Are you cutting each part individually or is it precut as in a kit? Looks tedious waiting for glue to dry.

Parts are laser cut. I remove them from the sheet with an X-acto knife. Yep it's a stop and go process, but I'm famous for having multiple projects goin.....so I just work on something else when I've got fresh glue sittin.

Looking more like a boat. Framework cut off and considering a rustic shelf to set it on when complete, the specifics are still in play. Wood for shelf found at my favorite supplier :D

Side note: Of my hammer selection my Collins Legitimus is my favorite to clean nails out :CowboyPistol:

Great progress Aaron!

Coincidentally I've been looking at wooden boat building, in my retirement I may have to build a daysailor and a few row boats, life size! :)

For now I was looking at the models, did you get that one from Chesapeake Light Craft?

Thanks for keeping us up to date!

Thank you, and I got in online, I don't remember where. It is the Model Shipways brand in 1:24 scale. Commonly recommended for 1st time builds by the more experienced crowd.

Thanks Aaron, I got back to your original post and saw the box, I can track it down I think. I really like that Dory style, specially for a full scale build, been watching videos and reading up on building those Dory's and they look pretty fun and straight forward, we can row it , or hang a motor off the back. Plus they just look cool with the sweeping profile. Look forward to your final post on this one!

It's interesting you have your eye on that Dory. I was looking at several different models to try for my first one and then I ran across the Dory and thought yep that's it. I like the lines and there is a ton of history with the design. I have quite a few technical issues with the build but it is the first one I've done. One of the hardest things for me to get around was the lingo. It's straight up a different language heading down that rabbit hole, more than any other thing I've been around. That's alright though, it's upped my jeopardy scores.

I've used the directions that came with the model which are nice but as with anything you-tube is helpful. Other than that one of the greatest resources for all things scale model ships is the Forum - Model Ship World, which is owned by the Nautical Research Guild. There is mountains of material available at the search button and helpful folks there ready to answer questions same as here. I've posted the link in the Links Directory. Another site you may find interesting is the -Lowells Boat Shop. It's a living history museum still producing Dorys to this day and I added the link to our directory as well under Museums.

Glued up my little shelf last night,we'll see how it turned out shortly. Flipped it upside down for the glue so the pieces would meet more flush on the show side. I'm getting down to some details that are much less represented in the directions on the Dory. I got back in the "Dory Book" yesterday evening. Boss man @John Morris if you decide to do anything with a Dory whether it be full size or scale I highly recommend the book previously shown in this thread. It is over 250 pages of detailed exploded drawings, instructions, plans. etc. They shoulda called it the Dory Bible. I actually did myself a large disservice by having the resource and not using it directly to cross check with the directions as I have built the model from step 1. Looking back that would have been the no brainer way to go. To get my skills a notch up my plan has been to do another one when this one is complete so that will be the plan. It is also illustrated in a pen and ink/sketch type manner which I thoroughly enjoy. It's very akin to Eric Sloane style.

Thanks Aaron! Man we are full of coincidences you and I. I just happed to shoot an email to Wooden Boat and asked them literally, if there is a Bible of boat building, what would you recommend? I did not hone in on the Dory in my question so the list they shot back at me did not contain the Dory book, but now that Dory book is at the top of my list based on your thoughts.

Here is what Wooden Boat shot back to me:

Yeah Boss, that's a coincidence for sure. Either that or we have similar symptoms and probably the same disease  That being said the boat building venture would be a worthy project to bite into. If I had a full size/garage shop I'd consider it myself but that is a little out of my space availability for the size item it is. Along with these little workhorse fishing vessels I have looked at various canoe designs also. All are very intricated and craftsman oriented imo. One other thing about the full-size build. For me it would bring a unique focus to the project. I mean if you don't get it right you could get wet :CowboyPistol: :OldManSmiley:

I visited the site you've linked there. They seem to have a large selection of nautical books. I'll check those out later tonight

Been moving along here and there since cooler weather has set in and yard work has slowed down. Currently the gunwales are dampened and clamped. I'll do final sizing and glue next week. I've had a couple of misfires on the false stem but hopefully will get it lined out next week as well.
