March 12, 20224 yr Popular Post Love your patience Steven. My boss wants me to document the most common CNC job I do for students before I officially retire so student helpers can assume the role I played. The truth is that box/finger joints are by leaps and bounds the most common joints I cut using a CNC with the boards clamped vertically. I'll throw in a link to this thread just in case they can't figure out the CNC part. Even before we had CNCs to play with we cut them using a fixture on a router table. Although I had one student ask to be shown how to layout and cut dovetails by hand tools I never had any interest from a student who wanted to cut box joints by hand. Nice to know its possible if a dryer is running. 4D

March 12, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Part of the 3 hour tour in the shop, today....check the depth stop.. as the saw wasn't cutting deep enough..toe had slipped a bit.. More of the layout, saw, chop...until.. Was doing #4 corner...#3 came next... All 4 corners were done...knock this back apart...hammer assist. Then clamps, glue and a brush, and.... Maybe a better view.. Bench vise is lending a hand...even got the panel for the bottom cut to size.. Once the box comes out of the clamps, I can level the bottom edges, and then glue this to the bottom of the box.. Then, I can start on a lid, of some sort Stay tuned..

A solid wood panel glued to the bottom of a perimeter box will be a good test for expansion/contraction conflict theory. Dip it into some Elmer's glue to seal it from the weather and you should be fine. In the college shop we've got a big long ancient cabinet full of wood drawers made the same way and 90% of the bottom panels are split. A few have also pushed the corner finger joints apart. Those bottoms must have swelled up a bit from something spilled on them. The bottoms that failed completely have been replaced by sheets of metal folded and brad nailed to the box sides. 4D
March 13, 20224 yr Author Popular Post This was a trick I learned from Paul Sellers, while building those Desktop Organizers.

The top detaches instead of cracking. That is a sign of a well made instrument. But I guess your box falling apart would not be a sign of a well made box?
March 13, 20224 yr Author Popular Post They haven't yet....this is about the 5th box made with the glued on slab bottom.. Board is about a whopping 4" wide....and just over 11" long. Per Sellers' Instructions...bottom panel was simply glued to the bottom of this box....
March 13, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok, Fresh out of the clamps, needed a bit of work.. A check with a square... Then worked on the longer sides... Gaps needed filled...too...got around to the ends.. Almost done....still had to level the top and bottom edges, luck of the draw which will be which, might as well do both Then test the bottom panel for fit.. A little over size is better than undersized..we can trim the "overs" Thin bead of glue wiped along the edges...then 8 clamps.. Let this sit a day, while I figure out how to make this.. Into a lid of some sort....and..where to cut this to size..... Stay tuned
March 14, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Got bored sitting around, so...lid was found to be thick enough(1/2") that I didn't need to build a collar. Cut that to size. Box came out of the clamps, needing a little trimming on the bottom panel...Millers Falls No.8 took care of that... Mated up the lid to the box...and clamped in the bench vise....hinges were install.. Then turn the box over, and fine tune the fit of the lid to the box..and install a latch.. Block plane is there to add a slight bevel to the corners.. Plane is a Stanley No. 60-1/2 Low Angle. The colour is called Cordovan (Maroon) Letting this box sit overnight...and see about a coat of Amber Shellac, Monday? Hey, them hinges work! Stay tuned..
March 14, 20224 yr Popular Post Another beauty! Do you think you'll be able to find stuff to put in it!
March 15, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Friend of the family calls Hobby Lobby her second home...might take both boxes to her, and let her see what she can do... PIP Time... Show-off... Decided these fit well with the size of this box... This is smaller than it looks, BTW....this is after 2 coats of Amber Shellac... Going after a stash of Ash lumber this week....looking at ten 1 x 6 x 10' boards....will need to cut those down a bit, to fit inside the Chevy.... About time to post these two as a Project? Whether to do them as separate Projects, or a pair as one Project? Thanks for looking in....
March 16, 20224 yr Popular Post That’s really a nice gesture with the gifting. I’m certain she will appreciate having one of those gorgeous boxes

March 16, 20224 yr Popular Post That's a great looking little box Steven, I'm sure it will be appreciated

Steve, you you rely only on if it will sit flat, or use tools of some sort? I've actually only got a slab of granite for checking level but will be ordering a squarre shortly. Currently the squarest thing in the 'shop' if the card scraper.

Plus, they ain't got no numbers to cornfuze me.

Wonder if it is the same company? I'd planned on ordering a square the same time I order a dovetail marking jig ... The 'new' lid for my box went on crooked. Something is not straight! I'll give it to my plumber buddy for his shop
March 16, 20224 yr Author Popular Post To "level" the top edges...I just use a plane long enough tp register on an end and a side, and work my way around. Test the panel looking for gaps...then lower the high spots until the panel sit flat... And no gaps...
March 16, 20224 yr Popular Post Thanks Steve. The rock-it method was going in circles. I’ve got a long plane and will try that method next time.
