Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted May 30 Popular Post Report Posted May 30 I'm not sure. It looks like we'll have nice weather so maybe I'll finally get caught up on the yard stuff. In the shop I'm still putzing with my American Women quarter display frames. Grandpadave52, lew, Gordon and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post Gordon Posted May 30 Popular Post Report Posted May 30 No “shop” time for me this weekend. Today I’m cooking up some smoked chicken for a family gathering, then we’re packing up to go spend a couple weeks with our granddaughter in VA (or at least that’s the plan for now). Fred W. Popular Post kmealy Posted May 30 Popular Post Report Posted May 30 (edited) This, in the theater world, is known as "tech week." Saturday we have the last day of set construction (after 3 evenings this week, several last week and 11 Saturdays). The shop is full and there is still a lot to be done. Morning and most of the afternoon we do construction work. Then load up a rental truck. Sunday 9am - 9pm we move stuff into the theater (at a local high school), and start onsite assembly. The door to the shop is only roughly 6'x7' so the pieces can't be real big. Then every evening M-T, we're working there, in between actor rehearsals, lighting set up, microphone set up, costuming, rehearsing with the stage crew (high school kids). Dress rehearsal Thurs evening, shows Friday and Saturday evenings, Saturday and Sunday matinees. Then "the strike", everything gets taken apart in a few hours (after 12 weeks of build), and the parts loaded back onto the truck and taken back to the shop. A busy and exhausting week. Popular Post Grandpadave52 Posted May 30 Popular Post Report Posted May 30 Past week has been extremely busy and still trying to adjust to a couple new Rx's. Yesterday the weedeater led me around the property for a few hours trying to differentiate where the weeds end and the yard begins. More of the same today to be followed by mowing an extremely over grown property which likely will continue until snowfall. Church Sunday. Nothing fun planned in the shop. I wish we would simplify the sets a bit. This one has about 50' of 14' high walls, two side walls at 30 degree angles, with two layers, one of "wallpaper" and one of black and white stripes. Two doors. A 2' high platform inside, and then a 7' platform inside, the larger one with two sets of steps and a fireplace. Then there is a 7' platform with a set of steps up, and another (13 steps) down the back and of course, handrails all around. There is a 2 piece "roof scene" with a tilted roof, satellite dish, and a window, with faux shingles and siding all around. A separate "attic scene with a 12' wall, one door and one hidden door. 4 mausoleums that later convert to a TSA station, then add a passenger screen and luggage screen. A coffin in a platform with grass base and railing around. There's two or three other sets of steps and they'll be on a wall and need to have a landing platform. A dining table repurposed from a picnic table from the last show. A rolling couch. A streetlight with remote power supply. Several lamps with remote switches. A set of covers over the orchestra pit with a trap door. And a "sandworm" crafted from a 4x4x6 piece of styrofoam with jaws and teeth that move. And a separate door only used for a few people to go thru at the beginning of act 2. steven newman, Grandpadave52, lew and 4 others 4 3 Quote

Popular Post JWD Posted June 1 Popular Post Report Posted June 1 I've been working at work this weekend and the one past. Telescope is broken and it's really been a hassle to get it going again. Popular Post StaticLV2 Posted June 1 Popular Post Report Posted June 1 Been busy with work and life lately and haven’t had a lot of time to spend in the shop. @Masonsailor Dropped by last weekend with one of our friends and we got to teach a class on sharpening chisels on a Tormek which was fun, then I turned him loose to do the rest of them. I have been working on developing my skills with Kumiko patterns and panels which has been a great learning experience. If you have challenges with scraps like I do, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Currently I need to make 2 more rectangular panels for a lantern I am working on. Other than that, this weekend has been chores, work, and a little bit of shop time. Forecast is for more of the same tomorrow. Fred W. Hargis Jr, Larry Buskirk, Grandpadave52 and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post StaticLV2 Posted June 2 Popular Post Report Posted June 2 Gradually getting better at this whole Kumiko thing and learning the importance of insane levels of precision… and sharp chisels… No, sharper than that…. Much sharper. One and a Half panels left to finish up for a lantern I am making for my wife. I am working on a sled design for diamond and hexagon patterns frames as well. I can see incorporating these into larger pieces as either accent or decoration and I have been toying with blending some of the shoji designs with classic furniture styles. steven newman, Harry Brink, lew and 8 others 9 2 Quote
Popular Post JWD Posted June 2 Popular Post Report Posted June 2 That's looking really good! I would show my girlfriend your work (she's Japanese American) but she would then want me to start doing the same! Come to think of it, all one has to do is look at the floor of my shop to see that I could never do that level of work! steven newman, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Gerald and 4 others 2 5 Quote
