Dado Blades, wood

When I built the Twin Tablesaw I had in mind to learn to do box joints and so having the extra saw always set up for 1/4" seemed like a good idea.  Since it is always 1/4 I can use it for other things.  That said I have yet to get my box joint jig made.  But it has been nice to make and repair quite a few drawers.  Under 1/4 inch I do what most do, I pass then a second to make it 3/16 or whatever needs be.

I've never used a Craftsman dado set, but back in the day when they marketed those tools under the Krome Edge label, they were very well made, quality tooling. I still have a set of taps/dies from the

There's quite a bit of difference between those sets. The 508 will have chippers with 4 teeth on each one, and the outer blades will have 28 teeth (I think). It also will have 6 chippers and shims to adjust the width as needed. The 208 has chippers with 2 teeth on each one, and the outer blades will have 24 teeth ( again, I think....they may have changed things). It has fewer chippers, with 1/8" spacers for the wider cuts; this seems to be the route many of the sets have taken....to reduce costs I guess. The chippers included with the 208 have teeth that are 1/4" wide, so they span the across a spacer when they are used The "s" addition to the 208 set indicates the anti kickback shoulders have been modified somewhat to work better with the Sawstop saws. Those shoulders prevent the brake from digging into the blade as designed. I'm not sure if the 508 has that feature; I know my 508 set does, because after the first sharpening they ground those shoulders off!

I use the Freud SD606 Dial-a-Width dado set.  It is basically a 6" stacked dado set, except the outer cutter is a wobble blade with a center hub that is adjustable in, I believe, .004" increments.  I've had it for several years and it has served me well.  I don't know if they still make it.  It also came in an 8" version, which I think was the SD808.

Those are 8" aren't they? If so, why?

No real reason. 10" table saw so I thought, why not?

I have 6" dado blades now.

Any reason why I should get the 6" compared to 8"?

Generally speaking folks use the 6" sets on saws that might have a little less power.

Also depends on the size of the opening for the table saw dado insert. Of course you could make your own.

I did and made extra. Thankfully both saws are same model.:D

My old saws all use the same stacked dado set, but all 3 have different sized inserts.

Price for one reason. I had  a nice 8" from Tenryu but, it seemed to make the Shopsmith complain. it was HEAVY! At any rate, I'd never need to plow the depth the 8" was capable of.

A little bit of math on 6" comparison to 8" or 10".  The larger the blade, the faster the outer rim of the blade is traveling through the wood.  Since most saws spin at the same rpm, the smaller blade is spinning at the same rate of the bigger blade  But, consider the circumference and that means the larger circumference is traveling through wood and space at a faster rate.  This would burden some saws which means you have to slow down the feed rate of the stock.

Gator, I don't have one, but isn't the Shopsmith dado set a 6" ?

Little late to reply but I can’t speak highly enough of Infinity Tools.

I used a Freud set for a year or so and it was fine but didn’t have very much carbide on the teeth. This means less resharpenings. I was leaning towards a Forrest dado set when a friend recommended Infinity. I’ve been hooked since. It seems to me that the big difference between higher and lower end sets is the amount of carbide. I got 6 re-sharpenings out of my Freud. I’m up to 12 on the Infinity and easily have 10 more before it will need replacing. It’s often on sale, especially this time of year, and comes with the usual 1/8” thick chipper blades as well as a 1/16” and 3/32” chipper and shims. 6 teeth on the chippers.

Yes, sir.  That is what they sell for the SS.  Here's the link.  https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/ms_carbidedadostackedset.htm

And, the last I knew, they are made by Amana.  Too much for my pocketbook.

Mine too. What I don't understand, referencing your post about rim speed, why is the Shopsmith dado setting lower than the saw setting. On a cross grain cut I get smoother cuts and less backside chip out somewhere in between.

I think JPG explained that one day on the Shopsmith forums.  But, I can't find it now.  Not smart enough anymore.  :BangingHead:

Now I am broke and dumb.

Found it. You asked the question. The gist of JPG's answer seemed to be, like most operations, let the tool tell you the speed.

Wow.  That was in 2012.  Thanks, Gene.

UpDate:

I got the Freud 8" X 24T Super Dado set (SD508) today. I had to go out and try all of the blades put on at once. Man do they cut nice. I know I only made 3 dado cuts right now but they are nice smooth cuts. I have a old (used to be in a school) Powermatic saw with a 220v 3hp motor. The table saw handled the 8" blades just fine. Thought I would try the blades out since I won't be able to for awhile. Getting Basal joint surgery Friday. So I'll be out of the shop for about 3 or 4 months. :(

The only thing I'm not happy with is FedEx. They delivered the blades @ 6:17pm and the left it out by the mail box post with a door tag stuck on the mail box. My house is about 100' or more away from the road. I live on a busy highway and the $170 dollar blades are laying on the ground. :PullingHair: Left a complaint with FedEx along with leaving a complaint with the seller not to use FedEx again.

I had a experience with FedEx week before last. Had a pick up ready at the front door and they said it was not ready when they came by . Well yes I called and gave them a UPDATE on package ready . and about a month ago they dropped a dorm fridge at my door so we could not open the door and that package was not even for us. So yeah not too happy with those people.

Hope all works well with your surgery.
