This should do it unless you really nick up a cutter. I have had very good luck sharpening cutters this way.

January 1, 20179 yr Author The ole 55 is slowly going through it's cleaning...thought I would give a quick update... Firstly, I managed to take out the screws holding the spur/nicker (thanks, Steve) so life is good...teeny-weeny little suckers, though... I've been using soapy/oily/water mix and plastic/brass bristle brushes to clean out the nooks and crannies...working well... Question...it seems the body is made of brass...except as I continue the scrubbing it seems that it is only plated. Some other metal underneath...any ideas on what...? Reason being I don't want to clean it with anything too harsh or scrub so hard as to take the plating off...(if that's what it is). Any idea what I'm looking at from you 55 owners...? If you look at the link's image you can see what I'm describing on the front thimble check nut (part #33) Any clues on how I can Type this thing...? January 1, 20179 yr Popular Post What they did was plate the cast metal with copper, so the nickle plate would adhere better. Some of the bolts are also nickle plated brass.
January 1, 20179 yr Copper was used until the early 70's to fill microscopic voids in the steel, thereby making the chrome plating appear shinier as well as to provide better adhesion. This was easier (and faster) than trying to buff the steel part. As the price of copper rose, it was replaced with nickel. John

February 13, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Forgot to add a "before" pic...here it is...it's Feb 13 and finally finished with cleaning...see "after" pics... I worked at it a bit at a time and only used brass and plastic brushes...the bronzish coating was very fragile...no chemicals...soapy water at times... And a shot of my first rabbet with the newly cleaned 55... Unfortunately I now need to let my friend know it's done and get it back to him...still hoping he says "keep it"... ...yeah, right...
