A work in progress, side no. 2

Other WIP was getting a bit long-winded, so might as well do one about the other side of the dresser build.   First, a bit of glue up had to go on..

glued up.JPG

each panel was "popped out", a bead of glue run around on the rebates.    Panel back in, and nailed down.   I also trimmed the top of the corner posts flush with the top rail..

trimmed up.JPG

was going to handsaw this....decided the cordless saw was quicker....Set this mess aside, and clear the deck...

cleared off.JPG

The shiny end?   I ran a plane around, to level the top a bit, was getting a might beat up, lately.    Time to process six parts....

6 rails.JPG

Ok, they DO need a bit of work.    Found the shortest one, and marked the rest to match.   Hauled each around to the mitre box, and trimmed the ends, making sure I was cutting the worst end, of course.

Got these all nice and trimmed up..

trimmed.JPG

Lots of saw marks on the sides....some rails were thicker, or wider than the others..we have ways...

jack plane.JPG

I also set a combo square to the distance needed.  Wider ones were planed down to match the others, same with the thicker ones, finally got this stack done..

stacked up.JPG

I think I can live with that.   Crosscut a 2x4 into a pair of corner posts.....

corner posts.JPG

But they needed resawn down a bit.    Set up the jig on the bandsaw to cut for a width of 3" strong.  Leaves a little for the planes.   Ran into a problem or two...

Mitre Box was in the way.   Moved bandsaw a bit forward.     Blade stopped dead in it's tracks.....Had to tear things down, clean everything out.   Left the cover off, and started the saw...cool block was hanging up, moved it aside.   Lots of pine gunk on the saw blade.    Started the saw up, and use the end of a file to scrape the gunk off the blade.    Did not get near the teeth, though.   Put things back together, re-set the jig

two posts.JPG

Finally got both resawn down to 1" thick, by 3" wide.    And, of course, ONE had to start bowing....clamped the two together, hoping the bow will settle down.  Stash these aside for now..

stashed.JPG

As I needed the bench for other chores....

rail stack.JPG

I can get these all molded up....next time I go to the shop...to be continued...

I just love following along your porgress :)

Well, against my better judgement, I decided to at least try to get a bit done in the shop....on a Monday.    For once, nothing wound up being thrown against the nearest wall....progress, I guess.

Had those 6 rails to get done, meaning a lot of this sort of thing..

45 work.JPG

Except, this time around, a few things were changed.   Two cordless drills were used.  One to drill the pilot holes, the other to drive screws.   I still kept the countersink in the brace.  Started having trouble finding a spot without screw holes, so...

scrap.JPG

I added a scrap piece of pine.   Didn't matter where the screws went, now.   AS each rail was finished up with the 45, I took it around to the mitre box..

crosscut.JPG

At least from this side, I can see how far down to saw.  Wanted to leave enough for the tenon.....length was taken care of with a pencil line on the scrap decking...

gauge line.JPG

As long as each  rail's end just barely touched that line, all tenons will be the same.  Since all rails were the same length to begin with, made for a more consistant part.  I also used that resaw jig on the bandsaw..

jig.JPG

I could then stand the rail on it's side, with the waste area between the jig and the blade.   And remove the same amount on each tenon.  Finally, after two hours of almost work...

6 rails.JPG

All are within a 1/16" of each other, checked against the top rail of side #1 for fit.   Igor needs to clean the floors, though..

shavings.JPG

The Stanley 45 makes a LOT of shavings.   10 edges were molded.   Had to sweep the florr at least 3 times, before this shot.

Maybe tomorrow, I can work on the corner posts?   That should be even more fun...

Looking Great!

Just to let you know, @Grandpadave52, that I still have that bag of shavings. Just in case you're interested. ;) Free, just pay shipping. Or pick them up, and I'll throw in a free coffee!

I'm afraid if I ever left the States John, I wouldn't be allowed back unless it was via a barrel near Niagara. :ph34r: Although that free coffee offer makes it pretty tempting...

Don't worry, Dave... I can arrange it!

Ok, back to this story.   "plan" today was to get the corner post done......wound up doing a bit more than planned...

Jointer planes to joint and smooth the rough edges...

planes.JPG

22" long, Butcher ironed woodie, and a Stanley No.7c.....With the woodie, shavings fly straight up and onto my wrist.....with the Stanley...something else happens..

Moxxon TP.JPG

C. Schwarz calls this Moxxon TP, that roll by the knob is over 40" long.   Got both posts done, decided to get set up for some chisel work..

lay outs.JPG

I used the other side to locate where these rails will go, and then transferred lines across for both posts.   Used a rail to get the sizes just right (almost)

rail for lay-out.JPG

I also used a bevel gauge to mark out the angle for the feet.   bandsaw to cut ..

feet.JPG

One was just a hair longer, had to trim it a bit, later.   Got out some toys....

shop stool.JPG

Nothing like sitting down on the job.  Little shelf was a nice spot to rest a foot on...

tools 1.JPG

Along with that mallet Lew likes, and the 6" combo square.   Chisel to make a knife-wall for the saw to follow.   Then a whole lot of chisel work to remove the waste, had 12 "pockets" to dig out...

pine pockets.JPG

I went so far as to dig out the mitre gauge for the bandsaw, to 45 the rails where they met the posts...

coped joint.JPG

The spot on the post was done with the chisel.   Don't ya just love knots?   Not worried about the hole in the rail, have more to make...

ouch.JPG

Had a little set-back.   That chisel just barely touched that finger.....and made a Mell ofa Hess.    Got the bandaids on, and back to work  ( had already done a supper break)

assembly time.JPG

I went ahead and installed all the rails down one post, checking for square as I went, then switched things around, and started back up the other post.    I set the bottom rail first, and used the clamps to pull things into alignment.    18-7/16"  is the width of the side.  Drilled some holes with a cordless drill, but the rest of the job was via handtools...

hood toys.JPG

You can see the square to check things out.  The Yankee has a Phillips bit, the 6" sweep brace has a counter sink bit.  Bit of elmer's and 2 #8 screws per tenon....

screws.JPG

The "F" stands for "Front"  and the 4 is just a drawer number.    Got this mess all glued and screwed together...

completed frame.JPG

Was getting a might tuckered out, so decided to wait until tomorrow to do the plywood panels.   Second rail down had a little extra on it..

DNA.JPG

yeah, twas that kind of a day.   I need to install the [lywood panels, and cut a rebate along the back edges for the plywood back.  Sounds like I need to make a change over with the 45?

Once that is done, I can start building some web-frames..  Soooo, stay tuned...may have the case about built by the weekend?

Glad to know know fingers were lost in the making of this PIP...;)

Pretty good day all-in-all I'd say, well except for the finger mishap...:P

Tuned in for the next episode...make sure the safety kit is restocked...^_^

Very good job. I do so enjoy following along

other than that  rebate plane test this morning, not much on the schedule for today...

Rebates for the back are done..

45 rebate.JPG

So, maybe I can work on getting the plywood cut for Side #2?

plywood panel work.JPG

Hope I have enough to make those panels....bandsaw to cut, as no tablesaw is handy.   Need to cut each to size, and get them fitted, glued and nailed in place.   Hope to start the web-frames soon...

  • Author

Ok, final episode for "Side#2".....I went about cutting and fitting a plywood panel for each spot in the side.

nailed off.JPG

Cut each just a hair over-sized, then a block plane to fit each in place.    Glue went into the rebates around the edge, and then some nails were used to keep the panels in place

tools.JPG

Squares, a brad hammer, a block plane, needle nose pliers ( to save my fingers)and a pack of 5/8" long finish nails.  Side was clamped to the bench.   Finally got all the panels in place...

paneled up.JPG

But, I left the side on the bench for a while....needed to figure some measurements out....

plan.JPG

So I could cut the parts for the web-frames.   Needed to know how wide this dresser will be, too.   Finally cut a few parts

lay outs.JPG

Just to make sure.....need to hold the front edge of the frames back 3/4", to allow for the face frame parts.  Then set up a small mitre box ( GEM) and crosscut...and crosscut..

12 long parts ( front and backs), and 12 short parts, (ends).    Need to cut the kickers..sometime.

frame parts.JPG

Mortise & tenon to join the parts into frames, then add a kick using a couple screws.   End parts will get a pair of counter bored holes for screws, to attach the frames to the sides.

I could set Side #2  over, out of the way, for now..

side #2.JPG

So, that is it for Side #2.    next episode will be about web-frames.   Stay tuned

That is really starting to take shape! Great Work!
