August 22, 20214 yr Popular Post Rough turned a 8" oak platter this morning. This one has some nice grain and some spalting. Will soak in soapy water for 3 days and air dry. 2nd turned another bowl but it's not ready for show and tell just yet. This one has copper inlays. Will post pictures when I finish with the finish. .40

I haven't heard of that technique. @lew I hadn't heard of it either until Lew brought it up. Here is one of the articles on the subject. https://www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/soap-in-your-bowl It has worked well for me in my limited testing. Bowls dry a bit slower but have less distortion and cracking. .40
August 22, 20214 yr Popular Post Son and family came over Saturday for a meal of Carne Asada, a Mexican meat market (carneceria) prepared sirloin. Phyl made some pico de gallo, finely chopped ripe red tomatoes, white onion, jalapeño, cilantro, lime and, some salt. Grandson prepared Mexican corn, Granddaughter cut up the mango and watermelon and our son and, DIL grilled the meat and warmed the tortillas. Phyl and I set the table. Great meal, topped off with Phyl's fresh peach cobbler and ice cream. I cut the peaches. Today, I get to strap on that sprayer and slay some more weeds. About 5 times with that sprayer is my limit for one day. So far, about half of the gallon of the pre emergent herbicide has been used. I ordered another gallon. I'm not nearly half done. We have a lot of gravel driveways. Maybe, if the body holds out, I can get some more work done in the shop.

August 22, 20214 yr Popular Post Decided to forego the killing spree. Did a bit more work on the shop. Got another double 2X6 shelf installed. This one is only 6' long. After a cooling off respite, I'll get back at it. I feel a nap coming on, though.
August 22, 20214 yr Popular Post Got quite a bit done in the shop this weekend. It's too hot and I'm done for the day. Heading to the parlor with a big cold glass of tea to put my feet up. Finished the oak bowl that I mentioned yesterday. Copper inlay, Tried and True Oil finish. Prepared a large pecan bowl blank with the chainsaw, recip saw, and still had to lop off corners with a plane to get it on my 14" lathe. It was crazy hard to cut and dulled my tools quickly. I ended up using the Hunter Hercules for most of the roughing. After I got it round and on the chuck I got set up to core it. Got a nice little blank out of the deal instead of more "artisan shavings" on the floor. .40
August 22, 20214 yr I like the idea of coring Just got too much wood to make it economical. It does double the fun.
