I still have snow on the ground, and the temps aren't that great. The photos you see here were taken from video footage during the build process, which was in progress when I began this thread and has been finished now for a bit. I was delaying posting them all at once, trying to hold on until I could complete the project. But weather had other plans.

I still need to take a plane and smooth everything out, and do some shaping and rounding of corners and edges.

I'm debating whether I need to put a back on it or not. Not certain yet. As for finish, that will have to wait for a more suitable time. It will serve "in the white" until then.

Until I get a break in the weather that will allow it, this project is on hold. We are supposed to drop into a deep freeze Monday, with a forecast 1 degree that night.Burrrrrr.

So, 38 degrees today, but still snow on the ground. Ok, fine then.

Time to begin the smoothing operation for this project.

 

 

 

I use my hands a lot to check for low/high spots. Works better than my old-ish eyes.

 

 

Dealing with knots sometimes requires I pull, not push.

 

After smoothing I'll use the plane to round the corners and the face of the bookcase.

 

 

 

 

Then it's on to sanding.

 

 

I'll finalize the roundovers with sandpaper.

 

 

Messy. Not a fan, but it is necessary.

 

 

This is a freestanding unit, so feet are a requirement.

 

 

This was a fun project, and I needed it.

I can't put a finish on right now. Come Spring I'll hit the surfaces with some sandpaper to bring up a bit of fresh wood, and lay on a finish. Until then it will serve in the white.

I'll leave you with a parting shot. I'm satisfied with the results.

I'm thinking of pulling frames from those videos and creating a thread here on that build, if there is interest. There are quite a few videos I could pull from, come to think of it.

As for the snow, it's a fact of life in the winter around here, sometimes. It's the extreme cold, especially with wind, that stops me. I was about to go craycray, as the younger folk say. LOL

Really glad we got a break so i could get out back and shove a plane across wood.

Gramps is good. I hadn't been away from home since last Sunday until driving into church this morning. I was really surprised how much snow remains in some of the fields. Coldest January for us in 11 years; 14th coldest overall. I know what you mean about getting stir crazy. 40 years ago, I'd be out all day in the woods or tending to livestock. Now, just the trek to/from the mailbox is dreadful from November to May.
