October 24, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Lets see...glue was spread...clamps applied...cussing was fierce... Top was glued and screwed in place...added 2 LONG clamps later.. Hammer to "adjust" the fits... Needed to move this mess aside...and trim the back panel a smidge,, Stanley #5 didn't seem to mind...then, once it did fit.. I nailed it down...then stand the entire mess up.. So my fat body can get past this thing. Letting this sit a day, or so....then start on a base, and then a door... Stay tuned..
October 25, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Do NOT brush any "whiskers" off of the edge of plywood, while running a plane along that edge.....had to pull a splinter out of my left thumb Question now is....plywood panel, or solid Ash panel in the door..... Should be "fun" building the base for around the bottom of this case....will see how the miter joints work out....among other things..

October 27, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Suppose I had better get a little bit done? Cleaned in the vise, so it won't walk away...cleaned up the side, and the dovetails.. Flip over, and do the other side of the cabinet...then the bottom.. Nasty looking, but I need a flat place to add the feet...set up the Cordless Mitre saw.. With a helping hand...used this and the cut-off, to check the cut... Not too hateful...cut the other short section, and the long section for the front...then swung the saw to the other 45 spot.. Then cut a few blocks for the base to sit on....and cut the front to shape.. Glued and clamped the sides together. Once the glue is done...I'll cut a profile, using that pattern. Counter bored screws to attach to the case.. So...right now, I am waiting on glue to dry...again...just puttering along Stay tuned

October 28, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Replaced the bandsaw blade...Craftsman 1/4" x 80", 6 tpi....and just had to test it out.. so... Got both of these done... And added a glue block to the front.. Waiting on the glue...again...not too bad for a Monday...
October 30, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok, found the 3/8" counter-bore bit... So..despite a sore thumb.. I set up the H-F Drill Press, and a sanding drum... Had counter-bores to do... For the mounting holes...and a few to reinforce glue joints.. And then pilot holes, once I found a correct sized bit....used the drill press, so things stayed put. First "foot" installed. After the other side was installed, had a problem show up.. One corner or the other, didn't want to close up..F clamp didn't have enough "horsepower" but a pipe clamp worked just fine. Test drive of the router bit, was a hair too deep...adjusted, and try again.. A little better...need plugs made ( Ash? Walnut?) routing along the front had a problem...2 hands to hold the router + one hand to hold the case still? We have ways.. Then, any and all burn marks were sanded away....tested to see IF all four feet sit flat on the bench...and, of course, they didn't....one foot was a bit .."off"...hand plane to adjust... Sits without any rocking, now. Details? Nice, tight miter joints. So, since that thumb is now thumping, time to stop for the day....better living, through improved Chemistry? When the thumb allows, next time will be cutting parts for the door.... Stay tuned..
October 31, 20196 yr Author Ok...got that plank of Ash to the shop, today...did a bit of measuring....decided I needed 24" long blanks...out of a 8-9' 1 x 6 plank...made a mark.. And knifed the line. Opened the vise enough to hold the board still.. Circled is the cut line...needed the trash can to hold the other end up.. Rough cut to length will square the ends later...needed two pieces.. here is the first. Gave the Atkins No. 65 a go...meh...took a bit too long...there was also a problem with one edge of these boards.. Just a bit wavy? Decided to joint the "good" edges first.. Wanted a good, straight edge, so I could do both bad edges at once...first, gap check on the non-wavy edges.. Lay these back on the bench, while I set up a few things.. Hmmm, this might take a while...clamp these two together, with the jointed edges down, and flush with each other...which left.. Handsome, ain't it? The No. 6 was still set up for fine shavings....set it aside, and called in the rougher bunch.. Also checked with the metal ruler...almost there.. That should do...move things around a bit...check the edges for gaps...before the glue goes on... A tiny piece was chipped out...will soon be gone...Then clamps, glue and cauls.. "Inside"? Outside? Letting this sit a day...then will get out the "Woodpecker" Speed Square... So I can square the ends. have to see what I have for bread board edges...and allow for them. width SHOULD be fine... Was a busy afternoon.. ya think? Stay tuned...
November 1, 20196 yr Author Clamps came off, today...C clamps have been hung out.. Needed to trim the ends, a bit... Cut line, and a guide line..clamp the saw guide in place.. Get out the trim saw, and make a cut.. Trim saw? 6" saw....turn the panel end for end..and make another cut....allowing for the bread board ends... Then set up to flatten the panel.. And got a Cardio Workout...for a while....plane? Stanley No. 5-1/2 Jumbo Jack, Type 17. Ran out of get-up & go before this side was done....maybe tomorrow? Bread boards will use a Tongue & Groove joint... Stay tuned

November 4, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok...Between errands today...got in two work sessions in the shop...mainly to flatten the panel.. This was simply smoothing the rough sawn stuff...decided to rotate the panel 90 degrees, and try a different (lighter) plane.. And go across the grain, used the side of the plane to check for the high spots.. Circled areas are showing the low spots...needed to plane away until there were no longer any low spots... Flat, now. Need to set it aside for a day or two...so I added a caul at each end, to keep things flat... Let it sit here, out of the way....and cut a few blanks... Cross cut, then rip twice...rail blanks.. Rip twice, to make the blanks for the stiles...found an extra tape measure, as the other FOUR in the shop have gone AWOL... Be good enough for rough cuts...then a bit of time at the bandsaw (after a full hour of hand plane work, wasn't up to hand saw rip cuts) 2 rails, 2 stiles. Need to clamp each pair into the vise, and S4S all four parts....then see about some grooves, and Mortise & Tenon the corners....then size the panel to the frame, and then make it a raised panel... Stay tuned, the cussing is just getting started.....
November 4, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Going to be a smaller version of this door... latest one, will be a 12"wide, by 24" tall door...one in this picture was for a Step Back Cupboard
