September 27, 20196 yr Popular Post Ok..box #2 is started...double and triple checked the saw set up... Trying to cut both boards at the same time, and getting them both in the middle usual luck.. "Missed it by that much, Chief" needed a tad off of one end...then over to the vise.. That #3 was made about 1905, or so..still works. Jointed all the edges until they matched, then Then shoot the end grain until they matched...that is two boards sitting there...laid out all four parts.. And found bar code stickers on a few boards...33 planed those off. Set all but one side piece aside, for now..Dug up the layout toys.. Bevel gauge set to the dovetail angle I use. Combo square and marking gauge set to the thickness of the boards, pencil for marking things up, and something to cut "knife walls" have the board sitting a bit high in the vise, easier to mark things. And, remember to always make where the waste is... Once all the marking out is done, I lower the board down in the vise... Wax up the saw...we have work to do... Just a little bit.. Then set up a chopping station..nothing fancy.. Chop 1/2 way down, and leave a small tab out on the end ( to support things) and then flip the board over That wide pin? ( yes, I do pins first ) is where I hope to split the lid off from the box.. I then use these pins to mark out for the tails...then use the bandsaw to make a few cuts... I use the bandsaw, so I can SEE the cuts better, and stay on the waste side of the lines. The more of each line I leave, the tighter the joint should be..cchopped the waste out, and tried a dry fit.. been awhile, might be out of practice? Ok...rinse, repeat...and get corner #2 done the same way... So, two corners done, 2 to go...then Uncle Charles hit...left hand cramped up, and the back of the knees....guess it be quitting time, in the shop. About 2 hours, in two sessions, today. Stay tuned...

October 1, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Two different work sessions...was laid up in-between...good thing the shop was closed Monday...was waiting for a stone or two to pass.... Ok...first work session was getting the other 2 corners done... Circle shows the only gap, and it will close up during the glue up... Ever have a work day you just had to stop, because of Charlie Horses in the feet..? Happened today... First off, tear down the Stanley 45... Remove those long rods, and re-assemble things with the short rods... Put the extras back in the case. set up a jig, and plow 8 grooves.. making noodles? Using a very simple jig, block of wood back stop, with 2 screws to keep it there...and a single screw on each end. got the top and bottom grooves done...needed to set up for the lid's groove. remember that one wide tail? That is where a groove will go...so I can split off the lid, and leave a dust seal/lip around on the inside..Outside groove will off-set towards the bottom of the box.. Then a 5 minute break, while I reset the 45, again..then plough 4 grooves.. All 4 sides get these grooves. Needed a dry fit, to make sure they all line up...and to check the plywood for size...bandsaw to cut the plywood to size, had to joint a rough edge.. Then try both in the grooves... Everything fits? Fancier plywood into the "top" groove, spread some Elmer's and then a forest of clamps showed up Along with the cramps in the feet, WHILE I was getting the clamps on....and getting the next clamp down from the rack...10 clamps? Intend to let this mess sit overnight....if the feet stop the cramping, I might sweep the Dungeon Shop... Looks like it was a busy day...and, that shop fan didn't help much... Stay tuned...maybe tomorrow, I can "pop the top" of this box...
October 2, 20196 yr Here I thought "cramps" were just the British term for "clamps." See definition #2 https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/cramp ‘Clamping dovetails is not easy but I have found that it is possible to glue them up without cramps at all.’ Edited October 2, 20196 yr by kmealy
October 2, 20196 yr Popular Post That really wore me out. Just setting the plane up once is enough Steve, but you are like the energizer bunny. you just keep going and going and going. By the way that box is really coming together good. @steven newman I forgot to tell you my son swears pickle juice will relieve cramps and yes he has used it. Edited October 2, 20196 yr by Gerald
October 2, 20196 yr Popular Post Great job. Potassium may help with the cramps. I take 100 mg daily to keep away "Charley" and draws in my feet. I have neuropathy from diabetes and most mornings I have cramps. So, I have upped my daily intake of potassium for a few days. The body does not store potassium but discards any excess especially if you sweat. Also, with all your woodworking experience, I am sure you know this, but posting it for those who are watching and may not know. I used sanding dust and mix it into the glue to hide gaps that are small. Makes a real difference. Staining doesn't work very well, but most everything else does. Thanks, Steve. It's always a pleasure to see your craftmanship in pictures.
October 2, 20196 yr yeah, it's off (and on) topic... i eat mustard when i get leg cramps. The only thing apparently in common with the pickle is the vinegar, so maybe that's the secret.
October 3, 20196 yr Author Popular Post I prefer me Tonic & Gin.....right now, I need to make a run to the store....brushes and things....clamps ( Cramps) are all hung up.. Box came out looking a bit...dirty Took a bit of sanding, and a few other items....finally laid out where the outside groove went.. Reset the marking gauge to those two lines...reset the 45 to cut in the lines.. Might as well start on this end....vise was leaving dirty stuff from the jaws... After a pass or two, I took the backsaw, and made "relief cuts" where the cutter comes out at the end...supposed to keep blowouts at bay...maybe. Set the box on the bench, to do the long side, next..plan was to just work my way around all the sides.. The Cam Rest keeps the plane from tipping. Then on around.. Got to the last end....and then started with the knife, to slice off the top..right where the two open squares are....just connect the dots Then the fitting of the lid began....again, the "lip" was too fat...better than no lip, though...Adjusted the 45, and removed the excess "lip" Finally, got the lid to fit...whew... Almost...had one spot needing a wee bit more removed....got that done, got out the "tool box"... And set about adding hardware... Hinges and corner brasses...I soon got tired of the "Precision Screwdrivers" ground the swivel head off of the larger of the two, and chucked it up it the drill....Then made a small drill bit out of a nail that was long enough to also chuck into the drill....added handles...as I just worked my way around the box ( while sitting on my...shop stool..) handle is below the lid. then a latch.. While hitting a few high spots with the Stanley 60-1/2 block plane,,,kind of cramped for the #3 plane... Then finish up the other handle end...fine tune the lid a bit more...about time for the PIP? Front view...waxed the lip a bit, seemed to help...won't need any finish there, anyway... Brass corners, as this will be stacked on...still thing about a tray A look at the plywood top panel... So....some final sanding, a coat of Gunstock stain, and some varnish...about done.... Stay tuned...
October 3, 20196 yr That looks mighty fine Steven. What is going in this box? The tray sounds interesting, be sure to keep us in the loop if you add that!
