Friday, September 1, 2017, What's on your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

So fellow Patriot Woodworkers, I have a question.  What the heck happened to August.  Is it just me or did the month of August vaporize before our very eyes?  At any rate, here we are on Labor Day weekend.  The eastern half of the U.S. is drying to dry out and the other half is in a sweat box.  My shop is nice and busy right now building stock for a large show coming up on Veteran's Day.  I have 48 yard dice drying in the shop so that I can paint pips on them Tuesday.  That would be over 1000 little black dots that I need to paint and I'm not really looking forward to doing such a mind numbing chore.

Mr. Moody is headed for the mountains of Gatinburg this weekend and all I have scheduled to to walk in a parade with a state senator friend of mind on Monday.  So here's where I ask of of y'all, "What's on your weekend agenda?"

Camping with some friends.   57 degrees, wind and rain.  Tail end of Harvey as it heads up Ohio River Valley.    Perfect camping weather, or not.

Last day in Hot Springs. Then back home and into the shop. Maybe we could raid @John Moody 's stash over the weekend . The burro will know the way

No shop time this weekend, I'm afraid. :( Been invited to the wedding of a young lady who worked at the garden center for a number of years. Getting hitched on September the 2nd, exactly 45 years after the LOML and I tied the knot. :) Where have the years gone?

John

Not sure yet - may head up and move more of the wife's stuff home and/or continue work on the remodel in my shop

Supposed to have rain all weekend.  Should hit the shop and see what comes of it.

just got some spacers cut and glued into place in a face frame cabinet so i can make some drawers for the inside of that cabinet.  glue will be set tomorrow.  but tomorrow is pistol match day, so they won't get touched until sunday or monday when i measure and make the drawers (2).  and then i can turn my attention back to the paver project and finish up the two stoops that need pavers cut and mortared in place.  got the stair handrail post caps in yesterday.

goofy dog approves, i think.

almost 400 pavers set in place so far, another dozen or so to go.  16x16x2, 40 pounds each.

that's Leah, she does the stairs just fine, and at 60 pounds, i'll let her carry herself wherever she is going.  caught her right as she was raising her right front paw to head down.  she goes up 2 at a time, you know, important dog stuff to do in the distance.

Mostly TBD...transportation services to football game tonight and for other activities at school tomorrow.

Tomorrow PM is the Celebration of Life Services at the High School for the student who passed this past Sunday from leukemia.  The gym seats 4200 w/o chairs on the floor...anticipate 85-90% capacity. We lost a great and humble future leader.:(

I need to mow and do some garden work. Shop time will be more mechanical work than wood oriented.

Son and family arriving tomorrow. Might get in some sawing beforehand. Sunday, were trailering both Polaris' to a wilderness area for a day of riding/exploring. Monday is TBD. Might just unlax.

Away from the shop for about a week. Spent the day driving through the remnants of Harvey, not the best idea ever.

We love the mountains here in Colorado, however not on holiday weekends.  I-70 Is bumper to bumper both ways. Accidents are common. The Eisenhower tunnel is setting records and stay away if at all possible. I will have a small family BBQ and spend time in my shop.

A man has got to do..............what a man got to do:D

Ron, how large are these dice?  How large are the pips?  Have you already drilled/routed/carved the pips in?

It may be too late for this project but have you considered the use of vinyl or tape to cover the dice before drilling the pips?  I am thinking if I were doing even one set I would cover one face of the die with vinyl, drill the pips, tape a larger piece of plastic around the edge of the vinyl to act as a drape, spray paint the pips and move on to the next one.  While the vinyl would not be reusable, the outer plastic drape could be.  It might sound like it would be more time consuming as you would want the paint to dry before moving onto the next surface of the die - but how dog gone time consuming is it to paint those things by hand?  Doing multiples at a time would be a cinch.

I thought of your project as I watched a quick video of a guy doing a painted CNC sign.

Cal

Spent from Wed. night until Friday evening in Mary Rutan's Cardiac Ward......BP issues.

Today, I plan on going  to West Liberty, OH. for the Tractor Fest.......same as last year.....see IF I can walk the 2 miles of vendors this time around.......and see what tools I can find.....

Made it to the mountains last night and we brought our 11 year old granddaughter, her first time in the mountains. Hoping to see the bears this time. They have been playing in the yard everyday so I hope we don't disturb them.

No shop hop work for now but will be back mid week and getting busy. I left cutting boards in the clamps.

Going by the range here and shoot my new Glock 19 Gen5. It is so smooth.

Have a great Labor Day holiday weekend.

Cal, the dice are 3 1/2" cubed cut from a clear 4 x 4.  Your idea seems doable.  I have grand girls spending tomorrow night and they love to paint. Maybe some pip painting might be in their future.  I guess I could bring up Gladys Knight on the ole Spotify to paint by.

Wondered where you've been...hope things are OK and they got you stabilized and regulated.

Take care and don't over do at Tractor Fest, BUT always enjoy the pictures of your pilgrimage.:P

Beautiful time of year to be in Gatlinburg...gotta take her to Cades Cave & of course no trip is complete w/o at least one tour of the Roaring Forks Motor trail.:D

I hope it is a "bearable" :D trip for her.

When we did the Roaring Forks trail in July, I was stunned by how much fire damage there was on the trail.  Fortunately, none of the buildings were lost.
