December 13, 20205 yr Popular Post have the leftover planks of Aromatic Red Cedar....was try to build a small box with a few pieces.. Dry fit. Stands a whopping 4" tall, BTW... glued up, and then cleaned up when it came back out of the clamps... marking gauge to show where the tablesaw's thin kerf will go... once that was done... Had to clean up the saw marks.. And then dig through the box of hardware....to find a couple hinges..and screws.. Then a latch.. Even found a couple fancy handles for the ends... Wednesday while by Pay Day, I can get a brush or two, and varnish the outside... Tried out the Scrollsaw today....next box will use dovetails....scrollsaw to cut the "tails"... Will decide later, what the final size of Box #2 will be... Stay tuned Pins I had to do the "Old Fashioned Way" with a saw and chisel
December 14, 20205 yr Popular Post Looks good, I have been doing sanding and finishing work all day. Got the cat high with the contact cement for the Formica.
December 14, 20205 yr Popular Post Just a word of caution regarding working with cedar. It can be toxic and it does have toxic properties. It can cause skin reactions and lung problems. Now, that is some really beautiful cedar and that is an awesome job. I like the little box.
December 14, 20205 yr Popular Post Great little box Steven. Did you cut the fingers with the scroll saw?
December 14, 20205 yr Author Popular Post No.....fingers were done on the bandsaw....main reason I went and cleaned up the old "shelf-sitter"....to see IF things can be cut a bit better. May see how much trouble it would be, to cut the pins for the dove tails.....

May see how much trouble it would be, to cut the pins for the dove tails..... HF is having a sale. Bet the dovetail jig is 20% off.
December 14, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Much easier ( and cheaper..) to simply tilt the table to match the dovetail angles....
December 15, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Tried the scroll saw to do pins....didn't go very well....so, I'll use the scroll saw for the tails, only... Second corner was done, while I was on "Laundry Detail".....I cut the offending pins off, and tried with the dovetail saw...and the chisels...new set is on the left..i think.. Rest of the box parts.. had to use the Stanley No. 3 to narrow the top and bottom parts to match...parts were cut to length on the Stanley 358 mitre box... Tomorrow's tasks....Corners 3 and 4....I now have a pattern, of sorts... I think it is a 3/8" wide dovetail bit....I can set the bevel gauge to this bit....and also the spacings....might be better than the old MK2 Eyeball? Stay tuned...
December 15, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Bit was hard to hold still, long enough to trace around it...but.. On the older bevel gauge I have...the pointed end is the same angle as most of the dovetails I make.. But, on the newer one.. Way too "pointy" to use... Nice start? I marked these wrong, which I found out AFTER the saw was done Cut the mistake off. I also tried the scrollsaw one more time It just won't follow a straight line....so..rounded up the "Usual Suspects" About 6 full strokes per cut....marking gauge to mark out a Baseline....which I soon set about to bruise... Then a selection of chisels to chop out the waste.. So...after 2+ hours of putzing around in the shop.. Glue, cauls, and a few clamps....will let this set overnight... Stay tuned..
December 17, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Last night, got bored sitting around...glue was already dried...removed the clamps, cleaned the joints up. Square the box, slice off the lid...plane the box and lid until no gaps seen... Might be getting better at this sort of thing... Corner details? Another view.. Then open the lid... Made a run to Hobby Lobby this afternoon.... Hinges, latches, and handles....was running low on parts...also remembered to pick up some brushes while I was out & about, today.. need to get that lid to fit a little better... Stay tuned...
December 17, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok....here's a scary thought.....next item might be a tray to sit these two on? Splayed out sides, floor a glue up of 2 or 3 planks, with the T&Gs showing? Maybe have the sides curvy....enough for some cut out handles? First off, I may change out them ugly oversized hinges on Box #1....install the hardware on Box #2.....and add a coat of varnish to both of them... Sounds like a "Plan"? Just might keep me busy for a few days Stay tuned..
December 17, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm...1 hour IN the shop...almost as long outside of the shop...Loaded stuff up to take to the shop.. Then started on hinges, first.. lay out... square is for scale...slots were "clocked"...set this aside... Box No.1...replaced the huge hinges for better sized ones....one at a time...block plane to level a few high spots.. Before I could add the latch to Box No. 2....front needed leveled a bit.. High spots are gone....then I could install a latch.. And a handle on top...both boxes got a good sanding....was a bit rough getting around some spots... then wipe them down, and start the 1 st of varnish... and... Let this dry overnight..and then see about a 2nd coat.. As for a tray...have a bit of lumber to sort through.. May go through and chop out all them huge knots...so far, I have 2 to make the bottom of a tray with.. Will see IF there might be a third one in there, somewhere? stay tuned..
December 18, 20205 yr I did some math tonight, I need 56 boxes all 3 1/2 inch square and 2 1/2 inches tall. 1/4 thickness no more. Oh, and they need bottoms as well. Hook me up on those and I will get back to you on the other 7 that are different size.
December 19, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail, today.....Boss's orders. So...decided to hide out there, for a while....have to wait around on the washer to get done, right? Select a few planks....edge them down a bit...didn't like the sloppy T&G they came with, anyway.. Should make a panel...1/4" x 9-1/2" x 12"....glue, clamps and cauls... try adding a clamp to a pair of cauls, while also holding on to the panel...and tightening the c clamps, some cussing was involved.. Needed ends milled. Ripped to width...actually one board, ripped down the center....needed the edges jointed... Until they matched each other... Then use one of these, to help lay out the handle shaped sides... A VERY DULL forstner bit, to burn ( instead of drill..) a starter hole... kept trying to split the top off...we have ways.. PITA to get things set up...blade needed change, anyway... One done...had to glue that split back together.. 2 done. One face was smooth...the other face was...not so smooth....ends were planed down first.. Tear out on the end? Good thing I do not need that much...cut line shows where I cut for length...the other end panel/board? No such issues...which left the handle sides... Knots just don't help much...as for the other side piece? Hmmm, riiiight... Was a messy day, while waiting on the washer.. Waiting on the glue-ups to cure.....will see what happens while waiting on the dryer Stay tuned...
December 21, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok..this little box went to a new home, today... Wife's Pastor usually gets a small project from me, each Christmas time.... From what the Boss said....Pastor LOVED the little box...... As for that tray....panel came out of the clamps this evening.... Was trimmed for square, and ripped for final width....the this Stanley #3, Type 11 went to work....and, since the planks have one side smooth, and the other side rough...this is what the rough face looks like..now.. Smooth face also got a touch up...mainly along the glue lines. So...next time I am on Laundry Detail.... I can figure out what corner joints to use.....Thinking this might look good, sitting in the center of the Dinning Room Table Stay tuned
December 23, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail tonight....means I can go hide in the shop until the washer/dryer is done... All set to dovetail the corners... Pins first, of course? May have to get out the "Big Saw".. Oooops Good thing that will be on the inside....might get the hang of these...someday... Maybe? 2 corners done....had an issue between corners #3 and #4.....#3 became #4... dry fit...all corners done ( towels went into the dryer, too) sooo. Almost there....checking to see IF the sides will fit the base... Ready for a few details..and the glue....THAT should be.....fun Stay tuned..
