Welp, after an afternoon of looking for a motor compatible and with a keyway, checking out reviews of various drill presses and taking measurements, I pulled the trigger on a 12” Vevor drill press.  All in, it was less than $300 and it will come off of the taxes for the company.  Reviews are a com in’.

Sorry I was late to the discussion but have you considered a WEN? IIRC, @Gunnybought one some time back. They get pretty good reviews. 3-1/8" spindle travel.

but did you consider bringing the motor to get it rebuilt at an electric motor repair facility?

Smitty, the drill press originally belonged to my FIL that passed in 2001 so it will be handed to my son.  It still works but I tend to use it as a production tool rather than a hobbyist so it should be fine in his shop without a motor repair.

Late as well, and with a really dumb question - have you tried a new belt on that DP before going to the motor? I've usually found the belt slips long before the motor stalls, but my DP is somewhat larger.

It isn’t belt related. Installed it while watching. Clearly there is a field issue within the motor.

I figured you knew what you were talking about with motors after the frame size discussion, but had to check!

I've rarely seen a winding fail on a motor, but I have seen it on the magnet of a mag drill. Chronic overheating softens the shellac on the windings, causing it to thin enough for leakage without a short. That's my theory anyway!

Either a bearing is going out or your bench needs lag bolts into the floor.

Withstanding the depth gage glitch it is doing the job intended. I was building hat racks this week and had to drill 132 35 mm holes in walnut and red oak and it didn’t miss a beat. I set the speed at 1100 rpm and the speed only dropped a few rpm going through the oak.

If the press itself is still tight and accurate, I’d try saving it first. Most of those old Craftsman 113 presses used a pretty standard 1/3 HP, ~1725 RPM motor, so sometimes you can swap in a modern NEMA-56 frame motor with similar specs and be back in business (mounting and pulley alignment are the main things to check).

I've got a Wen 12" benchtop and love it. 3.125" travel. Variable speed handle on the left make it easy to change chuck speeds. Digital speed readout on the face. Laser center X and light. Didn't think it was overpriced when I bought it more than 10 years ago. I replaced the height lock with a cam lever for quick and easy table adjustment. Shipping may cost more than the drill if you can't find one locally though. Looks like Home Depot carries them. A quick Google check says $218 at home depot.
