Our Patriot Turners-

@RustyFN posted his entry into his turning club's "chapter challenge" and man is it a beauty!

The intricacy of the brick work is absolutely amazing. Please check out Rusty's post for the comments left by our group!!

@smitty10101 asked a question concerning a tap for making wooden waste blocks. He received several comments and leads on where he might be able to find what he needs. Check out his post here-

For those Shopsmith turners, @Ozzie posted a tool rest modification in the Shopsmith forum. Ozzie used his 3D printer to create parts which made the Tool rest/banjo easier to adjust.

Ozzie explains more in thispost-

@timbertoes added a picture to our "What's On" post. Instead of a turning, he showed us the beginnings of his lathe dust collection setup. We are always looking for ways to improve on dust collection and appreciate any and all ideas!!

For The Newbies-

When a lot of us started turning, sources of information were pretty much limited to books, magazines and live assistance. Social media and video sharing platforms didn't do well on 300 baud dialup connections. One of the most difficult techniques, for me, was to understand what it meant to "ride the bevel". Tomislav recently posted a video, with extreme closeups of cutting action. If you are having difficulty , this video may help-

Tommy also uploaded a video showing how to safely prepare a set of dividers for marking a turning in preparation for a tenon/mortice.

How do you get good at turning? Practice, practice, practice! But, practice is more fun when it results in a useful end product. Check our Richard Raffan's video-

In Richard's video, he used a round branch for practice. Cutting any round object- log, dowl, etc.- on a bandsaw SAFELY requires some additional knowledge and holding devices. Woodcraft has an excellent presentation from Alex Snodgrass on the processes.

Expand Your Horizons-

You've just finished that "perfect" turned lidded box only to realize there was is a tiny flaw- the grain between the box and lid doesn't line up as well as you had hoped. Carl Jacobson has a method of embellishment that can help-

Another lidded box from Carl that doesn't require grain alignment to be awesome-

One of our long time members, @Gerald belongs to the Magnolia Woodturners Club. Recently they had the pleasure of having John Lucas demonstrate the processes involved with turning a 3-legged bowl. This is an excellently done video with great tips and anecdotes from John Lucas.

Nice article from Popular Woodworking and making a "Hearth Stool". The article is aimed at the general woodworking population but can easily adapted to being made on the lathe.

Metric ton to look at and read!!

For the more advanced turners I have a question from a friend who is just getting into turning.

When making a round turning, say a base plate of 3 inches final turned diameter. What might be good rule of thumb for diameter / square blank to start with?🤔

If the species is a hard wood like oak or walnut, I would leave myself about 1/4 to 3/8”. For soft wood like pine a little more to allow for tear out. Sharp tools will help reduce tear out

If I'm using pine, and I do use it, I cut it to +3/8" round on my bandsaw jig then turn smooth. Less tearout.

pre cutting to round is really a good idea regardless of the species. Saves time!

Just got a text as I asked him what wood. He is wanting to turn some white oak.

Don't ask why......

Nice wood to work with. Quite hard, steams bends great. Not as open pores as Red Oak. Makes great whiskey glasses
