November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post Good Monday morning! Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks! Welcome new members To view our newest members and welcome them to our digs, please see our Members Page, you can "Sort" by join date and click on their names and be taken to their profile page where you can leave a message of welcome. Thank you for making our newest folks feel welcome. Return to the World I'd like to thank @Ron Dudelston and @lew for all their work behind the scenes while I was absent, and our Forum Hosts for keeping their forums lively and updated. And last but not least, I'd like to thank the gents who kept the Monday topic up and live, thank you!!! I had strict doctors orders to unplug from the world for a month and focus on my own health, that meant no work, no online activity, R&R, and time away from it all. In other words I danged near lost my mind and had to take a break! Thanks again to everyone, especially our members who keep coming back and make this forum what it is today. Featured Topic @kmealy and the team doing the work of angels, volunteers and philanthropists, great job guys! Featured Link Featured Gallery Image @calabrese55 showing of his new segmented bowl talents! Featured Video How to build a pre-industrial table, this trailer shows a little bit of what's in the entire class episode, I have the dvd that I purchased when they first came out by the fine folks at Mortise and Tenon Magazine, I watched the entire video over two hours long and I learned much just by watching, and I have not even built the table yet. I highly recommend this class if you want to learn to build just like a shop would in the pre-industrial era. November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post @John Morris, thanks for another informative Monday post. My weekend saw several more wheeled toys painted and assembled. This has been a learning process. Quite frustrating at times, too. The 3 sizes of wheels I bought were supposed to have 1/4" axle holes to accept a 1/4" dowel. None of the holes were properly sized. All were less than 1/4. They all had to be drilled out. Around 60 wheels. Then, the painting. I'm using Krylon spray cans on poplar. Good paint but my technique sucks big time. I should've hit them all with a coat of shellac as a primer first. I didn't. Consequently it took sometimes as many as 3 coats to cover the grain. A lot of time wasted. A lot of toy makers use brushed on acrylic paints, forgoing the spray cans. I reasoned that spraying would be faster as several could be painted at one time. Not unusually, my reasoning was faulty. But, this batch is done. Just a few more to install the wheels on. I'll finish up today. Then it's on to scrolling Christmas ornaments. Right now, I'm looking at about 3 dozen total ornaments cut from 1/8" BB. You can bet your @ss they'll be hit with shellac before the colors are applied. Live and learn, I guess. November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post Worked on a small display case for my grandson. I'm at the worst spot, sanding and finishing. Got the sanding done.
November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post Raised a 24' vertical antenna attached to the gable end of the house. Getting a lot of RF feedback on TX making it mostly unusable. Still needs work. Working the J.O.B. this week. ~9 months to retirement. .40
November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post @John Morris glad you listened to the doctors! Finished up a shallow center piece bowl for a friend. Still need to engrave the bottom. Relatives left on Sunday.
November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post @John Morris I didn't read far enough before responding, earlier. Stunned to read about your recent health issues. Glad you retained enough of your mind to see the medicos and take their advice.
November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post Great to have you back with us again @John Morris and thankful to hear life challenges are improving. We are blessed to have the high level of talent daily on TPW which makes it the "greatest show on earth." Of course an endless supply of donuts in the breakroom doesn't hurt either. Glad you're back!
November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post due to pick up an old desk wednesday and take it back for some TLC. drop down writing surface needs some help with missing veneer. not a valuable antique, so plan to remove old veneer and put on new.
November 27, 20232 yr Popular Post Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and are near the end of edible leftovers. Friday was supposed to be an R&R day...furnace(bolier) decided to act funky late in the afternoon so, pulled the burners (4) to clean and change the thermo-couple. I try to keep a couple on hand; don't remember the last time I changed it, let alone a thorough clean of burners. Wasn't a bad job IIRC when I was 45-50 y/o, still could see w/o bifocals and had flexibility before the back issues. Anyways, 4 hours later, pilot would not stay lit. Wrong thermo-couple??? Fast forward to Saturday PM; much easier and faster this time even working between Michigan scoring and defensive drives. Of the two thermocouples, I must have installed one for the water heater (fixed placement) versus adjustable positioning. Anyways, pilot remains lit, perfect blue burner flames, quiet burner ignite, nice, cozy warm house. Also, did a vehicle inspection of granddaughters Trailblazer before she returned to campus Sunday. Sunday, besides regular church responsibilities, it was our week to provide biscuits+gravy for breakfast prior to Sunday School. Mrs. added a large fruit salad too. After church, quick lunch, trip to O'Reilly's, back home, change of clothes, load up granddaughter, she followed us to Boilertown. Youngest grandson had mid-season travel league basketball tourney; location on her way back to campus. IDK what happened for sure; it was snowing pretty hard at the time; pavement wet but not freezing; transition from West Lafayette crossing the river into downtown Lafayette there is a double, round-a-bout. She was right behind me as I entered the second and started across the bridge; looked in the mirror to see her sliding across into green space into a guard rail. By the time I got across the bridge, through downtown and back across the bridge to the round-a-bout she was gone. Car phone rang, she's blubbering through tears parked by the courthouse downtown. Anyways, got back to her, she's really shaken up; grandma got her calmed down; I inspected her car; a few minor scratches on the front bumper, but nothing serious. Grandma offered to drive her to game site so she could settle down, but she said no. I showed her again how to turn switch from 2WD to AWD. On to the game site, we turned, she headed on back to campus. Learning experience for her. Positive note, she purchased gas for $2.95/gal near the campus. Oh yeah, grandsons team won the tournament too. Mrs. & I went on a pizza date afterwards. I'm enjoying wave 2 of coffee now and finally my post Thanksgiving R&R; domestic duties later. Trip to Boilertown tomorrow for haircut, errands to Rural King and Menards after. Oldest grandson has two, home basketball games this week. Garage closed when temperatures are below 50° and even more so below 30°. Edited November 27, 20232 yr by Grandpadave52

Thank-you Gene. Busier than I planned for sure. Fortunate on her accident; could have been far worse considering the situation. She has a strong fear of round-a-bouts she needs to overcome though. She generally is a very safe, consciousness driver. This is the 4th year grandsons team has basically been together. Same 8 kids last two years. They've only lost once so far this year; a travel team from the Indy area. Edited November 27, 20232 yr by Grandpadave52
November 28, 20232 yr Popular Post Gene Howe; I've had the same problems with the 1/4" dowels that I use. It's a tight fit, that's for sure. I'll cut the dowels a little longer than needed and put them in the microwave to dry the out. That usually works. (15 to 30) seconds. Another thing to try is to keep them in a warm spot in the house to get any moisture out. Harry

November 28, 20232 yr Popular Post @John Morris Good to have you back, now you have to work twice as hard to get some of the geezers back to a peppy step. Got 50 tops turned for this weeks show. Half of the Christmas boxes are finished with lacquer but need a buff. Got the jewels put into top handles today and started turning the tenon off the rest of the boxes so I can decorate the bottoms.
