January 20, 20224 yr Popular Post Big thanks to the forum and Laguna. What a wonderful gift. It arrived this afternoon and I got it assembled in about two hours. Wow. The fit and finish is excellent. Everything assembled easily. It didn’t come with a blade so I won’t be able to make cuts till at least tomorrow. This will be my first exposure to ceramic guides. I will be using this saw to replace my SS which I use for fine detail cutting and it will probably have a 1/4” or 3/16” blade on it. I will give the ceramic guides a go but I may end up with their cool blocks due to the narrow blade. I am also going to have to build a custom base for it to bring it up about 7” so I can use the SS next to it as a run off table if needed. Plus for me at 6’3” the 38” table height is a bit low for fine detail work. Again many thanks and especially to John Morris for coordinating everything and Al B for all the measurements he supplied me with so I could prep the space. Paul
January 20, 20224 yr Popular Post Looks like it's a perfect fit. Congrats again Paul. Looking forward to your use & review.
January 20, 20224 yr Popular Post Congratulations, Paul. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger bandsaw but I am winding down. My SS had a 6" opening between table and top guides. I hope this laguna has a bigger opening. Edited January 20, 20224 yr by FlGatorwood
January 20, 20224 yr Popular Post Enjoy your new saw @Masonsailor. I use the 3/16" blades for cutting bandsaw boxes with the ceramic guides. If you do opt for the cool blocks, let us know if you like them better. I love my Laguna bandsaw and really thank Laguna for their support at The Patriot Woodworker. January 21, 20224 yr nice prize there. I bought a used Steel City one, with the riser block already installed, a few years ago, works fine for what I do.
January 21, 20224 yr Author Popular Post I got a 1/4” blade on it yesterday and did some cutting on some 4/4 maple. I have to say that the ceramic guides give a lot more side to side stability than standard cool blocks. Guiding through curved cuts and tracking are very good. Instead of 1/4” square blocks they are placed on end so there is about 1”X 1/4” surface area on the top and bottom guides. They are not as quiet as bearing guides but have a lot more blade support so I think the noise difference is a good trade off. Compared to the Grizzly, Shopsmith and Powermatic the dust collection is way better. Almost 100%. It has a couple of issues as far as blade changing that maybe will add an extra 5 min to do a blade change but for me that’s not much of an issue since I will be leaving that 1/4” blade on permanently and only be doing blade changes to replace a dull blade. Again a good trade off for better blade support. The table is warped to the point that the miter guage catches when sliding across it. I haven’t heard back from Laguna yet but I’m sure they will take care of it. Meanwhile it was easy to correct by grinding an offset on the nut on the table stabilizer. Overall very happy with it. Paul
January 25, 20224 yr Author Popular Post I started on the base for the saw today and finished glueing up all the pieces for the carcass, drawers and drawer fronts. Paul
