The image(s) below is a MWTCA "What's It" image for you to research, and tell us all here in this topic post, just what the heck is it! The business end is placed around a seized nut (the bolt kind, not the squirrel kind) and a heavy hammer applies a blow to the 'U'-shaped part, causing the nut to (hopefully) be split by the wedge. Perhaps the nut is tightened down onto the offending nut, or item that needs to be cracked? Not a hammer blow, but the nut tightening would surely do the job. I have sent an e-mail to a local historian, and am awaiting a reply. John Should add, Downs was a major railroad center, so it's quite possible the tool was used for machinery maintenance. Ron Dudelston Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 Both are good answers but I'll have to tag along with Lew on this one. The older style crimps had an indention that ran parallel with the wire much like this would make. Though it could be a nut splitter, logic and mechanical leverage would think that the threads would be fine threaded, not coarse. Could be a hickory nut cracker for baby hickory nuts.
