Just a word of caution regarding working with cedar.  It can be toxic and it does have toxic properties.  It can cause skin reactions and lung problems.     Now, that is some really beautifu

Congratulations to you for having a new one in the family.  They can be a joy.  Love them every chance you get.  And, when no one is looking, spoil them and then return the little ones to the parents.  LOL

And, the little boxes and serving tray are very nice.

Came out of the clamps this afternoon...wasn't much else going on...

1770967341_CedarTrayProjectendcleanup.JPG.7b2d450370573229164158ea3e545447.JPG

End grain along that right edge...I also planed a round-over along that edge...got the 2 ends done....needed a better set-up to plane the sides...:WonderScratch:

1424138140_CedarTrayProjectclamped.JPG.a48288a3f2c07d6e61d04f578bc67795.JPG

I think that should do the trick.

959880267_CedarTrayProjectsidecleanup.JPG.93673ac711410ac42d9d1b21956409c9.JPG

A little tricky right on the ends..:ChinScratch:..Dremel sanding drum was used inside the handles, rounding the grips a bit...along the curvy spots that a block plane can't go...:ChinScratch:

Seymour Smith & Sons went to work...then everything was sanded down to 320 grit..and then wiped down...B)

Opened the can of varnish...had to remove the "skim" off the remains.:BangingHead:...and gave it a shot of DNA to thin the goop a bit...then brushed it on..

711747859_CedarTrayProjectPIP.JPG.ecec12420cc37a12a1a37fff93603fba.JPG

Took 2 tries,:ArguingSmileys: but I managed to cut a piece of plexiglass to the RIGHT SIZE to just fit inside...

1753987123_CedarTrayProjectplexiinplace.JPG.08e95945a0bcc9475244665b0d59b570.JPG

To protect the finish from things being carried around in the tray.....will let this dry a day or two...kind of busy tomorrow...:ChinScratch:

Then see IF it will need a second coat...not sure about any brass fittings for this...we'll see..

Stay tuned...:cowboy:

Came out very nice.

That is one really nice tray.  Can hardly wait to see the finished product.  Nice work.

24570262_CedarToolBoxboxparts.JPG.5917415f042123b4853af19bf0b765dc.JPG

Went through what was left of all the Cedar planks...removed the T&G junk..cut out the worst of the knots...Let a couple sections sit in the vise for a day or 2..

1722585758_CedarToolBoxlidparts.JPG.43edbfe19e499be279fff40d4fc609ed.JPG

As they seemed to want to curve a bit.:ArguingSmileys:..2 others will be used for sides of a box..

591569131_CedarToolBoxsidepanels.JPG.4ad71f03627d1d77550db6b9141d65a9.JPG

And a few others got place into some clamps with glue and cauls...

2028337912_CedarToolBoxend2.JPG.cc4c64918d118504784aca7547812ea8.JPG

All squared up, and now flat and smooth...made cutting the angles easier...

2080437746_CedarToolBoxroofpitchfinder.JPG.3bb0b7c28e4271b5edc43e2a8a135b06.JPG

Hmmm...42 degrees...maybe a 10/12 pitch? :WonderScratch:  peak gets clipped down a bit...have an Oak ridge to install..

723898195_CedarToolBoxOakridge.JPG.16b7465cd3f97a9c00506a1e8d2b2bf7.JPG

Tends to hold onto a handle's screws a bit better, and a place for the latches to go...Then get the ends all nice and smooth..

The old Stanley No. 3, Type 11 is almost too big for this?  :ChinScratch:Then work on the 2 sides..

157783756_CedarToolBoxcleanedtherough.JPG.96705d3f3402d23b8e9e8b804c5e120f.JPG

As usual, one face was smooth and this face...wasn't....we have ways....

1621799553_CedarToolBox2sides2ends.JPG.f50a080b038644cb3cacb84f51ba8e1f.JPG

So...now I have both ends ready, AND the 2 sides....how about the lids?:ChinScratch:

1763058615_CedarToolBoxlidglue-ups.JPG.29c4c2c9c84dc319107cfe40d54cd068.JPG

parts were planed smooth, an edge or 2 jointed...then glue, cauls and clamps....letting these sit a day..or 2...Monday shop will be closed...:KooKooClock:

Next up ( Tuesday? :WonderScratch:) Dovetails...including the ones for the ridge beam....

May see about a groove to house a plywood bottom...:ChinScratch:.after that???:WonderScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

I like using Aromatic Cedar also. I knew it creates a hazardous dust (most woods do) and took as many precautions as I usually do. However members of this site informed me that it much more hazardous than I knew. I no longer turn it.

Haven't had any problems with the stuff....must be from using handtools mostly?   Shop was closed today....was out car shopping....:cowboy:

Great time of year to buy a car.  Twice now I've done my homework, made what I thought was a pretty low offer, and they said yes.

Hmmm, things seem to go better, when I am also watching the washing.....

721539610_CedarToolBoxbadnotching.JPG.cc999741f494e66a1a5b2429a6d0ecf8.JPG

Should have done this a little bit differently.....sawing the 2 lines wasn't too hateful....but then I got in a hurry with a chisel to pop the waste out....and snapped both sides of the notch off.:ArguingSmileys::BangingHead::ArguingSmileys:    Glue clamp and 2 cauls, and left the shop for the night...

At least I got the last 2 corners done....

755491819_CedarToolBoxdryfit3.JPG.698bcfa1f8aa7420873fa0a6f119cd5b.JPG

This is corner #3....may try to set up to plough a groove to hold the bottom panel in place....we'll see. :WonderScratch:

Stay tuned...there MAY be some cussing involved, today...

Ok, canceled the Stanley 45 operation...have a new plan:ChinScratch:

First off, I need to glue up the 4 sides of the box...

2056515164_CedarToolBoxclampsandcauls.JPG.5f21c5d3f5d0875c040d364d4c72aefe.JPG

The repaired end is on the bottom of this pile....had to add spacer bars :WonderScratch:

1866460039_CedarToolBoxglueupspacerbars.JPG.61b0ef525bd4c12394864994ca01fa2a.JPG

otherwise, the sides wanted to bow in...about an 1/8" or so...let this sit as is for a while....:Tapping:

Instead of ploughing a groove, and having to then fill square holes in the corners...we will be using "slips" :WonderScratch:

( mind out of the gutter..:DevilLaughing:)   They are thin strips glued in place to support a box's bottom panel...something like these..:ChinScratch:

1126403833_CedarToolBoxslips.JPG.c9f2efc08aef60ba1a8f533cf7315a10.JPG

Had a piece of 3/8" thick Ash scrap...goal is for a 1/4" thick strip, so

864441230_CedarToolBoxslipcuttersetup.JPG.684d1301bf55920b035e154b1d249cb7.JPG

Zero clearance overlay, set the fence 1/4" away from  the blade...and because I like to keep me fingers as they are...2073080508_CedarToolBoxpushstick.JPG.3e7a1332aa9715c839b29c6e1eaf49ca.JPG

I have a thin push stick.   Just an old saw handle, with a 1/4" plywood "blade"   notched for the thicker stuff...can just push things through with just the end...

So, to install these slips, I need to miter the ends....and make a snug fit...question being...:ChinScratch:

973454994_CedarToolBoxmitersawselection.JPG.93fa03829528b196915b93c38cf00ba1.JPG

Which Mitersaw ( cordless) to use....may just go with the Stanley No. 2246A....sitting on the right...

Once the slips are glued in place, I can add a plywood bottom panel, that I'll cut for close fit...

Then I can worry about the lids..both of them....and maybe some dividers?:WonderScratch:

Stay tuned...:cowboy:
