Postal employees are federal employees as they work for the government, but their pay is funded entirely by the post office funds.  It is a self sustaining branch of the federal government.  I worked

Well, Ron.  The facts are that the Post Office has not had a bailout since 1971.  They keep asking for a line of credit to get ahead, but Congress has refused every time.  There has NEVER been a bailo

Case in point, I assume you still haven't receiver my mailed correspondence. I think tomorrow it will be a week. I would bet a private carrier would have had it there in 2 days.

Probably not for 45¢, though.

Hmmm I shipped a package to someone for about 15 dollars and it was there the next day through a private company.

Hmm.  I placed an order for some hinges with Hardware Source in CA a couple weeks ago.  Shipped UPS.  The initial notice from HS said I would receive it on Friday, the first notice from UPS said one day delay I would get it Monday.  On Monday it said one day delay, you will get it Tuesday.  I did get it on Tuesday.  And that shipping was expensive.

You know what befuddles me Cal, when I order something and it comes via FedEx, I'll watch the tracking, the danged package gets about one city away from me at their reception facility, then it shoots back out to a city farther away from me then it gets delivered.

We live about 100 miles or so north of Phoenix. A neighboring city is 26 miles north. I mailed an envelope sized pkg to that neighboring city and, it went to Phoenix before coming back to the recipient. That was a couple years ago. Today, FedEx, UPS and the USPS are blaming their latenesses on Covid. -_-

A buddy of mine ships a lot internationally and has some sort of arrangement with E Bay for shipping. His shipments get delivered an a week or less, anywhere in the world. He used to use DHL but, they got too expensive. He got similar times with them.

It's only my opinion, but it seems to me that the large parcel carriers (Fedex, UPS, and maybe USPS) have sold their souls to the large on line shippers (UPS (maybe USPS) to Amazon, Fedex to Walmart, and other combinations of which I'm unaware) and that left us mere mortals hanging in the wind.....both in delivery times and the pricing. The discounts the large companies get come back to the rest of us paying more (sez me). I'm not griping, or at lest I don't think I am....but it's the way things work anymore.

LMFAO same thing happens to me.  Usually with FEDex though the Final Delivery distribution center for me is in DuPont.  Over 20 miles away.  How ever I get things through UPS even with the delays that theyve had and what not the local distribution for them is about 5 miles from me.

Same thing with USPS here. Mail an in town letter, it goes to Milwaukee then gets sorted and sent back.

USPS does that here to send a mail out for Oly it goes to Tacoma and then comes back to town..  Total waste of time.

At the USPS, they say they're not a governmental agency, but the same mentality...or lack thereof, seems to prevail at it's higher levels.

You are correct (IMHO) andI believe that to be their biggest problem.

I must say that I use Amazon a lot. Being a Prime member a high % of my purchases are prompt and generally cheaper. There is no browsing a store to find what you want only to find they don't have it or have it in your size. We buy general things such a laundry detergent and coffee there, using a subscription service to have scheduled delivery at what ever interval we choose. It just arrives on our doorstep. Delivery is generally free and arrives when they say it will. We generally only buy perishables such as meat, milk, condiments and bread at the grocery with trips there only as needed. I don't, but my wife does take medications and she gets her prescriptions filled at the counter. Maybe I am just fortunate but I have zero issues with private carrier shipments at all.

I may have been misunderstood or didn't explain my opinion as well as I should have. We buy a huge amount of stuff on line, and that is mostly Amazon. Delivery from all of these outfits (including Walmart) is very good. But when I send something out it's both expensive, and the delivery (especially with USPS, which is what I use the most) seems to take a back seat to everything else. My observation is that the big shippers get all the perks, the rest of us are second class citizens.

Spot on, and have that from the inside of USPS friends I know.
