Basically my wife doesn't want me near the kitchen, laundry room, or anything house chore related. Heck I can't go get a beer without her grabbing it from me and opening it up and shooing me out. Life is good!!
January 2, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Load of Bath towels is done....so are me slips.. Plywood was cut.. Once I got it marked out...bandsaw , as the tablesaw was busy with other things.. Perfect miter cut....almost every time...operator error not withstanding... Had to trim the plywood a bit... For a better fit... Mitrebox was done...then I could use the tablesaw to square the lid panels up for length, and width, then start on a beveled edge.. More on that, next time...waiting on yet another glue-up Floor is being glued in place onto those slips...yes, that one end snapped off, again.. Stay tuned...
January 3, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Well, no Laundry Detail, this afternoon...still had about 2 hours of hiding out in the shop...clamps were removed...and gussets were cobbled up.. That screw head is "proud" for a reason...use it as a Plane Stop....Gussets were installed with just clamps and glue... Before I snap another piece off test fit the top bar,,,again.. Did not drive it all the way down, this time.. Then set it aside, as it will get in the way...Cut a center divider to length, and checked the fit.. Had a bit of a taper, to it? We have ways... Just a little more off the end...it would also be nice if all the divider parts were the same "height", so.. Working on it....Dividers are out of Ash. Cut and fit 3 cross dividers... They all needed their tapers flattened out, too...then a few notches were made... Then 3 matching notches into the center divider... About ready to glue up? Tried a dry fit, first,,, Then some glue was added....along with the top bar getting installed.. This time, it WAS driven home...hence the glue running away....but, how to clamp things in place? Yeah, "Ve Haft Vays" Everybody gets a clamp. Ran long cauls under the box, clamps press down on the ash pads inside.. Bottom cauls go all the way across...Once all of this inside work is done..I can come back, and clean up the outside of the box... So..was I done for the day Not exactly Set this thing over on the tablesaw, out of the way...Lids needed planed... One face was kind of rough...glue joints needed leveled out.. Getting there...was close enough that the #3 could take over... To where the Cedar was nice and shiny... One lid already had both of it's bevels done....the other lid needed it's started Was close....have to wait on the glue-up to cure, before I can fit both lids into the box... I think that will about do it, for one day? Closed up shop.. Stay tuned...

January 4, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Burger Beer used to come in 8 packs....so did Little Kings..... Hmmmm...Salt, Pepper, Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, jar of pickles, an Onion, and a bottle of A-1 Steak Sauce....Pic-nic essentials, right?

January 6, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Late Night on WHIO-TV.....back when they were doing all night movies....There was a little guy as a host (Joe Rockhold, maybe) that during EVERY commercial break, he'd be on there, selling more Little Kings....and always filling up a mug of the stuff....and by the next Commercial Break...said mug was empty...again...Anyone else remember this? Ok, back to working on Cedar....clamps came off today....top bar needed a little hand plane work.. One end was a bit high. Then sanded all the glue joints smooth.. Gave the corners a bit of a rounding over...Then started to fit the lids...angles weren't quite right.. Planed them til they did fit....1st lid was then installed.. Right off the bat...had to adjust where the screws could go...to close up a split where the first screw was started.....without a proper pilot hole....nail into the cordless drill..for the rest of the screws.. Then the second lid was fitted...curlies in the plane, from cutting the angles...needed helping hands, though..Got tired of chasing the box across the bench To install the hinges for lid #2....Added a latch for this side, off-set from the first latch.. Wasn't room on the top bar for a handle...so a couple were used on the ends....had also wiped the box down,,,so 1st coat of varnish was brushed on... Will let this dry a day...fine sand it, and try a second coat.... Stay tuned
January 6, 20215 yr Popular Post I have never used cedar for anything other than liners or else left unfinished. How do you finish it without the finish alligatoring over time. I have seen a lot of old blanket chests that are solid, but look pretty awful due to that. BTW - great looking little box Steven Edited January 6, 20215 yr by Cal
January 6, 20215 yr Author Popular Post I have only ever finished Cedar on the outside....Even a Solid Cedar Blanket Chest was done on the outside....letting the inside surfaces breathe. I used use several coats of varnish, with a fine snadpaper, or steel wool rub in-between.
January 6, 20215 yr Like Cal I had that problem with a cedar box for the wife's flute. What I found by research is seal the cedar with shellac and it will not do that. Not sure how many years it has been now but it apparently did work.
January 6, 20215 yr Author Popular Post From a long time ago...bottom 2 drawers are indeed drawers, top "drawer" is a fake.. Took 4 coats of varnish...first 2 just disappeared down into the wood... From about 2011....resawn from 2 x 6 rough sawn Cedar.....
January 7, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Sanded the box to 320 grit, today....by hand. Decided to just varnish the insides...more about how the box looks, than about the Cedar Smell... Ash dividers, glued to Luann Plywood...top bar is also Ash... Then close the box up, and added a second coat to the outside.. More about how the grain looks, than smells for this box...a view of the top? Those were the smallest locking rings Lowes had in stock.... So, until I do find some smaller ones, these will just have to do..... Letting things dry out for a day or 2.....then a rub down with some 0000 steel wool, maybe some wax? Stay tuned..
