Popular Post Larry Buskirk Posted May 2 Popular Post Report Posted May 2 Been such a busy week I almost forgot it's Friday. Other than getting the mowers going, moving plants and wood piles I haven't been up too much. What's on Your Weekend Agenda? Grandpadave52, DuckSoup, lew and 4 others 5 2 Quote
Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted May 2 Popular Post Report Posted May 2 I had planned on getting the vegetable garden planted, but at the moment it's a bit too wet to till, and it will get more wet over the weekend. So I'll be in the shop trying to convert my lumber storage from horizontal to vertical. May do some more work on the "Famous Women" quarters display pieces I'm trying to make. Popular Post Grandpadave52 Posted May 2 Popular Post Report Posted May 2 List of domestic duties to accomplish today. Soccer match tomorrow morning weather permitting. Church services Sunday. During my downtime, plenty of yard sticks to collect...those shed by trees, not the 3 foot kind. The yard really, really needs mowed but still waiting on the April showers to bring May flowers but not the one loaded with pilgrams unless they collect yard sticks. Donut have the open center, circular cake like, coffee swabs either. After this short paragraph, I'll let myself out. DuckSoup, Zack, Larry Buskirk and 5 others 8 Quote

I'll trade any of those sticks for the 3 1/2 ft diameter chunks I've been trying to move. Got part of yard mowed Thursday before the moved in yesterday. Think I'll have one of those open center, circular cake like swabs with a cup of coffee when I'm done here. Gerald, Grandpadave52, Al B and 4 others 2 5 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted May 2 Popular Post Report Posted May 2 Working on getting my stuff ready for an event tomorrow. Made new signs this morning. Have to brand a couple items and then pack truck so I can setup tonight. This is a new event an I hope it goes well. Still burning stuff I am getting rid of in shop. Hopefully have loan on house and permits for construction ready next week so building can proceed. @Fred W. Hargis Jr what is the significance of vertical vs horizontal? I always thought lumber would bow over time vertically. Al B, DuckSoup, steven newman and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted May 2 Popular Post Report Posted May 2 (edited) It might, you need to keep it supported and almost 90° up/down. I intend to put in some racking for the support. Here's a pic of the racks I have, these are 2" square steel tube (bought like this from another woodworker 15 years ago). They work well, and that span is 8', but the height is 8' as well. As I age getting the boards from the top is becoming more of a chore; in fact I hit myself in the face with one getting them down for this remodel. I have to use a ladder to get those top boards, plus the headache of searching through a horizontal stack of wood for a certain board(s) is no fun. Having them vertical will allow more quick selection as well as a better inventory of what's in there. My shop has 10' ceilings so I can stand them up easily enough. I'm aware of the concern of the bowing, but I think If I keep them from supported and lean them only slightly I'll make do. This is my stash and while some of those boards are 11' - 12' long I'll get them all in there and save some space as well. I will have to cut some of them down. Anyway, all in all, for me this will be better even if I have a few boards bow. Edited May 2 by Fred W. Hargis Jr Grandpadave52, Larry Buskirk, steven newman and 4 others 7 Quote

Man, I hear ya on getting boards off the top rack! I haven't dropped one on my head yet, but I only keep the light stuff up there for that very reason! Popular Post JWD Posted May 3 Popular Post Report Posted May 3 I drove down to El Paso yesterday to pick up an ebay bandsaw. Didn't need it of course, but it was too tempting to pass up. Its a 1970's Powermatic 143 - the 14" model that has step pulleys and a hi-lo gearbox. Going to mostly run it as a wood saw, but the low speeds are nice to have for aluminum and steel when needed. I like the full cast iron back frames on these saws, stiff as it gets and usually they track perfectly. Going to spend the weekend cleaning it up, making a missing part for it, and welding up some blades for wood. Might get it moved down to the shop, but I also might wait until I've made a proper mobile base for it. I sure miss the shop at the day job up to 2015, it was a remote site and my job required being there for 7 12 hour shifts with housing on site. After my shift, I would make what I needed in the shop, like mobile bases for my machines. I have a welder these days, but I don't keep it set up so I have to make space for welding chores. We finally got a bit of the rain that I always hear about from you guys It has been one dry spring out here, so it's nice to start off May with a little moisture! Grandpadave52, Fred W. Popular Post JWD Posted May 3 Popular Post Report Posted May 3 Ouch! Are you sure you just weren't in the wrong bar at the wrong time? That happened to me and the ex once in El Paso, but fortunately it was the right time (Wednesday at lunch). She'd looked at the menu on her phone and said "lets go here" and didn't recognize that it was a biker bar when we showed up. I kinda figured it out as we were walking in, but we had been arguing that morning so I didn't want to get into another one. We ended up having some decent tacos and a really good story out of it. My mood improved too, I thought it was really funny! steven newman, lew, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 7 others 10 Quote

One of these days I'm going to get into trouble with these Cherry picker on the trailer worked because it's cheep and the casters hardly roll - so the lip of the deck was enough to keep it from puling off even with the base of a 600 lb machine hooked over the edge. Then a couple sleepers for it to slide down as I lowered and just needed to get it tipping the right way on touchdown. Once off the trailer I re-rigged everything with a short strap so I could pick it all the way up with the cherry picker and set it on a temporary wheeled base. Larry Buskirk, lew, Fred W.
