  • Here's the start of my carving project. This will have to worked on during rainy/cold weather. The backside has already been carved for relief of the lower shell-lobes and now the front can be done.

Project completed, except for finding a place on the wall for it. Onto the next carving from Southern Italy!

  • Neat!  You have to wonder who was buried under that skull!

I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around carving the C-scrolls but I'll get there.

No doubt from here but that you will get it figured out. :)

My carving is coming along but I'm not pleased with the way the basswood is leaving "whiskers" from my carving. Even scraping the wood does not remove these whiskers. Would using a propane torch, very carefully, burn these away. I'm also thinking that displaying this shell upside down is the better of the two ways to display it when done???? Happy Holidays to everyone!

My carving of the Reggio shell is almost complete. I need to do a little more touch-up on the carving. Now onto the gilding/painting/plaque portion of this project.

Lookin' fantastic, Rick!

Looks awesome Rick. I wasn't so sure about changing the orientation until I see the carving finished. You've made a believer out of me.

Your attention to the details is amazing.

I decided to make a rectangular plaque and see how it would look. I'm turning a circular plaque tomorrow to see how that would look. Whichever on that I choose, I'll be able to use the other plaque for my next carving project. Which orientation looks best???L1070851.JPG.a8ac174acc9b82c5caa882b07cf665bc.JPG

Have to agree with @lew, the top one; anyway with the rectangle plaque.

I also agree with Lew on the first one. It seems to point to the heavens.

I like the first orientation best myself.

That said, being the odd duck that I am - I might use two hangers on it so that it could be hung in either orientation.  I would make a point to tell visitors that it was hung to point towards the clouds.  Then in a couple months I would turn it around to see if anyone notices ;)  But that's just me... :D

Cal, that's exactly what my plans are!

Circular plaque turned and now to compare the rectangular vs. circular look. Opinions welcomed!

I really like the symmetry of the round plaque. My vote still is for the top view of this set.

I'm for the top view, although I'm waiting for left and right rotations just to make sure.  ;)
