Suggestions on leveling a lathe bed....

Featured Replies

So after building the new lathe bench after doing some checking.  I come to find that the head stock of the lathe of course was nicely level.  How ever when I went to put the level on the bed it was off.  I knew the bench was level itself since I took the time out to make sure it was level for the lathe to set on.  How ever the bed track of the lathe is lower on the back side than it is to the working side of the lathe.  I'm not sure what I should do about this in order to get it set right.  Its not off by much but its enough to throw off the tail stock and not be center.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to correct this I'm open to suggestions.  Thanks.

Something sounds strange here. Are you saying that the head stock drive spur point doesn’t line up with the tail stock live center point?

correct but the bed track is not level the hole lathe sits level on the bench how ever the tail stock does not sit level on the track.  Its not a lot but its enough to notice....  The rest of the lathe as I said is level but this is the problem.

You are turning wood with hand held tools so that won't hurt anything.  It has been my experience that wood lathe tail stocks have a lot play in them compared to a metal lathes which have adjustments to correct any play in the tail stocks.  As long as the tail stock and tool rest hold tight I wouldn't worry  with it.

@AndrewB

Post a photo of your tail stock, some lathes have adjustment screws for fore/aft adjustment.

Was it all level prior to placing on the new bench?

Yes it was.

Asking again, do the points of the drive spur and the live center align vertically and horizontally???

That I'm not sure of but I know the headstock is good its just the tailstock thats off.  because of the track on the lathe.  I mean its still usable but not for precise work.  The tailstock just has way too much play to it and does not sit 100 percent level.

There is a twist in the bed. It is possible that the casting is uneven on the bottom of the lathe bed. Usually you would correct with the leveling legs. In this case you will need to use spacers on the tailstock end of the bed to level it. Then as Lew said check to see if centers match. If you do not correct this the cast iron could develop a permanent twist.

That's what I was thinking in the long run.  It is a centeral machinery product after all.  I never had any problem like this with my wen lathes. What I was trying to figure out is if I should weld a thin strip of steel onto the bench or use some sort of adhesive to level it out but then again I would only have to place it on the tail stock I've never seemed to have an issue with the banjo itself.

Is it the same from both ends of the bed?

No welding just use shims and then tighten the bolts and check again

First thing I'd do is unbolt the tails stock end, as @Gerald suggested there might be a twist. If the ways return to level then you'll need to shim between the lathe mounting holes and the bench top.

My old Delta had play in the tail stock- side to side. I had to apply a little pressure to get it in the correct position when tightening.

the tail stock unfortunately doesn't go back to level when tightened down.  It does go off center.  Once I get outside to mount my surge proectors up I'll try and get some photos of the tail stock up against the live center and do that way so you guys can get a better picture of what's going on.  But I think the shims may wind up working.  I just have to get the right size of shim to place under the tailstock.

Check the level of the bed from both ends.

If it's the same then check for adjustments on the tail stock.

Could there possibly be some wood shavings stuck under the tail stock?

No the bed was clear just checked it.....  Here are the screen shots.  In order to center the spurs I did have to bring the tail stock towards me just barely in order to get it centered.  So its not off by a ton but just enough to notice.

In your second, and third photos it looks like something is holding up the right side of the tail stock.

I see a visible gap.

Yea I was holding it up to center the tail stock.  Had no choice on that.
