If your house was built before the 1830s, then it’s almost certain to be a timber frame home. An easy way to tell is to go into the basement or attic where the timbers are still visible. There you’ll find thick, usually hand-hewn, beams of locally grown timbers. The frame is completely self-sufficient unlike other forms of framing that require cross-bracing or sheathing to add racking strength and rigidity to the frame." Source: The Craftsman Blog
June 15, 20206 yr Popular Post Got a spalted maple blank mounted on the lathe. It has been mocking me for over a year as I walked by the box of usable turning pieces. I have an idea but not sure of the entire plan just yet.
June 15, 20206 yr Had rain this weekend kept me from making forms for some concrete work. Got started on a finishing bench instead.
June 15, 20206 yr Popular Post Looks like I’ll be building stock this week. I had a good weekend in my Etsy store.
June 15, 20206 yr Popular Post Son and family left yesterday. The grands had been with us a week. Their parents came up Friday. We had a great time but, I'll be glad to get back in the shop. Still breaking down slabs of rough walnut. These three little bed side tables take more material than one might think. There is a lot of waste that will be used for later projects.
June 15, 20206 yr Working in two directions. Need to finish the second turn and a=sanding on a bunch of bowls for one. Second will come either rough turning or complete turning on the logs I have in yard, drive and shop. Oh boy that last sentence did not sound like fun.
June 15, 20206 yr Popular Post If it makes you feel any better I've got to plan out a shop space underneath an non used section of my carport and figure out how many 2x4s I will need for wall studs and how much plyboard I will need for walls. At least wiring will be easy compared to the rest of it. That will hopefully be happening at some point this summer.

June 16, 20206 yr Popular Post ...What have I been up to? I decided to take a little break from "Mowing, Mowing, Mowing... I had to clear out the overgrowth then proceeded to try to remember how to put something back together that I was given a couple of years back after a tree had fallen on it. So without further ado... And the major damage repaired. So tomorrows another day. I'll be working on getting the "Dutch" style doors, and the greenhouse panels installed.

June 16, 20206 yr Popular Post Still working on the band saw box, but about to start a pen-demic. I have 3 ready for assembly and 17 more to ream and drill down to the tubes, then turn. Then I need to make a box for daughter-in-law to hold her 4 roserys (sorry I can't spell tonight). Anyway, solid cedar with dividers of pecan. Not sure what else I have to get done before I start on the house. Not much.

Our anniversary is today (#41). We are headed up to Atlanta this morning to buy a truck, I sure did not want to do that - but, I feel the need to Weather is expected to be most cooperative today, into the upper 70's! So, we plan to grill out tonight. For the week ahead, there are several people that want to look at/hopefully buy my old Dakota; and in the house - painting, painting and some additional painting.

June 16, 20206 yr Popular Post Worked on trimming some edge banding. Getting a handle on the hand plane thing. Used my HF special, once sharpened it seems to work well. Results? Might get a passing grade from @steven newman Edited June 16, 20206 yr by Gunny

June 17, 20206 yr Popular Post Got a package this evening. Big Thank You to @p_toad for this great gift and @John Morris for getting it sent my way. After a tough day working through wiring diagrams and repairing 27 wires in a burnt harness this lifted my spirits up. Didn't sharpen the blade yet. It still was pretty good for a test run on some white oak. Amazing the difference in heft verses my HF special. Took me couple runs to get it adjusted it down to just a tad off the top setting. Even had a space for it in my drawer.
June 17, 20206 yr Popular Post Oh, Geez. I read right through those post and the half brain cell didn't fire. Congratulations, Steven on being a great grandfather. They are so special. Congratulations, Cal on your anniversary. And, happy belated birthday to your wife. It's hard to believe that she would put up with you that long.
