, or two.....these are about 2 years old.   Been well used

chisels.jpg.4b0cb85821cf0f34957f6c63a19927df.jpg

While I am tuning up the new chisels, I may refresh these "old" chisels.

Gave up for the day, plumb tuckered out.    Maybe when I get back tomorrow from the Doctor's office, I might start in again.

Stay tuned...

looks nice.

i like my power tools, but appreciate your work with those hand tools.

i can make 6-8 doors in a day.  rails, stiles, raised panels.

Stanley No. 4c Type 20 ( red logo, Made in England)  was set kind of deep, to hog most of the bevel off.    Stanley No. 4,type 9 was set for see-through shavings..and finished things up.   The Stanley No. 60-1/2  was for fine tuning the fit into the grooves.

I've have a Millers-Falls 56B that looks identical to this one...

After refurb...original Japanning was black...my color of choice for most which need repainted is Rustoleum, Hammered Black (more of a charcoal gray.)

This was pretty rusty and the knife looked like it had been trimming heads off of T-50 staples...when I finally got it all cleaned, polished and sharpened

(really properly sharpened and honed), this little plane is sweet.

20170711_211446.thumb.jpg.64439aaf2d6df2ef55bca282b23127a5.jpg

The Buck Bros chisel was in a bucket of yard sale stuff I gave $2.00 for...totally rusty and edge looked like it had been used for a pry bar...I had

planned to use it to open paint cans until I saw some you had found and re-worked...went out buffed the rust off and saw the Buck stamp...

Good to see what other people find and do otherwise it would be opening paint cans.

I love seeing your ha d plane work, but what impresses me the most is what you do with the 45. I just don't see many folks using theirs as much as you do....nice!

Stanley "Cordovan" 60-1/2, and the Millers Falls No. 56B

59c051c19b43f_sideview.jpg.94c31bb3c07f7b7f07aef4a6d85f9a21.jpg

Managed to get the 56B sharpened up tonight....

shaving.jpg.a047f32f9484ef7c90e2d38084b46c65.jpg

Maple 1x4 I picked up at Menard's today...seems to be an 8' long piece of Birdseye Maple.....might dress things up a bit?

Got the new chisels all honed up tonight..

chisels.jpg.6026c8b0bfe1438549d377982643c1df.jpg

Bottom four are the new ones, top four are 2+ years old.  will see how this turn out.  The edges along the sides of the blades are thicker..

edges.thumb.JPG.169c22b65098ca321fe74c8723da12a5.JPG

And a little too sharp.   These two are the 8mm ones.   Almost a firmer chisel?

Shop is closed, Monday.....maybe Tuesday, I can get back to work?

Wow, wonder who copied whose design? Almost identical clones of each other...I may have seen the Stanley version before and not even realized it...

Those are some pretty nice chisels for $6.99. I like that squared edge versus the slightly tapered edge. I would think those will do a nice clean job on your mortises and dovetails??

My 56 wasn't as nice as yours.  Yours looks like original japanning. This was in a box of junk treasures

I picked up at a garage sale...It laid around here forever until I began refurbing it last fall. Once mom

got sick I sorta lost interest. It was late this spring when I finally got it done...

Stanley came out first.....MillersFalls was a direct knock-off in 1929.....

Rain showers this morning..

59c1934dd4116_TheDungeonCreek.jpg.4e870ec18043f177a4c257c3148298a5.jpg

Had a few of these running across the floor...

bevels.jpg.35b05ade26e43bdd414b4081cc0398ae.jpg

Worked on panel #2....dry fit?

59c193c6a0ba5_dryfit.jpg.69a7edb89e8d41c11d86d846ecce45c1.jpg

Used this to set the length of the rails.....only to find out I had cut the first set too short.....needed to do this fit up first.  Grrr.... I think I have a use for those two short rails..  Still....something wasn't quite right......anyway, I worked on some tenons...

59c1946bbf824_shouldercuts.jpg.acf88b0c230ae155bb3cca6556d8a219.jpg

Mitresaw  to make the shoulder cuts...bandsaw to make the cheek cuts...

tenons.jpg.3b99019affe52399a92f87bdb987e472.jpg

Rails were done.....but not quite right.... Decided to just "plough ahead"

59c194fa43f5c_ploughplane.jpg.f49324b659fd1e9c4f0b5a6fa6024998.jpg

As the long rails still needed a groove milled.....

59c1953beaf12_mortisetools.jpg.b743b69e42a05225e5d4620cf28ba030.jpg

Mortise tools.....got all but two mortises chopped....wasn't going too well.....fitting up-wise.....another dry fit..

59c195a4d9fbb_fulldryfit.jpg.2e400e8bd2701e27aa8fddcae775c9b4.jpg

This is the "after"....first one like this wasn't even close.....turned out, the panels were just enough out of square, and a 1/8" too long and too wide.....had to go back, re-size, and re-bevel both panels, and make sure they matched each other......The rail/stile at the top needs two mortises chopped.    Maybe tomorrow, I can get this glued up?   Not before I make sure the back's two panels match the front two....helps to keep the case square.    Today was acting like a Monday.....3 hours, and this was it?

Need to mill two long rails, and get a start on the end panels.    Today just was one of those days.....you'll have that, on the bigger jobs.

Will see how things go,  right now, it is Beer:30     Stay tuned..

You got more done in 3 hours than I did all day...I did fix breakfast for 6 people (7 counting myself), one travel snack pack and dishes done if that counts for anything plus a trip to town for errands.

Another 3 hours today....before the back acted up.....

59c2d9b863aae_badclamp.jpg.e8cedaf6c5c2568633996392316390c3.jpg

"Bad clamp!"   Where it finally wound up, after being thrown against the wall, yesterday....

59c2da290ebf3_glueup1.jpg.d68409605f8f82e9c38e9dd1af32dbdd.jpg

Jointed an edge or two, spread some glue, and made a couple more panels...vise acted as an extra pair of hands...

59c2da8735b45_glueup2.jpg.6e52880746e2668099283b29dc25198a.jpg

Held things while I jointed the edges, spread some glue, and clamped it up.   Even helped hold the cauls.

Chopped two mortises.   While the frame was apart, I used one of the panels to mark the sizes needed for the back frame's panels...cut those out...1/2" smaller....used a wider center stile...

Got those cut panels out of the way, and the fight was on...

59c2db5fa9c31_glueup3.jpg.75ab1047870a7ea9e4a471fe0ede1d4d.jpg

Needed a box end wrench as a "cheater" to get the clamps tight.   While everything was in the clamps nice and snug,..

pinned.jpg.bfe43131df43ad4ad4eb6adfd6d648a5.jpg

I "pinned" the joints.   Set this mess aside to dry..

59c2dc3045a38_setasides.jpg.724f0f63fb9cafdf8839792ddc9a2e4a.jpg

Needed to set up the Stanley #45..

59c2dc739e288_adjusterfence.jpg.f3a407ae718ecc0b595e4454f001cc39.jpg

Cutter was already set....needed to adjust the fence to get the cutter centered...fence has a bolt, that adjusts the fence in or out.   Another bolt then locks it in place...

Set up a jig, and got the center stile ready for grooves..

jigged.jpg.ecc44b51c0820d4cbdda3215b16c441e.jpg

needed both edges done.    Ok, got that out of the way....went to work on the freshly cut panels, to get then ready for being raised...

uneven.jpg.475f0e93d73154b91f0df5b5815deaff.jpg

Seems there was a problem.....one board was way thicker than the other....we have ways...

59c2ddec88332_camberedjackplane.jpg.041329ee563c9cc473ea28c0e40a11b0.jpg

A Stanley No. 5c, with a cambered iron.   Going across the grain.   Made a LOT of thick shavings..

shavings.jpg.3907af3c2696a97502ce109b374c9c59.jpg

There USED to be some high spots.....used to be.   80 grit belt in the beltsander, on some spots, mainly used the jack plane.    Turned the panels ( had to do BOTH panels) as needed, and cleaned things up with the No.4 smoother..

Swept the floor, turned off the fan and the bench light, and stumbled back upstairs....and called it a day.   At least I got a little bit done, this time.

Need to haul two boards down to the shop...tomorrow.  Need parts out of one, and make a lid out of the other.  Stay  tuned..

Ok, Gatorades being consumed....Uncle Charles even had the toes cramping up.

Got the panels raised today...

59c5ad138cf30_raisedpanels.jpg.2e3cda60ddff49f3e16b3ac660c6db8d.jpg

Took a while, but both fit in the grooves.   Got a few grooves milled today as well,  you can see a couple here.

Top and bottom rails were ripped from a 1 x 4 x 26"  Birdseye Maple plank.   Rails.jpg.141027c30dda0447e8632b018756fe41.jpg

1-9/16" wide.    Then a groove was ran down one edge.    Needed a "new" center stile made, as the old one wasn't wide enough..

59c5ae2224e83_centerstile.jpg.0659f49b022042efbb95147435c5258d.jpg

Had to run the Stanley 45 along both edges.    Also has been marked out for tenons...I also used the old  corner post/stiles to check for fit....

Curly.jpg.9bcc8146441ef8592c789ddb7beb8555.jpg

Hmmm, Curly Maple, AND Birdseye Maple,  and Spalted Maple....might be interesting with the shellac hits this thing...

Cramps in the toes, and back of the legs....called it a day.    Maybe tomorrow, I can mill a few tenons, chop a few mortises, and spread some glue around...

Stay tuned....

Whoa...you've got the "whole grain meal deal" cooking there! Sweet.

Got a little bit done today.    Tenons got milled..

59c6bf7041837_tenonmilled.jpg.dd91c9726cafa615e96ea0d3bca6de9c.jpg

Wider ones needed trimmed a bit.   Got out a jig to chop mortises with..

jig.jpg.97fdfe40bbd1adf9cb793c3d9bc1c957.jpg

At least for these.   Had to adjust the spacing a bit, for the stiles...

59c6c02a99081_testfit.jpg.3041d31d45bf9fa168a35ed01b192b5a.jpg

Tested for fit on the rails....stiles needed mortises, as well..

59c6c0ab825b4_stilemortise.jpg.a76355d367a1e2eb6747451e8d2edd8e.jpg

Got to the point I could spread some glue around...

59c6c0fb41c67_gluedup.jpg.0cdca08f801b8fa6199f2ccafac99fd8.jpg

Nice part of this being the back of the chest,,,I can match it to the front.   It has a gap on one end, at the bottom.    Mainly on the inside, will be covered by the floor.    needed the diagonal clamp to pull thing almost square.     waiting on the glue to cure enough that I can get this thing off the bench...

Stay tuned
