Frank and Lally wanted to create a work of art that would be a composite of their individual mediums. The concept evolved into a unique, powerful sculpture they named Nechasin. Pronounced, nay-Cha-seen, a Lenape ~ Delaware name meaning 'to be watchful'. This mixed media sculpture is a testament of 18th century culture. Originally Frank imagined a rifleman or other entity that may have carried the sword, but as the idea evolved, Lally's artwork dictated that the piece should be Native American, specifically Delaware. This tribe was known for fierceness and tenacity as warriors, however, they preferred to choose a path of peace when possible. The sculpture incorporates a number of Frank and Lally's pieces, including a rifle, tomahawk, powder horn, and quillwork. Its head and hands are a composite of carved wood overlaid with mosaic bone and sculptured ivory. The body is willow-bough framework covered with cotton batting and homespun linen. RIP Hugh Ray.  His photograph looks so familiar, I wonder if our paths may have crossed?  We have quite a few Ray families here in middle Georgia.  If Hugh was a woodworker, perhaps we crossed paths at one of the Atlanta woodworking shows.

 

On a related issue, I have a copy of my brothers DD214.  Like a good many veterans I know and have known, he never talked much about his service time.  I would like to understand his service better and would appreciate it if someone could tell me what some of it means.  My own DD214 is pretty simple.

 

My week ahead is flooring in the MBR.  I have started putting down laminate flooring, but it takes awhile.  I do have a goal to complete it this week.  That would be flooring, base and shoe moulding, hang closet doors and trim around them and get the furniture back in there.  There are other small jobs that crop up too; today I need to trim a drawer in the kitchen island; tomorrow I have a dental appointment and will take the time to run a dozen errands while I am out and about.

 

And the forecast is calling for some rain!  We need some and will welcome a couple soakers if we get it.

Today is Phyllis' birthday. 72 years ago she entered this world. I'm grateful to have shared the last 49+ years of that.

Since most of the good eating places have re opened, we'll be celebrating with a meal at her favorite Italian place. She'll probably have the Italian Seafood Stew. Maybe we can get a candle on her Tiramisu.

Busy weekend but little woodworking.  My son messages me this morning. Wants to know if I have a metal lathe.  Nope. Can you get one?  Maybe what size?  Full size picture he sends me.  Yeah I got 6K floating around.

Did absolutely NOTHING over the weekend.  TOO SMOKEY.   I picked up a new disc sander.  Turns out not the best for what I needed.  Got my new recording camera so I tested that out.  Not too shabby for a knock off go pro I'm happy with it at least for now it will do what I need it to do for now at least.   Waiting on a bunch of orders for this week coming in.  EWT Rougher today cook woods tomorrow 6 bowl blanks so I'll be busy.  Tuesday my EWT Midsized finisher gets here.  Can't wait.  I think you can turn metal on a wood lathe LOL just need carbide tools.  I haven't dived into that research as of yet but I'm going to be researching it myself.  I think all ya need are the carbide tips for that.

Believe it or not @AndrewB the smoke from the fires out your way can be smelled in the air here in S.E. WI..

And yes with the proper tooling you can do metal turning/spinning on a wood lathe.

OOOOOOOOOOF if that can be done I'm going to have to give that a try at some point in the future.  Lots of projects with that... ESPECIALLY metal pens.

Gene, Happy Birthday to Phyllis, and congratulations to the time you have had together.  Best wishes for your years to come.  Cherish the time you have with her.  I had 44 years with my Denise.  Lost her on Christmas Eve last year.

Happy Birthday Denise! I echo Tom's sentiment. I wake up every morning intent on being worthy of Karen, my wife of 49 years. I am not there yet.

 A little late, but  hope Phyllis had a great birthday. You mean she has put up with you for over 49 years ?

Thanks, Al. She had a good Birthday. Went out for a nice meal. All her siblings (6) and, our sons (2) called her. And, we got good news about a house we wanted. Plus, she found a place to buy some locally made Sake that she'd been searching for ever since the maker, a Sake Master from Japan, started up here in AZ.

All in all, a great day.

What an embarrassing mistake. My, belated, birthday wishes were meant for Gene's wife Phyllis. But I had you and your Denise in mind at the time. It kind of stuck with me my friend.
