Went to Lowe's in Toledo today looking for Carsiding. Didn't see any. Pushed the button for help.
A young guy showed up and asked him if they had any Carsiding. He looked at me as if I was crazy. I don't know if he thought I was looking for siding for a car or what.
I asked him if he knew what I meant. At least he admitted he didn't. So I took him over to the cedar that they had and showed him what it was but I didn't want cedar. He was just walking around as if he was in a daze looking for something he didn't even know what it was and didn't know if he had any. He didn't even ask anyone else if they had any. Just have to wonder why they employee people who don't know anything about lumber. I guess I have to go once in awhile to remind myself why I don't go to Lowe's.

So when I got to the truck I called Menards and asked them If they had any. Well at least he knew what I was talking about. Went to Menards and got my Carsiding.

I'm 73 yrs old and this is the first time I ever heard of lumber called car siding. So, he is not alone. What do you do with it?

So you going to get your car re-sided tomorrow now or wait for better weather? In the old days Earl Scheib used to do that for $99...

 

I'm like you....seldom go to a Lowes...I'll even go to HD before Lowes...We do have HD in our county so for small stuff or something needed quickly I'll go there otherwise Menard's is my first choice...have (3) to choose from all about the same distance and drive time.

Sometimes called "barn siding" or tongue & groove siding...I've always heard it referred to as "car siding" Maybe it's a Midwest thing, IDK...My dad always called it that too.

Edit add: Used to be able to get it in 6" or 8" width...not sure if you can anymore or not w/o a special mill order

Dave explained it well. 

Also you can use it to put on your walls, ceiling or whatever else you want.

I'm going to use it in a headboard and foot board that I'm building for the spare bedroom.

 

 

 

 

I have never heard of car siding either, but your lowes experience is very typical to what i get in my store here in S. Oregon

I'm not surprised by the reaction of the Lowes employee, and I have also found Menard's to always be a little more tuned into reality. True story I've told before: I went into an HD tool dept when Skippy Stockbot came up to me and asked if he could help find anything. I asked him if they had any biscuits. Smiling like I was nuts, he pointed toward the doors and said: there's a Burger King across the street, I think they have biscuits". I just walked away. So now I try to never ask anything when going into these stores, though the closest to me (Lowes) has one woman in the electrical area that really knows her stuff...I'm not afraid to ask here for help.

While I have also had my share of "deer in the headlights" looks, I have also been pleasantly surprised at both local Lowes and HD with folks who knew the electrical code, where & what stuff is, etc.  Sometimes I get this at Ace Hardware, sometimes not...

 

My preferred store for building supplies has a great staff of experienced and knowledgeable folks, but it is not a chain...

I wouldn't count on it...maybe car-siding is a generational thing? I'm 64 y/o and like Larry that's all I've ever heard it called (aside from secondary barn siding then tongue & groove siding).

Before the Big Box invasion, all of the little mom & pop hardware/lumber yards in our area advertised it as car siding or barn siding...some of the independent, specialty lumber yards still do.

and the original is a derivative from RR boxcar construction...

yep, hence the term "car" siding...that "siding" was at least full 5/4 or 6/4 to support the cargo which included cattle, horses and other live-stock.

I gave up trying to explain what I needed to borg employees. Now I take a cell phone picture. Even then, it can be a struggle.

Although, when it comes to some plumbing or electrical parts, my ignorance is largely to blame. 

I usually try to find an old guy to ask. They're more knowledgeable....and sympathetic.

Dave, I didn't say old-er than me. That would indeed be harder. And then, they'd be afflicted with CRS like me.

Must be a regional thing. I'm 57, have been in and around the building trades for most of my life, live in a Railroad town, and have a grandfather who was a railroader. I have never heard the term before.

Learn something new every day.

Out here in the west we call it T1-11. Seems to go over well no matter where it's mentioned.

I've never heard the term carsiding in this area. It must be a regional thing. This doesn't look like T1-11, which comes in 4'X6' ply sheets. Looks like tongue and groove board with a grove in the center of the board.
