April 8, 20206 yr Popular Post Please, Al, please post the one of spalted wood. Do I need to get down on one knee? I may have to call a tow truck to get back up but I'll do it if you want.
April 9, 20206 yr Al I wouldn't be able to tell you which one I would like the best because I like them all. Great Job!!

The wood is from a tree that was downed on my property. Hope you like it. The photo with the rose pedals shows the pedals from our 25th wedding anniversary . We renewed our vows at that time. April 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Thank you, Al. That is truly incredible. And, the craftsmanship is superb. Now, I wish to know, if you'll part with trade secrets. (Please be careful as others may be watching.) I wish to know how to cut out the center. It appears as if you used a bandsaw but I can't find an entry mark. And, I like the little tray support on the right side of the box. And, I am guessing that you used the table saw to shape the lid for those angles and to make the dado around the bottom. Close? Thank you for posting and sharing another absolutely beautiful box.
April 11, 20206 yr Author Popular Post No secrets here Steve. You described the process pretty well. The entry cut was on the back of the box. I glued the cut closed and clamped it tightly. The cut virtually disappeared. Every joint on this box is no more than a butt joint. Every cut was made with the TS and/or BS. It couldn't get any simpler. Everything from the stump to the finished box. Edited April 11, 20206 yr by Al B
April 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Thank you Al for posting those pics up, it is most beautiful. And thanks for sharing the how-to also.
April 11, 20206 yr Thank you, Al. I'll be right up front. I am going to steal the design. That is incredible. Mine will be made of cedar, I hope. Seem to be having some difficulty with cedar. I hope it is not a build of allergies to it. I have too much cedar to use. Maybe, I'll have a lumber sale. Thank you, again, Al.
April 12, 20206 yr Author Popular Post It's just a small box Steve. I sized it according to what material was salvageable. Everything was cut 3/8" thick except the top which, ended up about about 1/6" short of the 3/4" I had hoped to get. The box measures 5 1/4"w X 6 1/4"L X 3 1/8" deep not including the top. What type of cedar do you have, Red, white, aromatic ? Working with cedar did cause respiratory issues for me. Definitely recommend wearing a mask. Edited April 12, 20206 yr by Al B
April 12, 20206 yr Popular Post Thank you, Al. That is a very nice box and the measurements are very helpful. Don't be surprised that several members here and some who are not members may steal the design and make their own. We may watch Craigslist and etsy to see how many show up this summer or fall in time for Christmas. When I use cedar, I always wear a mask. I need to purchase new canisters. Thanks for reminding me. And, thanks for sharing all the information. Happy Easter to you.
May 13, 20206 yr Author Popular Post I dug thru my firewood scraps and using what was left of the birch tree, This is what I came up with. Nothing fancy, but it did give me something to do in the shop. The two pieces you see in the rear corners were spacers I used to locate the divider. My daughter liked them, so I left them in the box, but they're not glued. The finish is high gloss varathane. I should not have applied the finish to the bark on the front because it darkened the natural look of the birch, even though the finish is a clear finish. Edited May 13, 20206 yr by Al B
