That's one idea I pondered.  I do have a sewing machine.  For this first try prototype I went ahead and finished all the parts/straps to assemble it.  Should I make another or use straps in another project I've ordered strap slides and d-rings.  I can embed the round end of a d-ring and pin it in place to leave the straight side up for the strap to wrap around.  Then the return end sewn to the center of a slide.  Studied what camera bags I have to see how their straps were adjusted in length. I also discovered if I pushed the strap through a slot, folded it over then back through the same slot, when pulled down to the fold it wouldn't pull through.

All straps taught.  Top held horizontal with no deflection in any direction.  Found I can simply spin the top around the post to tighten or loosen it independently from the base.   Twist the post to loosen or tighten both the top and base at the same time.  Loose enough for the post to come out of the end sockets all the parts lay down  and would take up much less room when moving or shipping that way. 

 

Learned much about threads in wood.  I've seen no breakage of the threads on the post or in the hub nuts.   I  remember a few times when I taught that being able to thread project parts together would have been a good solution to their design.

Very unique. Great craftsman. It's really going to pop with the finish applied.

Pondering it I imagined running the straps from the top to the bottom rather than all the complexity of the threaded post and hub nuts and twice the strap connections used.  A simpler post with no threads yet possibly a more interesting turned profile.  That would eliminate the structural value of triangulating between base and post then post to top in exchange for a non stable parallelogram structure that could be easily toppled. Most tensegrity projects you can find on youtube suffer from that parallelogram flaw. Stable for a moment, but easily toppled with a side push.
