Rank Names

We could make it astronomical, such as:

1. Meteor

2. Comet

3.  Moon

4.  Planet (but no references to "uranus", for obvious reasons)

5.  Planet with rings

6.  Solar, or planetary, system

7.  Galaxy

8.  Big Bang

We could make each point a light year, with so many light years to advance to the next rank.

If you can figure out naval rates and ranks and then explain it to everyone, I'm game.   .40

We could!

Hey Tom, do you like astronomy?

  • Popular Post

Well, yeah, but not to the point where I can talk scientifically about it.  I like the science fiction side of it, but a lot of that is fake anyway.  I'm currently 5 seasons through Star Trek Voyager on Netflix, almost done with the series.  Only 52 more episodes to watch.  All that being said, I would like to buy a good telescope with a computer feed someday.  Then find a spot with a lack of light contamination so that I can actually see something.  Why do you ask John, is that one of your interests?

Some time back my daughter became interested in astronomy. We located a club where people got together with their scopes. Those without their own equipment were able to view the skies using the equipment others made available. You might find such a club in your area. I found it quite interesting.

A couple of hours ago, I posted this in response to 40's remark about figuring out Navy rates and ranks.  So, here is the post that got moved lower.

Navy rates for enlisted.

1. Seaman recruit

2. Seaman apprentice

3. Seaman/Corpman/Airman

4. Petty officer 3rd class

5. Petty officer 2nd class

6. Petty officer 1st class

7. Chief

8. Senior Chief

9. Master chief

WO 1 Warrant officer 1

WO 2 Warrant officer 2

WO 3 Warrant officer 3

WO 4 Warrant officer 4

Officers

Ensign

Lieutanant junior grade

Lieutanant

Lieutanant commander

Commander

Captain

Admiral (rear lower half)

Admiral (rear upper half)

Admiral (the name I can't recall)

Admiral 4 star

Commodore Admiral only in war times (5 star)

That was the way it was 50 years ago.  Maybe it has changed with all the new uniforms.  Sailors now look like Marines.  I love the first 2 levels of admiral.  Rear with upper and lower halves.  LOL

It got moved from where I originally posted.

I was Air Force, not Navy, but I think that rank is Vice Admiral.

And the 4 star admiral is Admiral.

Just like our 3 star generals were Lieutenant General, and the 4 star were General.

I'm sure someone with more current naval experience will come along and confirm or correct.

Dunno how this will fly butttttt…….. This is a woodworking forum,no? (Well most of the time anyways, when Gunny’s not hauling bodies outta minivans :) ) We could do ranks as tools. Mallet, handsaw, scrollsaw, bandsaw, tablesaw, router, vise, well you get the idea. What we did for the tables at our wedding was to use fish names. Our bosses were at the largemouth bass table.

…or we are “The Patriot Woodworkers” maybe use the ranks in the Continental Army…

Now that you mention that, it sounds correct.  Like I said, I am drawing on 50 years of memory and what I remember from the Blue Jackets manual.

My son and I have dabbled a little with his telescope, but that is about it.

I was and am more curious about the extent you are involved, just being nosy is all :) I read your reply above as well about your interest in scope and hooking it up to a PC, that is really cool!

Like this idea.  I'm not sure I'd have wanted to wear the insignia of Colonel down to Ensign.  Looks more like a fine mark to shoot at than a badge of rank!  :)

I’ll be “that guy” with the question, “Why even have rank?”  Does RHIP?

I think we should go by how many things a person builds each year.. and also how many pieces of equipment they own....and I get to be the judge of each persons projects... If it don't pass my test then the end of the line for those losers and they will be required to watch as the world turns each and every day for the rest of his or hers life.. Don't rightly know if it is even on anymore but there are other beauties out there that could make a persons skin roll up and die..

Do you think things will still work okay if all this person labeling is is tossed in the fire and forgotten about.

But back to something I would like to see back again and that is when I spend an hour or so typing and I accidently click off to go eat and come back and all that typing is gone and I have to start over.. This chaps me more than what someone wants to put in front of my name.  I had enough of the name rank and serial number when I got drafted.. Enough already

I thought I had asked the same question a few days ago, but don't see that post. I'm not sure we even need such things.

Seems it is a default part of package.  Myself I find it amusing the names and all.  For outsiders looking in for 1st time can be helpful if looking for solution.  Seeing someone that has been here awhile answer a question might give confidence in the answer.
