My original WM my wife gave me as a Christmas gift a looong time ago. I have a couple newer "knock-off versions" which are so-so. Purchased one of the original WM, Type 1 at a yard sale a few years back for $20????. It is HEAVY, but much larger work table. Have a weakness for them. I've since bought a couple more at auction for less than $20 each, plus one of the "bench top" models. Have to keep them folded up or they become catch-alls.

I'll guess the workmate clamp top was an older patent that B&D either licensed or was a public domain design.  As you can still buy the original B&D workmate with it's dual height and easy fold up base design I'll bet they have either renewed their original patent or it hasn't run out.

Thanks for all the link though kmealy.

The "original" WM similar in design to the 425 is this model.

I remember when they came out. TV commercials.

I bought a pair of these hold downs for my WM. I have tried them and like them but no real torture test of them.

Nice! It's probably about time I drill a few 3/4" holes in my butcher block kitchen island. And make the commitment to turn it into a real work bench.

You brought back a memory of mine about the holes in my workmate for accessories.  I wanted to use a couple of the  clamp downs on a bed I made for my drill press.  The holes looked to be 3/4" and I had a 3/4" spade bit for drilling the holes.  Drilled the holes.  Checked the fit only to find it too tight. Measured the width of the hole and the width of my spade bit and both were spot on .75".  Turns out the holes needed were likely 20mm, and in those days before the internet and metric invasion I couldn't buy metric bits at the local small town hardware stores.  I took a rat tail rasp and crudely enlarged the holes until the clamps fit.

These days I would throw in a 20mm Forstner bit bought online to do the job. Oh for the good ole days. :)

Wonder of wonders. I removed the base leg stand, one extension table, and the motor from my newly-acquired Taiwan-built Delta ∆ 34-670 10" contractor table saw. ALL of the bolts and bolt/nut pairs were 12mm. This is a 1988 saw.
