I purchased 3/4" cedar, not the usual 1/2" or 5/8". There really is a noticeable difference in the strength of 3/4" cedar or redwood fencing. The difference in price is negligible really. Under the white tarp are the pressure treated 2x4's for the cross members. Wife and son are taking off to her home country of Panama, for three weeks leaving me and my oldest daughter to fend for ourselves. Hey, I might get something done now! That's what, $10,000 of wood?

Mama want's it stained, that's going to be the most time consuming part of it. My thoughts are I can install the fencing, then stain? I don't feel it's necessary to stain the back side of the boards since they are not viewable, the back will be facing our neighbors backside fencing using the same fence posts I share with our neighbor. What do you think? Do I need to stain both sides for longevity? We are dry out here, it is So Cal. Just my take John. If you are planning to stain only one side you can save a lot of time by laying out the boards flat and staining them using a roller before putting them up. You may want to lay out some cheap tarp to set them on for staining. I built a cedar elevated planter for my daughter 2 years ago and never stained it. Still looks almost new here in a coastal town. May 7, 20224 yr Popular Post Working on a monitor riser to match the laptop stand I did last week. Got the red oak all dimensioned and glued up today. Cutout and assembly tomorrow, and hopefully sand and finish on Sunday.
May 7, 20224 yr Popular Post So, yesterday's "strong storms" were a total bust... a few sprinkles. Did get some wind. We really could use a good rain. I finished up, I thought, the rehab on the Chevy truck. After washing all the glass and installing the tonneau cover I was looking over the receipts for the various parts I've put on it. There was the inspection report done when I had the oil changed. Clear as day - brakes needed Ok, so I spent a bit of time looking on line and have ordered the parts from Rock Auto, should be here next week. So, I thought I was going to roll this truck out and reclaim my shop for a few days... no such luck. While I did mumble a few choice words, I've only myself to blame for not having seen it earlier. But today the sun shines, it's cooler, and I am off to a car show
May 7, 20224 yr Popular Post Blick has a 50% off sale on prints, etc. Will order one of Cat, one of sis's kids, for future picture frame making. High quality printing on archival papers. Maybe even spring for 'Museum Glass" with 99% UV protection and no glare. Pace myself through this hoagie. With pickles on the side, chips, and soda, do not want to be too bloated to make it from the kitchen table to the couch. Considering how I'll likely start with 1/4 lb of egg salad on white open-face Patched a hole on this cutoff strip of beam exterior . . . The inside of the patch planed and scraped up well enough, but with 100 grit, it blended up amazingly (oops, pic to come) . . . Making another box for auntie in Williamsburg. This one will knock her bonnet off! The facings of a c.1850 patina of an industry-weathered heart pine 4"x8" beam were saved for her

And I thought my Thursday bucket was substantial I've bagged and tagged it, hung it in the basement. But what do you do with it?

String Japanese lanterns. Bose wireless lava rock "speakers". Splash pool for the kids ...

Reminds me of a big job I did at a Lutheran church in old North Philadelphia. Half a lifetime ago. The bishop had a few tons of matching stone delivered for the Polish masons to construct a handicapped ramp retaining wall. A few Latino locals would drive up every night in tiny beater cars with half their families stuffed inside, fitch a few dozen stones at a time. The pile disappeared before the masons started the wall. Wonder what happened to that gal visiting the church from Germany? From the German high school choir? No English, but expressive eyes? Who wanted to stay in America and marry a plumber? I'm SURE the bishop would have married us if we'd have asked . . . We'd have five kids out of high school, the oldest maybe 30, youngest finishing up her doctorate in marine biology at UCLA ... And I'd be fat Fat FAT !!!

Out of my stomping grounds. Stopped at a Revolutionary War cemetery, an old mill, enjoyed winding roads. The Mennonites set up grilled chicken dinners a mile from the park. A line of women in black with white collars watched me eat with approval. My trick for eating like a gentleman in unfamiliar surroundings? I never order a beverage. Forces you to eat more slowly. More deliberately. And when in familiar surroundings, I do not order a beverage. Because I'm cheap.

May 7, 20224 yr Monitor Riser cutout and joinery is done, and glue up has been completed. Sanding is going to be so much fun I can hardly stand it!! The material is 5/8 QS red oak to match the desktop. Front edge bevel is 35* to match the desktop and the laptop stand. The legs are also at 35* and are splined bevels Enough glue has been used to make sure these things aren’t going anywhere. Tomorrow will be a fun day of sanding and finishing but it looks like it is going to turn out pretty well.
