John--  and the rest of us, BTW

We ALL have a first aid kit IN THE SHOP & HANDY ??  Yes??

Since many of us old farts are on blood thinners we WILL bleed more profusely then when we were younger.

Clean gauze & rubber tourniquet.

Also, some where in the back of my mind there is(was) a product that was used in the field to control/stop blood loss.

Any body remember the name & procedure for use?

Doesn't liquid seep around the edge of blue tape. I think it's the green tape that the edge "seals" with liquid to contain it.

I use black electric tape.  The plastic has some stretch to it and wraps better giving a good seal.

Styptic powder. Better known as the "Styptic pencil" form used along with the old safety razors, especially by those of us who were "all thumbs"!

Called Blood Stop or also available as Stop Blood. Styptic would not stop blood from wounds.

Thanks for being the object lesson; hope we all benefit from your pain.

Never a horse couldn't be rode, never a cowboy couldn't be throwd

That kinda sums up life, iff’n I ever get to making some signs on the scroll saw, I may have to borrow that one.

+1 on the electrical tape. Probably due to always having a supply of it since I got out of the voke school in 78. Generally don’t put anything under it, does make it self known when arriving home (or medical facility depending on seriousness of wound), and removing of tape. My left hand has hated my right hand since Ive been 16. Right hand is usually in possession of weapon, and left hand is usually the victim.

Am really sorry you got hurt. :(

Not being critical but the piece looks way too small (short) to run across a jointer and the blade was set way too high taking too much of a cut. For me, the minimum length is 12 inches (I'm a little nervous with that :ChinScratch:), and I set the blade to cut at 1/64th inch. I can take many safe passes with ease. :OldManSmiley:

All our work trucks have these on board:

The kits are expensive, you can probably go out and purchase similar items separately for half the cost of the kits. If I could only afford two items from those kits, I'd want the tourniquet and the Hemastatic gauze that contains blood clotting chemicals within the gauze.

We had a Stop the Bleed volunteer come to our work place, and go over the use of these items. It was an eye opener for sure, did you know most of the kids at the Sandy Hook shooting could have been saved if the teachers or staff onsite knew how to "stop the bleed".

I am thinking about having one in our home as well, and even in our car, you never know when you come upon an accident on the road and could possibly save a life.

In our class we learned how to identify cuts, and in the case of severe trauma, missing limbs, wide open gashes and portions of body and flesh completely missing, we learned how to identify where the blood is most likely coming from, and where to reach in and pinch the vein or artery, and how to apply a tourniquet, and also how to pack a wide open hole or gash.

I learned much of this in the Army, but it was a great refresher for me.

John Moody, so sorry this happened, I have not chimed in here much cuz I was included on the text messages via cell phones between Ron, John and myself, so I was all caught up on this.

I hope you are doing better John, my heart hurt when I saw those images come across my cell phone, that morning, I was working in the field, and clicked on the chat, and saw the photos, and I was concerned.

By the way John, showed the images to my buddies at work same day, they all wish you the best in your recovery too. And guys being guys, they were pretty impressed with the gore, hey, what can I say. :) Just glad you get to keep your digits man. Love ya big guy!

That'll buff right out! ;)

Seriously though, that's a scary accident, so glad for you that it wasn't worse and I hope you heal well and have full use of those fingers again and can enjoy shop time.

Wooden parts that get chewed are annoying, but not life-impacting. Body parts are however, please look after yourself to give yourself the best chance of recovering well.
