We spend part of Sunday putting flowers and flags on some relatives (veterans) graves. A couple of weeks ago we had a fierce storm pass through and damaged a lot of tree in the cemeteries. The very old cemetery in Mercersburg PA was not spared. I picked up a piece of this tree that was shadowing Mimi's cousin's (Vietnam Vet) grave. Not sure what I have. Mercersburg is home to the Mercersburg Academy. Also, historians will recognize the area as the first shots fired in the Revolutionary War. Gives you an idea of the age of this cemetery. https://www.post-gazette.com/news/state/2011/02/05/Picketing-planned-to-save-historic-Mercersburg-house/stories/201102050292 Thanks in advance!

With all the recent ice storms our city lot is filled with branches and trunks. I stopped by today and picked up a few pieces, however I’m not real sure what I got and I’m horrible at Identifying without leaves. It’s very wet, seems soft, I did a quick turn on one smaller piece, it looks interesting. Any thoughts? Thanks

Did you know that certain hardwoods fluoresce under a blacklight? You can read all about it on the Wood Database site: FLUORESCENCE: A SECRET WEAPON IN WOOD IDENTIFICATION The other day, I cut a section off a log that had been cut down years ago. I knew it was black locust but it doesn't hurt to confirm. Sure enough, it glowed under the blacklight. Then I was walking around the shop with the blacklight, testing various woods. I was somewhat surprised when this elm blank fluoresced. I thought it is red elm. The article I posted says Wych Elm fluoresces, but that is a European species. So I'm unsure what type of elm it is or if other elms fluoresce as well. Interesting, anyway.

I saw a couple of guys cutting down a tree. I had to stop and ask if they were looking to get rid of some of it. They said somebody already claimed it and it wouldn't be good firewood. I told them I was a woodturner and tried to get a couple of pieces when I see people cutting down a tree. They gave me a couple. They said it was cottonwood. Looked like spalted maple to me. It is spalted. What do you all think.

I saw where somebody had a tree cut down in their front yard while driving around. I stopped to ask about it and was told to help myself. I grabbed three logs for now but will probably go back for more. The guy told me he thought it was maple. What does it look like to you all. Also I have a picture of a bowl I started to turn from it. I discovered I need a large bowl gouge and roughing gouge very bad for these larger bowls.

Hey @John Morris - some time back you said that you might be able to id the style of rocker this is. This was my grandmother's rocker. I have no idea where or how long ago she would have got it, likely in the 1930's or 40's maybe. Don't know if it was new when she got it. I do know for certain that it has rocked many babies asleep over the last 70 years! It is a pretty heavy duty solid piece of furniture. It has been painted a few times and the seat recovered several times over the last 50 years that I am aware of. What would this style of rocker be? I would like to see more items like this and really don't know where to start.

Does anybody have any idea what type of wood this is? It is a stump I took out in the front yard. Don't know how long ago the tree was cut down but it wasn't there when we moved in two years ago. Looks like it has some beautiful grain. I am going to make a couple of bowls when I get a bigger lathe.
