Drill Press Recommendations

Featured Replies

So, my inherited 10” Craftsman bench drill press is on the ropes.  The motor is losing power and wants to stall but the drill is good other than that.  I looked at replacing the motor (113.219100) but I can’t find a suitable replacement.  Buying a new one isn’t an issue but two things are critical.  Overall height and spindle travel.  The 10” fits nicely on my bench (not too tall) and has a full 3” spindle travel.  Unfortunately, many of the new one only have 2” of spindle travel.

With all of that do y’all have any suggestions with either a replacement motor or a new press?IMG_3923.jpeg

Hey Ron, been wanting to do this myself, the ShopSmith drill press function is pretty awesome, with the tilting table, basically you have an x,y,z, function built into the table, with it's variable speed function, and a pretty hardy power head, you could get a hold of an old shopsmith for a couple hundred bucks more or less and turn it into a wall mount, or? Just brainstorming here.

It would be a little bit of a project though, perhaps fun, but not as easy as pulling one out of the box and firing it up.

Great option but short of building on to the shop I don’t have the wall space.

Benchtop is a must then correct?

It has potential if the motor is stable.

Anybody looked at Vevor?  I can get a 12” for just under $300

That drill press looks suspiciously like my Bridgewood table top and is virtually the same as the Grizzly of that time. This is the motor on mine-

It doesn't look like the frame size of the motor is on the label and I couldn't find it in the owner's manual. If you knew the frame size finding a replacement would be easy...adn i agree Lew's motor (also without a frame size) might be a match. You could measure the motor (shaft size, footprint, and shaft height) and find it on a chart (maybe) then go from there.

I can only comment on Vevor as a company Ron, I've done a lot of looking and research on their website and watching videos of folks who have purchased from them. Most recently I purchased my blacksmith anvil from them and I was very happy, that particular anvil had excellent reviews from blacksmiths looking for a smaller side anvil. I was happy with it.

Vevor has mixed reviews on their machinery, so do your due diligence, Vevor is kind of like mid point Harbor Freight when they just started getting their feet under them, half good half bad. More than likely you'll find a few YouTube vids on that drill press you are looking at.

Speaking of Harbor Freight, have you looked at their Bauer series of machinery, it's getting pretty good reviews these days.

Therein lies the problem, Fred.  This is a 48 frame motor (1/2 hp) with a keyed shaft and a ball bearings. Most are sleeve bearings and 1/3rd hp.  I can buy a new press for about the same price as a motor.

I actually have thought about Bauer.  I’d love a Jet but at $750 I think they are overpriced.

Keep an eye on the images and match em up to that Jet compared to the lower cost DP's, it may be the same drill press just with a different paint job an lower price.

I got a Bauer 17" 2 or 3 months ago. I like it quite a lot. very good value, save for something used in good shape.
