December 23, 2025Dec 23 Author comment_367543 Can someone here tell me how the strips were painted(sprayed, brushed, applied with a rag) on this Folk Art Cat? I've got to detail the eyes, carve the mouse, and then finish sand everything before the painting can begin.. Report
December 23, 2025Dec 23 Popular Post comment_367547 I'm no finish expert nor have I ever played one on TV, but looking closely my guess the stripes were applied with an air brush feathering different colors for the shadows perhaps with "wet" artist brushes after airbrushing. Thinking back when Jesse aka Smallpatch was still with us, sure resembles his techniques. Edited December 23, 2025Dec 23 by Grandpadave52 Report
December 24, 2025Dec 24 comment_367552 Agree with @Grandpadave52 on the possibility of using an airbrush. Also, @Gerald does so of the layered coloring. Report
December 24, 2025Dec 24 Popular Post comment_367554 I would also say airbrush. As to feathered edges is probably something called blending. With alcohol based stains it is done with a light spray of alcohol. I have not tried this on a single color but have used it when two colors meet to soften and blend them together. Report
December 25, 2025Dec 25 Author Popular Post comment_367650 I wish everyone here a Happy Holiday and an even better New Year's. Here's an update on my cat carving. I always enjoy a little time in the shop, on Christmas Day, to listen to 'A Christmas Carol from Westminster Abby'. There's something about the solitude and listening to great singing at this time of the year. The eyes are almost completed, there's some balancing to do them before a light sanding. This afternoon, I'll start on cutting/shaping the ears on this beast. Then, a final overall sanding before I start on the mouse. https://www.westminster-abbey.org/worship-music/music/recordings/a-christmas-caroll Edited December 25, 2025Dec 25 by FrederickH Report

December 29, 2025Dec 29 Author Popular Post comment_367944 I've started finish sanding the carving, before the finishing can proceed. I'm not too pleased with the way that the ears turned out. The carving seemed to take on a life of its' own. I also have to carve the mouse to fit under the paw. Report

January 1Jan 1 Author comment_368128 The cat is almost finished and now I'm starting on the mouse-beneath-the-paw. I'm using mahogany because it's a harder wood and should withstand any breakage better. The white wood is screwed/glued to the bottom of the mouse to provide an attachment point for my carving vise.
