December 24, 20205 yr Popular Post Congrats on the Great-Grandpa Steven!!! That tray looks very nice. Is that called a butlers tray, or something else?
December 25, 20205 yr Congrats on the Great Grandpa! Must be great to see 3 generations of you and the Missus making their way in this world.
December 25, 20205 yr Popular Post Congratulations to you for having a new one in the family. They can be a joy. Love them every chance you get. And, when no one is looking, spoil them and then return the little ones to the parents. LOL And, the little boxes and serving tray are very nice.
December 25, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Came out of the clamps this afternoon...wasn't much else going on... End grain along that right edge...I also planed a round-over along that edge...got the 2 ends done....needed a better set-up to plane the sides... I think that should do the trick. A little tricky right on the ends....Dremel sanding drum was used inside the handles, rounding the grips a bit...along the curvy spots that a block plane can't go... Seymour Smith & Sons went to work...then everything was sanded down to 320 grit..and then wiped down... Opened the can of varnish...had to remove the "skim" off the remains....and gave it a shot of DNA to thin the goop a bit...then brushed it on.. Took 2 tries, but I managed to cut a piece of plexiglass to the RIGHT SIZE to just fit inside... To protect the finish from things being carried around in the tray.....will let this dry a day or two...kind of busy tomorrow... Then see IF it will need a second coat...not sure about any brass fittings for this...we'll see.. Stay tuned...
December 26, 20205 yr That is one really nice tray. Can hardly wait to see the finished product. Nice work.
December 27, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok..getting caught up....tray is sitting on the Dinning room table, right now...we have work to do...( 2 days work, in one post?) Went through what was left of all the Cedar planks...removed the T&G junk..cut out the worst of the knots...Let a couple sections sit in the vise for a day or 2.. As they seemed to want to curve a bit...2 others will be used for sides of a box.. And a few others got place into some clamps with glue and cauls... And that was it..for one day....today? Clamps came off....needed to work on these quite a bit... All squared up, and now flat and smooth...made cutting the angles easier... Hmmm...42 degrees...maybe a 10/12 pitch? peak gets clipped down a bit...have an Oak ridge to install.. Tends to hold onto a handle's screws a bit better, and a place for the latches to go...Then get the ends all nice and smooth.. The old Stanley No. 3, Type 11 is almost too big for this? Then work on the 2 sides.. As usual, one face was smooth and this face...wasn't....we have ways.... So...now I have both ends ready, AND the 2 sides....how about the lids? parts were planed smooth, an edge or 2 jointed...then glue, cauls and clamps....letting these sit a day..or 2...Monday shop will be closed... Next up ( Tuesday? ) Dovetails...including the ones for the ridge beam.... May see about a groove to house a plywood bottom....after that??? Stay tuned..
December 28, 20205 yr I like using Aromatic Cedar also. I knew it creates a hazardous dust (most woods do) and took as many precautions as I usually do. However members of this site informed me that it much more hazardous than I knew. I no longer turn it.
December 28, 20205 yr Author Haven't had any problems with the stuff....must be from using handtools mostly? Shop was closed today....was out car shopping....

December 29, 20205 yr Author Popular Post LATE night Laundry Detail..even got in a nap..first 2 loads, wash and dry....takes a while...means more time to sit around and wait, or Marking gauge to scribe some "baselines" to bruise... Bevel gauge to lay out some lines to cut... Takes this saw about 7 full strokes, to go 1/4" deep... Select a few chisels, to chop out the waste.. A square and a knife to deepen the baseline ( Knife wall) On the face that will show, start a few chops, to prevent any breakouts...then flip over.. And complete the chops from the "inside" of the part..use these "pins" to lay out the tails...bandsaw to remove the waste, LEAVING the lines by cutting on the waste side of the lines... And, dry fit corner number 1 Repeat for Corner number 2...set aside for a bit...1st load is done washing, second load started, while 1st is in the dryer (keeping the shop warm, BTW) Even checked the corners for square... 2nd load is done in the washer, and loaded up into the dryer....worked on the ridge "beam" connection while I waited... Dovetailed, of course...dryer was soon done....time to stop for the night..0300hrs? Yep, late night. May try again this afternoon, we'll see... Stay tuned..
December 30, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm, things seem to go better, when I am also watching the washing..... Should have done this a little bit differently.....sawing the 2 lines wasn't too hateful....but then I got in a hurry with a chisel to pop the waste out....and snapped both sides of the notch off. Glue clamp and 2 cauls, and left the shop for the night... At least I got the last 2 corners done.... This is corner #3....may try to set up to plough a groove to hold the bottom panel in place....we'll see. Stay tuned...there MAY be some cussing involved, today...
December 31, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok, canceled the Stanley 45 operation...have a new plan First off, I need to glue up the 4 sides of the box... The repaired end is on the bottom of this pile....had to add spacer bars otherwise, the sides wanted to bow in...about an 1/8" or so...let this sit as is for a while.... Instead of ploughing a groove, and having to then fill square holes in the corners...we will be using "slips" ( mind out of the gutter..) They are thin strips glued in place to support a box's bottom panel...something like these.. Had a piece of 3/8" thick Ash scrap...goal is for a 1/4" thick strip, so Zero clearance overlay, set the fence 1/4" away from the blade...and because I like to keep me fingers as they are... I have a thin push stick. Just an old saw handle, with a 1/4" plywood "blade" notched for the thicker stuff...can just push things through with just the end... So, to install these slips, I need to miter the ends....and make a snug fit...question being... Which Mitersaw ( cordless) to use....may just go with the Stanley No. 2246A....sitting on the right... Once the slips are glued in place, I can add a plywood bottom panel, that I'll cut for close fit... Then I can worry about the lids..both of them....and maybe some dividers? Stay tuned...
