Popular Post difalkner Posted July 28, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted July 28, 2020 Those are T-slot holes to bolt a vise or fixture to the base. Usually there are bolt holes at the rear to fasten the base to a workbench. David HARO50, Gunny, Cal and 2 others 4 1 Quote

This came up when a customer at work asked to explain how to set one up out of the box. I never have used them, or had a need. Doesn't mean I won't though. FlGatorwood, Cal and p_toad 3 Quote
FlGatorwood Posted July 28, 2020 Report Posted July 28, 2020 Absolutely nothing done in the shop this weekend. It rain all weekend resulting from Hurricane Hanna. We got over 4 inches of rain. Now, I need to mow. Went today to get my hearing test, first time in 13 years. Nothing measurable to report there. Played checkers, chess and connect 4 with the grandchildren and they had fun. My brain is fried. My 13 year old grandson is a whiz at all of them. Gee, Gerald, I thought you were older than that. After spending a couple years out of high school, I served from 1968 to 1972 in the Navy. @lew, you were stationed at NAS Oceana? I am surprised that you were not sent to "Nam". And, you must have done 2 year active with 4 years reserves. Close? Cal, Gunny, p_toad and 1 other 4 Quote

When I went in for branch training Nam was cycling down and no need for officers so I did ADT only. When I got home there was no unit within 90 miles with my MOS so did 8 years ready reserve. The whole deal left me with mixed feelings after all that tng but then there is that little note I saw a few years ago " I signed over my life to them to do whatever" They just did not get to my ticket. FlGatorwood Posted July 29, 2020 Report Posted July 29, 2020 (edited) The day I turned 20 years old, I received an overstuffed envelope from President Johnson inviting me/rather demanding that I come enjoy their food, travel with them and wear the latest fashion wear. It was a good ride. Now, the VA won't test me for hearing, denies that I may have been exposed to Agent Orange but I am very much alive, get much better service from private medical providers and my insurance pays my bills. Of course, I pay about $740 per month for federal employee insurance plus Medicare A+B. At the VA, they take my insurance plus send me a bill for $50. Why? In 1966 the USS Constellation was transferred from the east coast to the west coast for Westpac duty to Vietnam. VA-65 was assigned to the Connie for that deployment. So I was able enjoy cruises in the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club. In 1963 the Navy had a program that if you enlisted while you were 17, you would be discharged on your 21st birthday (Kidde Cruiser). I still had a 3 year reserve obligation but because I was an airdale and the closest reserve unit was a couple of hours away, I did not need to go there. Popular Post FlGatorwood Posted July 29, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted July 29, 2020 I did remember that you were with VA 65 which flew A-6's. We had VA-165 on board the USS America in 1970 when we made a cruise around the world and spent a few months in the notorious Tonkin Gulf. Thank you, Lew for your service. p_toad, HARO50, Cal and 3 others 6 Quote
Gunny Posted July 29, 2020 Report Posted July 29, 2020 Off to the steel market this morning to get a 20 ft piece of 1/8 inch 2 inch square pipe. Need this last piece of the puzzle to make my light pole for back yard. Not really a woodworking project but hey it is a project I need done and am off today so getting started is the first part. Kinda got to get started I already ordered the pipe and paid for it. After I did they tell me I cannot cut the pipe on site. Okay, so I strap it to the side of my truck and go home. Minor problem. Really dumb though, why would I pay $10 to cut it? I own all the tools to do that including a cordless sawsall. Company policy, yeah I have some choice words about that phrase. p_toad, Larry Buskirk, Cal and 2 others 4 1 Quote

Then you just stop in the road out front and cut it. If necessary give them the big picture. p_toad, Cal, Gunny and 3 others 6 Quote

He watched as I strapped the entire 20 ft length to my truck and added red flags front and back. Then pulled away. Drove home in the rain no issues. Most people use a trailer but for one piece why go through all that. Larry Buskirk, HARO50, p_toad and 4 others 7 Quote
Larry Buskirk Posted July 29, 2020 Report Posted July 29, 2020 ...Wish I would have gotten a photo when the neighbor drove in with... an 8' X 10' metal shed strapped to the back of his Chevy Express van. He lifted it up onto one of those cargo shelves that go into a Reese receiver. That was only part of that load. HARO50, p_toad, Gunny and 2 others 1 1 1 2 Quote
Popular Post Gunny Posted July 29, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted July 29, 2020 Attic fan motor went bad. Had to take in down to get at fan blade. Previous owner just shoved it up there with couple brackets against a 2x4. No, that is not going to work for me. Made a plate to mount it to, routed against the fan shell so it is nice and smooth. Then taped the edges to keep the air from going wrong place. Finally added some paint, even painted the fan blades. Went outside and put in a vinyl vent. Something the crew that did the siding should have done. Certainly paid enough for it years ago. Just to be sure added a new thermostat as well. Gerald, Cal, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post Gunny Posted July 30, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted July 30, 2020 Not woodworking but part of a project to light up last dark corner of my backyard. This bearing assembly was in a Toyota Corolla. Now it is modified to be a swivel mount for a 14 ft light pole. Using 2 inch square pipe 3/16 thick. That should hold up well. Still working on the rest of the brackets to mount to wall. Then I can put siding back on. Thankfully I used screws to attach the vinyl siding. Easy to remove and do my work. Already built extra support inside studs for these braces. Pays to think ahead. Cal, FlGatorwood, p_toad and 3 others 6 Quote

Smallpatch Posted July 31, 2020 Report Posted July 31, 2020 Hey Gun,,, explain why you could not cut the pipe on site! I do live in Texas and I still strap long stuff under my pickup. The 3/4" black pipe comes in 24 foot lengths. I wired three lengths under pickup and brought it home. I cut and thread it for my pipe clamps. Cal, HARO50 and FlGatorwood 3 Quote

Have plenty of clearance. When I go back for 2 more pieces may try that out and see how it works. Thanks for the tip. Cal, FlGatorwood and HARO50 3 Quote
Smallpatch Posted August 1, 2020 Report Posted August 1, 2020 This has been standard practice ever since I can remember. It was actually safer for over hang past the back of a pickup use to be 4 foot ..Probably off a little since it has been years since I even thought about. FlGatorwood and HARO50 2 Quote
