June 9, 20214 yr Popular Post In building out my shop, I've done a ton of research for materials. One thing I learned is that the BORGs are not the places to shop! Locally owned yards offer far better pricing AND quality.

Something it doesn't really address (for me anyhow) is that a big lot of our regular lumber supply seems to come from elsewhere. Plywood from China, 2x4's from Finland and two weeks ago I bought some pine stair steps that came from New Zealand. I get the shipping part of the equation. The "perfect storm" of lumber pricing starts way before covid. A lot like computer chips having stalled our auto manufacturing. Edited June 9, 20214 yr by Cal
June 9, 20214 yr Popular Post We've spent the years since 1945 honing a worldwide economic system, with the complexities enabled by the development of the computer in the 70's. The amount of detail is incredible, but that is also a vulnerability since it has worked so well that no one is really prepared with alternatives. It turns out that maintaining alternatives costs a bit of profit margin, and would reduce executives' bonuses, so "keep it simple" is "dangle it on a thread". Sooner or later threads break. Too many people think Humpty Dumpty is a children's tale!
June 9, 20214 yr Finally got the chance to watch Dan's video . Some interesting stuff on supply chain and now for the question--why are Toyota lots also empty?

June 11, 20214 yr I ran to the lumber yard to get 2 sheets of 1/2” OSB and 2 1x8x8’ boards. Damage was $142. OSB was $52 a sheet.
June 11, 20214 yr I bought a 6 foot 1/2 inch thick by 7 inch width that alone costed me 76 bucks just for that one piece. Its definitely NOT cheap.

I can still get pine at 1.69 bdft at the smaller lumber shop where I typically buy all my lumber.
June 12, 20214 yr Popular Post Going thru some receipts from last years bath remodel. 15/32x4x8 32.60 each, 2x4x8 3.61. Ah the good old days.

June 12, 20214 yr It's a "Pine Rush" I tell ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somebody found these panning dumpster contents for pine. Recent add on Craigslist.
June 15, 20214 yr Went to lowes today to pick up some 2x8's and the signs had me a little confused. How could a board be 2' longer & .70 less. Well 10' boards it is. Load everything and doing some quick math in my head, that's right old school, and I'm thinking I should be around 100 bucks. Check the receipt and now those signs are even more confusing with the boards scanning at 18.82 each. Back in to the service desk and show the pic with the item# and get the 13.92 price. Now I'm starting to wonder how many things I've bought and didn't check the scanned price to the posted signage.
June 15, 20214 yr Popular Post Looking at the difference in the two signs the $18.82 sign must have been knocked off and is laying under the stack of 2X8X10s. Glad to see they gave you the price you saw.

June 16, 20214 yr Popular Post I'm sure there are warehouses full of lumber and they can decide how much to ship just to control the prices & then blame it on a lack of delivery drivers. Same game went on with the oil prices when Katrina hit. Jack the price up so high then cut it in half and people think they are getting a deal & don't realize it's double what it was a year ago.
