November 3, 20214 yr Popular Post Had a call before we went on a trip . Customer got my name from woodworking club member. He had cut some 1 inch River birch and wanted bowls for Christmas. At the time I did not have a way to dry bowls that fast but acquired a kiln to do that job. He brought it over today and wants 5 bowls . He said he would sand and finish but I told him sanding would be tough off lathe. So being the one always in a rush I turned one today. He wanted thick so it is a tag 0.47. Bottom is a bit thinner. By the way the bowl is sitting on the kiln.
November 3, 20214 yr Popular Post Love the color of that wood. Dogwood is the only other wood that appears similar in little to no grain and almost white. And, a great shape on the bowl. Looking forward to final pictures.
November 3, 20214 yr Popular Post That will be a good test for the kiln. Nice start on it. I would think the half inch thickness should be enough to adjust for warp.
November 3, 20214 yr Popular Post Nicely done Gerald. When you have the time would be very interested in a tour of your kiln.
November 3, 20214 yr That looks like a fairly large bowl. Can you fit more than one at a time in the kiln ? Paul

Paul Yes I can either put on more than one shelf or place a block or frame inside lower bowl and stack more in it, just have to leave airspace. I checked this morning before going to pickup some cherry logs. Weight yesterday was just over 1100 Gm and today 890. It did warp and there is a tiny crack. Original rough was just over 11.5 inch but looks smaller now. Edited November 3, 20214 yr by Gerald
December 8, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Almost done with the second turning. Got 6. Bowls returned and sanded waiting for tenon removal. Two of the bowls did develop some minor cracks in the drying process. The worst is the Last on so I filled with CA and we will see next week how well that comes out.
December 8, 20214 yr Popular Post Busy, busy, busy. Well it's keeping you off the streets and from underfoot in the kitchen. You keep this up Gerald you're gonna have to hire some of Santa's Elves.
December 8, 20214 yr Author Popular Post @lew No finish on these . The customer will do that . That is the only reason I took the job this late. I did discover that RB is very porous wood. While blowing off the dust the air went right thru what is almost a half inch bowl.

December 8, 20214 yr Popular Post Looking good. I like the idea of not having to put the finish on them.
December 12, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Got the last one done we and removed tenons to finish bottom on all. Have to brand them tomorrow and then it is done.
