June 30, 20232 yr Hey everyone…back to finish up the coffee table for my wife and build two end table of canary wood for my daughter. I am going to try Rubio monocoat for all three pcs. I can not find denatured alcohol anywhere near me to wipe things down before applying the Rubios. Will Mineral spirits work as a good substitute? thanks
June 30, 20232 yr I got some from Lowe’s. Mineral spirits would probably work but take longer to dry. Not sure if it leaves a residue
June 30, 20232 yr Asking, not suggesting, would Acetone work? It dries pretty quickly. I just picked up a gallon of DA from out local Menards. You might check your local farm supply stores e.g. Tractor Supply, Farm & Fleet, etc. Also might check a local Sherwin-Williams store.

Maybe someone on here may know. Good ideas above. Thanks. I love Menards but we do not have any near me.

I use it to follow up cleaning up residue and unremoved finishes after stripping. What are you trying to do with "wipe down" and what, if anything is on there now? As an aside, naphtha works similarly to mineral spirits but dries much faster. Camping/outdoor stores may carry denatured alcohol as a fuel (but not the fuel that goes in Coleman lanterns) Edited June 30, 20232 yr by kmealy

I think he was asking about using to wipe down the surface prior to applying the finish. I use Acetone in that fashion often cleaning metal surfaces prior to spraying paint. Never had any issues doing so.
June 30, 20232 yr I vaguely remember that disinfectant wipes might have alcohol as the sterilizing solvent. That or look for rubbing alcohol. If neither proves out you can blame it on all the solvents that I my have inhaled over the last 48 years or so. Edited June 30, 20232 yr by 4DThinker
June 30, 20232 yr During the height of the pandemic I need some DNA. The liquor store had grain alcohol- problem solved but a little pricey.

July 1, 20232 yr Mineral spirits is what I use all the time to wipe wood before finish to remove any sanding dust. Danl

Camping/outdoor stores may carry denatured alcohol as a fuel (but not the fuel that goes in Coleman lanterns) The only place that had DNA was the Tractor Supply. They were out but they did have naphtha. I am getting read to finish a coffee table and just wanted to be sure it was good and clean, thus the DNA. The naphtha worked great though. I am finishing with Rubio and it is my first time using it. Just wanted things good and prepped. Last week the wife 'asked' me to make a couple of night stands for the daughter so I am going to use the same finish and prep. That though is gong to be Canary. Thank you for the insight on the Acetone. I will store that in my memory banks (what's left of them at least)

I do not think it has water in it because I have not had the grain raised from using it. Any time I use it it dries fast. I have never used DA for wiping, but I use it with dye and shellac. Danl
July 1, 20232 yr Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol has way too much water in it to use with shellac. Grain Alcohol or DNA are the only options I know to be effective.
July 1, 20232 yr Mineral spirits is a petroleum distillate, if it had water in it it would all be in the bottom of the can. I always use it to wipe the sanding dust off as well as check for any hidden glue spots. That said, I've never used Rubio and it may effect how that finish turns turns out. I'm curious why there isn't any DNA available....I hope that doesn't turn out to be the next thing in short supply. Edited July 1, 20232 yr by Fred W. Hargis Jr
