Popular Post steven newman Posted July 8 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 8 So...through dovetail joints at the Corners? Less work than 1/4" wide box joints? Will see how well the back does.. Film @2300 hrs...I hope.. Grandpadave52, Handfoolery, lew and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 8 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 8 Well, it IS 2300 hrs, somewhere, right? So..figured out the angle the lid for the Bread Box will be sitting at when closed up...laid that out on both of the side panels..and band sawed the lines.. I had to sort through both panels... To make sure the sections I was cutting off were the bad areas..I also had marked both as to "Inside"... I also figured out the bevel the Front of the case needs.. And marked that out, for now...might be fun to cut THAT bevel, AND dovetail the ends? Needed a few Lay Out Tools..laid out for use... Then did a bit of lay out...since I do Pins first... Then carried those lines down both faces, and marked where the waste was.. On these, I will try to "split the Lines". Time to get a saw out.. And make a few saw cuts... Then set up a way to chop out the waste with a chisel....when that is done...use the Pins to lay out the Tails by tracing around each Pin....the bandsaw out the waste, leaving the Tails in place...cutting on the waste side of the lines...clean things up a little bit...and try a dry fit of Corner #1.. When you NEED a Mallet AND a block of Hardwood to do a dry fit....things just MIGHT be just snug enough? Corner #1 is fitted out..only 3 more to do... Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman Posted July 9 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 9 Too hot hot outside..90 minutes in the shop...18 photos taken...Pare & Edit down to 14 photos.. So...Lay out another batch of pins.. then run a handsaw for a bit... Time to chop a bit, with a NEW Jig! Start with the show face first... Chop halfway down, leave a tab for support,,flip the board over.. Clean things out..use these to lay out the Tails... Bandsaw to cut out the waste, staying on the waste side of those line...Mallet and a block of wood to dry fit, again.. Checked for square..hand plane to level a few high spots... Reassemble the 3 parts.. So...what is next? Need to get these 3 parts fitted up...Front needs trimmed...and dovetailed to the sides. Top needs to sit in a groove, but..there needs to be a rebate milled along the edges of the Top...so that the Top sits flush with the tops of the sides...then figure out the bevels needed to install that fancy lid.. There IS a "Home Office" in the shop? Looks good to me... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, lew, Larry Buskirk and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 10 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 10 So..needed a couple bevel cut...we have ways.. Results? Decided to work on more dovetails...fun, fun.. Usual routine...saw a bit..chop a bunch..dry fit with a mallet... Last corner....layout out was a bit..different.. Hope nobody minds....but, all 4 corners have been dry fitted together.. Tomorrow, I will even the angle on the two sides a bit..and see about installing the Top... Then fit the lid... Stay tuned... 4DThinker, Grandpadave52, Gerald and 4 others 7 Quote
lew Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 Lookin’ like a mighty nice bread box! Grandpadave52, Larry Buskirk, steven newman and 1 other 3 1 Quote
steven newman Posted July 14 Author Report Posted July 14 Grooves have been plowed.. And fitted ...the sides get something like this.. Then a groove where the Top and the Back meet... Once all that was fitted out, then the glue and clamps arrived.. Let the clamps sit until this morning...then put them all away...Clamped the case into the vise.. And used a plane to level things out...( Millers Falls No. 8, OEM iron, to) Which meant going across end grain...like the top of a "Normal" box...plane to get everything the same level...because I needed to lay out where to trim the lid at.. Looking more like a "Salt Box" than a "Bread Box"? Stay tuned.. 4DThinker, lew, Harry Brink and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 15 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 15 Ok..lid has been trimmed to fit...will need planed here and there... Needed something for the lid to rest on when it was closed...so.. Angles did not need to be perfect...used a cut-off from the lid to set the depth.. So the lid will sit flush with the edge of the box... Then just a bead of glue, and a few clamps...sit this mess aside for now... Next item..was hinges...there was an issue with them.. They needed a slight bend..to wrap over the edge of the front...so.. Needed a Hinge Bender set up...and after a little adjustments with a hammer... Needs a little fine tuning, when I do the install... Waiting on glue and the floor to finish drying out.. Stay tuned.. What is with this server problem when it comes to down loading photos? steven newman Posted July 15 Author Report Posted July 15 Ok...got bored sitting around on the computer..so..as Norm Abram would say..."Time for a little assembly"? 3 edges of the Base panel were rounded over, with a Stanley No. 4-1/2 plane...Panel was then installed using just screws, no glue...then 4 "feet" were installed.. The door/lid works! Close it up.... Installed a handle, for when I need to open the lid... Tomorrow? Sand everything down...and then sand some more...to at least 220 grit.. Then maybe a coat of Witch's Brew? then sand to 320 grit, and brush on a coat or 2 of Warm Gloss Poly? See what happens, when I get bored? Stay tuned... lew, 4DThinker, Harry Brink and 1 other 4 Quote
lew Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Nice transformation on those hinges!!! Grandpadave52 and steven newman 1 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 17 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 17 Ok..sanded everything to 120 grit, then to 220 grit... Mixed a new batch of Witch's Brew ( 1 part Dark Walnut, 2 parts Gunstock) stirred well into a Quart can.. New brush,,old shop rag.. Side view..brush on, wipe off... Front view.. Yes, I even did the insides... And the back of the box, which will go against a wall... Letting this dry overnight, at least until the "stink" goes away..the the varnish can go on.. steven newman Posted July 17 Author Report Posted July 17 Next question...which of these tags do I install, and where at... And..before or after the varnish is done....these install with small brass screws..BTW... Hmmm.. Harry Brink, HARO50, lew and 1 other 4 Quote

I would put it on the lid between the hinges, but that's just me. Love how this one turned out. Looks like it's completely "mouse proof" HARO50, steven newman, Harry Brink and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Gerald Posted July 18 Report Posted July 18 I like the black on white and I agree with Lew's positioning . Looking good. One question Why have lid open to front instead of what I consider usual to open toward the back? steven newman, lew, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 3 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 18 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 18 Box will sit under an overhead cabinet, not enough room to lift the lid towards the back of the box.... This way, one can open the lid, set a loaf on the lid, get out how many slices one needs, place the loaf back inside, and close the lid..with zero chance of the lid slamming down on your hand... Stay tuned.. Gerald, Grandpadave52, lew and 2 others 3 2 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 18 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 18 So...got out a couple tools, and chucked a counter sink bit into a drill... Eggbeater is a Gooddell Pratt, with a 1/16" bit...screwdriver is a Phillips... Needed to drill 4 holes through a metal label, first,,,then countersink the holes...Eggbeater then drilled pilot holes for screws.. I even tried to "clock" the screws...came close... So..where did this label wind up at? Right where you can read it, when the lid is opened... BTW: the first coat of Warm Gloss Poly has brushed on... Just on the outside of the box..stay tuned..
