Came on this commission by chance. Went with my son to a card shop. He told the owner about my turning and the owner bought a bowl. On a later visit we discussed dice cups and trays. They do Dungeons and Dragons game days and he wanted cups for anniversary give aways . This evolved into discussion on selling dice boards which may go for 200 plus , yes look it up. Anyway he ordered 25 engraved cups and 8 boards with leather bottoms. So after maybe 3 months is done. Used several dyes and lacquer finish.

Have had these hollowed all summer and after I finished all the other gifts last week got these out to sand and finish. They are sweet gum and the sanding went rather rapidly. The dye is applied by wiping from center to edge and since there will be no crisp edge it can run over but you do want to leave a jagged edge and not try to make it even. Then repeat from the bottom. The collar is brown ebony and the finial Gabon ebony. Smaller one is about 8.5 in diameter and the larger right at 11.

Been thinking about using alcohol dye on some accent strips for boxes. The strips will likely be maple and about 1/8 to 1/2 wide and 1/2 to 5/8 thick. Will the dye penetrate deep enough to withstand sanding without removing the color? Will soaking result in deeper penetration and, do I really need a conditioner first? Thanks, guys.
